  • There is no talking in the movie?

  • Set in the late 20's, but the shooting is more 40's esque, and technically kodaks vision 3 500t is too fine making it more 50's era aesthetic. This is why Citizen Kane is all time best by story, acting, set, production, and technique.

  • The movie is really good!

  • talking while accenting every other WORD is sometimes but USUALLY very BORING.

  • the fuck is that blackguy talking about?

  • grace , you are pretty and smart, very cool

  • and in case you are wondering I am european, portuguese and I'm an artist. (painter)

  • This is not a problem of where you studied , though I agree it is a major fault. But you also have to be more curious. Specially if you are making reviews. And it seems to me that you and one of your guests that are commenting on this video are missing the point. "making the story more modern" "the story too simple" "titanic"?!? this movie is one of the most avant-guard things (which is kind of ironic) that have shown up in many years. It will make history watch more movies and then review.

  • I'm sorry, but I think it is very unfortunate that someone Who is american and studied film doesn't know basic movie history, and makes film reviews. I am neither american nor have I studied film, nor am I a "film geek", I just enjoy movies, and I knew this and most people I know Know this. Even Chaplin had problems with transitioning to talkies. This is why 2 of his grandaughters are part of the events promoting the movie. this is why R.D.jr who played chaplin presented at the GG . Watch E!

  • @barbcarina1 I know all about silent actors having trouble transitioning to talkies - what I was unaware of was how many foreign accented actors were working in Hollywood's silent movies. Please pay attention to the specifics of the matter at hand before attacking.

    - Grace

  • Who the fuck doesn't like black and white movies?

  • i dont understand how u talk about these important flaws of the movie but still give it a 9... o.O im not saying its bad, i havent seen it yet... im watching it tonight... i am 20 and i have never seen a silent film

  • 2:47

Trolololol guy casually walking by in the background!

  • I love your shirt.

  • michel has novice shoes? huh?

  • .........Long and Hard teehee

  • I knew that spoiler as well

  • I saw this last night, and it was brilliant! Quite possibly one of the best movies I have ever seen *____* 10/10!

  • I frankly don't understand this business of watching old movies, let alone silents, let alone making a new silent movie.

They're just so old; how can they be any good?

  • @SatchmoSings You would be surprised my friend.

  • @linkfan160 I'm not surprised . . . AT YOUR ANSWER!!!

  • @SatchmoSings Okay then. Don't take my word for it, go watch the movie myself.

  • @linkfan160 I'm not watching a film made with a technique that the film industry rightfully put into the dustbin a very long time ago; the film industry stopped making silents because they knew no one was interested in them anymore once sound came in.

  • @SatchmoSings Look, I know it's a bit different for a silent film to be made in the 21st century. I totally see why you'd be reluctant to go see it. But just give it a chance. I mean, my sister went with me and she doesn't really like silent films herself, and she loved it! Really, I can see why this film was nominated for so many oscars.

  • @linkfan160 I'm frankly not interested in your "bandwagon" argument; I'm not going to see something so stupid and idiotic Case-CLOSED.

PS, And if you're so interested in making "bandwagon" arguments, I can also make a rather personal one about you too!!!

  • @SatchmoSings What bandwagon argument? I'm just asking you to give it a chance! Sheesh...fine whatever. I won't force you to go watch it. You can make your own choices, but I wasn't trying to argue with you.

  • @linkfan160 One new film I AM interested in seeing is a film called "Olive;" it was all made with the motion picture function on a Nokia Cell-phone; it looks really good; it has SOUND and it's also in COLOR.

  • @SatchmoSings Never heard of it. Look, just because a film has sound and colour doesn't mean it's good. You shouldn't judge a movie just by the way it looks.

  • @linkfan160 Here is the first five minutes of "Olive."

    watch?v=VV97uzlUQjA

  • @SatchmoSings HA! THE ARTIST WON 5 OSCARS INCLUDING BEST PICTURE! IN YOUR F*CKING FACE! I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU IT WAS AWESOME!

  • @linkfan160 I remember when Sofia Coppola's "Lost In Translation" was released; it was a shit movie but everyone was afraid to say so because of what Sofia Coppola's dad would do if anyone said how shitty this film really was.

"Lost In Translation" reminded me of going to my boss's house and oohing & aahing over a finger painting his daughter had done that was tacked up on the 'fridge

Meanwhile everyone knew that the boss's daughter was a grown woman who DIDNT live in a group home!

  • @SatchmoSings Just because you don't like silent and black&white movies doesn't mean everyone must share your opinion. I've seen all the movies that were selected, and The Artist was clearly the best out of the bunch.

  • Just saw the film! AMAZING! The beauty lies in being able to fill in our own individual interpretations. There is way more depth to this movie in the sense that each individual person who watches can fill in their own dialogue for the unspoken parts or parts not catalogued in the film. Yes, the movie is somewhat predictable with its historical stand point, however, not reading any reviews and being very skeptical that the movie could be enjoyable, it is one of the BEST IN YEARS!

  • Why can't this movie be playing in a 500 mile radius around where I live?

  • @colinmcom14 Because most people in your community have more sense than you do.

  • He does have one line at the very end. "With Pleasure"

  • May suggest to call him : John Of The Garden.

Isn't it better like this ?? It sounds better, yeah !!!!!

  • i like her shirt

  • loved your review but i disagry with how only silent film lovers can like this movie for the fact that this was the first silent film i really saw and loved it and enjoyd it more when i saw it the second time with my sister and she also loved it and she almost hates the films i watch, the Oscars do suck with there nominations thow

  • And fyi Ive never seen a silent film, I just felt like watching it and loved it. I think anyone can watch it and enjoy. The plot didn't need to be complicated, I feel the true beauty of silent films is to allow our senses to focus in on the emotions of the actors and the beauty of the musical score (which was excellent). Why are there so many haters?

  • Amazing Picture!! I loved it x 10

  • I'm not sure, but I think if this movie wins best picture it'll be the first silent film to win an Oscar cause the academy didn't start giving out oscars until 1931 after the silent era had ended

  • Hi Grace, cool site and great review of The Artist! Loved the movie too. Bring on the Oscars:)

  • These people obviously (but understandably) don't know much about silent films, and their comparison to TITANIC is appalling. But hey, at least they gave it an overall 8! I hope THE ARTIST wins every last one of the Oscars for which it's been nominated.

  • "The Artist takes advantage of this history and Jean Dujardin's character has a thick french accent, which is why he is so opposed to doing talkies."

How ridiculous it is to believe that he decided to make a silent movie because of his accent in english ! He has strong facial and body expressions, that's the reason he was chosen.

  • her voice is sooo annoying

  • looks shit

  • lol

  • I personally loved it and i rank in my top ten list of 2011

  • the film was okay but.....the actors really carry this movie (obviuosly) The movie itself, is as straight forward as they come!! if tarrantino had directed this movie, it would be a wrote off as a total rip off of a genre that has been done!! but a french director copies every silent film from the 20's and is regaurded as a pioneer!! nothing about this film is original!! arthouse snobbery!! drive was the best movie of the year..and i'll bet it does'nt get a nomination

  • This is a great movie, the lead was fantastic playing a fictionalized Douglas Fairbanks. And wow, he's a hell of an actor! Hope he learns English, he'll give everybody a run for their money.

  • I loved this movie!!!!!

  • I can't stand these BTT crew reviews. Do you guys like ANYTHING?

  • My generation is fucking retarded. People diss on this movie, but this film is a piece of art. I was born in the wrong generation.

  • @EthanShreve18

Its the generation of the yelp, people feel they have to critique stuff down to the freaking bone. They forgot that you can just enjoy something and not always have to break it down so much.

  • One video reviewer said; "By necessity the story has to be simple because there's no dialogue... otherwise the audience wouldn't be able to follow it."

No. Silent movies can be complex. Watch Metropolis or Napoleon. Both silent and complex. From what I've seen of "The Artist", it is an homage to old romance films which can also have sound like the Fred Astaire musicals. This is light weight entertainment, which a person may like. Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie" in 1976 is similar but more modern.

  • I really enjoyed watching the BTT crew reviewing the film! We dont usually get to see behind the scenes. Mainly, I liked to see Grace's opinion on things.

  • 2:46 nice mask

  • The silent film are the best UNIVERSAL movies because no need to understand a foreigner language to watch it

  • A silent film is like a book, you as the reader/audience member have to bring something to the table. A book gives you the words and you provide the images. A silent film has the images and you provide (between title cards) the words. They mean for you to put some of yourself into the story, and so it will be a little different for everyone. If you find the story too simple, perhaps you are too accustomed to movies that don't make you think. There are certainly enough of those around.

  • @poshpennyTube This comment confuses me. If we say a movie is too simple, you chastise us by (assuming) we watch movies that don't make us think aka simple movies?

  • @quirkfree Not at all. A simply told story can make you think, as can a complex movie. What I mean are movies that spell every little thing out for you so much that all you do is watch.

  • I didn't think it was too simple. The people being interviewed here seem kind of simple. It's just not one of those sophisticated trains and planes exploding, wild sex scenes, ugly aliens, and people beating the crap out of each other kind of movie.

  • i would also give it a 9. i loved the simplicity of it

  • Really want to see this film, I love old vintage movies. Also lol at the guy wearing a mask on his head at 2:46!

  • I have seen some Chaplain films and Buster Keaton films. I also have Nosferatu, and Phantom of the Opera on the same DVD. Both are classic silent films.

  • This movie is in theaters too far away from me so I will have to wait until the cheap theater gets it.

  • which theatre did you go to??

  • Thank you for whay you do! :)

  • @MrSmithDynamite It's my pleasure! And thank you not just for watching, but for the encouraging comment! :)

    - Grace

  • @BeyondTheTrailer Thanks for the reply! I just love cinema and watched the Artist in a 1920's built theatre which is a town's treasure (it's renovated of course).

  • I would not be surprised if it wins best picture

  • if you don't like the story and want to try a silent film before you die or try something different for once then please people try it out

  • Comment removed

  • Wait at 7.00 you went to NYU film school and you didn't know about what transpired during the silent to sound transition???? What NYU film school doesn't have a film history requirement?

  • @lukebccb :) I am as surprised as you are that NYU Film did not discuss the foreign movie stars in Hollywood that were destroyed by the transition to sound. Then again, it's hardly the first time history has been "white washed", right?

    - Grace

  • @MrJaffa2015: but you're still stuck looking at the awful fucking crap production values of the crap twilight "movies". Where the fuck did the 100 million dollars go? Sure the fuck not the CGI or the sets. They must've spent that money on the fucking wedding dress.

  • One of the information she gives about the silent film is incorrect. I'd point it out but it would be a spoiler.

  • Comment removed

  • 2:46 what in the world is on that man's head.

  • I hate black and white silent films.

  • Thanks for the review and thanks for hiding the spoiler.

  • gay who want to c diz,

  • The intern need to go.

  • Its very interesting... but does it have what it takes to win the oscar's?

  • Hey grace since you review movies like these that are in limited release are you planning on reviewing indie game the movie?

  • This film was outstanding!!

  • Who's lucky luke?

  • 2:52 your famous!!!

  • I want to see this movie so hard!!

  • Is there any reason it couldn't have been a sound movie with maybe English subtitles? Just wondering.

  • @misa18amaneyt

I think it is the general perception that the "casual" movie goer in the U.S.A. doesn't care to or finds it utterly annoying to read subtitles for an entire film. They would rather wait for it to be dubbed over in English. I personally don't concur with this sentiment, but I know many who do.

  • @misa18amaneyt The director specifically wanted to make a silent film, so he wrote one.

  • Comment removed

  • I think The Artist is the Ballsiest film to come out in a while, I really want to see it.

  • @Efstarforce330 lol great way to describe it! I'm excited for this release too!

  • @Efstarforce330

I dit, it is fan-tas-tic. A must see!! You'll leave the cinema with a big smile on your face.

  • My cousin worked on the Titanic film.

  • Was that theater showing the room?

  • Can you tell Carly she's really cute.

  • That is so cool!

  • Oh, I already knew this from Singing in the Rain and those TMC reviews/commentaries on the old black and white films. =)

  • I wish this was playing in Florida

  • @mollypie10 it's a really great movie a unic experience for our generation (and yes i know IT'S FRENCH !!!) but i guess is the most American/french movie I never seen !

When everything is in 3D (should I say the "Ugly 3D") it's good to see a movie like this ^^

Jean Dujardin is a new Gene Kelly for the charisma and Berenice Bejo is beautiful!

so i wish you can see in florida :D !

  • @loguld That's good to know. I love the old black and white silent films and when I saw the trailer I couldn't wait to see it,,actually did some research and it WILL be playing here Christmas Day, yes can't wait to see it ^_^

  • Everybody in this video speaks like this? It kinda becomes a little bit ridiculous? They are not even asking any questions?

  • Awesome shirt! That's pretty hilarious! Shrodinger's cat, wanted dead or alive!

  • The black dude seems to know nothing about movies except what's on the surface. He annoys me in all the crew reviews because he represents to me the rest of the movie going public that need everything spelled out & simplified. Movies are more than color and sound. I cringed when he said the movie could have had color & sound and would have gotten the point across better because there is a reason that the movie is silent and in black & white. It just goes to show he doesn't know what true art is.

  • @replicant1027 I would like to point out that my problem with this movie was that it was all surface. I know very well about the history of cinema and silent film and while I admired the movie as a black and white film, it did nothing but merely repeat tried and true formulas and cliches. It did nothing different, and like another commenter stated "I'm still not sold on why this film is any more remarkable than the actual old silent films I can watch on TCM most days of the week."

  • @quirkfree - The point of this film is that it is an "homage" to old silent films, and full of references. Hence the "tried and true formulas anc clichés", which by the way have been given a bit of a makeover. As for your last statement - it's pretty irritating. Rather shockingly, you are equating all silent films with each other. With your logic we wouldn't need any new films at all, as we already have plenty in all genres.

  • @slightlygrouchy Makeovers or not, I don't think it stands on its own. I'm not equating all silent films with each other; there are certain stylistic choices that I admired which are not find in other silent movies but that doesn't make the entire movie worthy of my unabashed adoration. I gave it a 6/10 so obviously I liked some aspects of it, but for me, those were not enough to differentiate 100 minutes of a tried and true story.

  • It saddens me that todays society don't like silent movies. Apparently nobody seems to understand the art of what a silent film really is. To everybody that doesn't appreciate the silent films let me tell you something. If it wasn't for silent movies we wouldn't be getting sound and color that we have today. It takes real actors to act out in a silent picture and it takes solid good music for it to tell the story.

  • Grace, why, all of a sudden, do you have to do the show outside?

  • Another great review :D

  • There's a great episode of the Powerpuff girls about the whole silent film to talkie transition... Done in the Saturday morning cartoon way but still awesome!! I can't wait to watch the artist... Visually it looks stunning!

  • Grace, if you like the work of Hazanavicius you should see "La classe americaine" a special made for TV movie for the 100th anniversary of cinema. It was a recut of many Warner bros. movies and redubbed to make a whole new story (think Citizen Kane parody). Of course it's not available for an obvious question of copyrights. But you can find it "out there", i don't know if there is english subtitles...

  • a boring movie no one will watch winning at the oscars - that doesnt happen... at all..........

  • There have been great stories in silent films, although rare, and they could have had a better story. I love 'The Cameraman' a Buster Keaton film. That man is a cinematic genius.

  • This movie sounds like Oscar bait, by which I mean it is a film so esoteric that only very sophisticated minded critics, like Roger Ebert, will truly be entertained by it, while regular audience members will be befuddled by it. It will be sort of like a black and white silent version of Tree of Life.

  • @alphacause ... no it wont.

  • I like your viewpoints, but you guys are so much more critical than the general public, I don't get excited to see the movie

  • I like how you are doing reviews on less mainstream films. Shame 'The Skin I Live in' hasn't been getting much award praise.

  • The story obviously needs to be simple! People are to stupid to know what it's avout.

  • @Airbender2121 Uh huh, did you spell 'about' wrong and 'to' in the wrong context for irony's sake?

  • hehe funny how you pronounce gerard depardieu.

    you americans ;-)

    good review though!

  • how is NYU film as a school?

  • Grace, whats your top 5 films of the year? PLZZzZzzZZ reply :)

  • Great review! I agree with the comments that the story was too simple. Except from that, I found the exercise well done and entertaining enough. I dont think the film has the depth to win best film though, but I'd love to see Dujardin nominated for his acting. If I had to play my French pride card, I would push for "Polisse" (Poliss) in the best foreign film category. It also earned some recognition in Cannes. It deals with a tough subject but it's so well treated and acted! You should see it :)

  • "i thought about it long and hard and the best comparison i can make is to.."

    "singing in the rain?"

    "titanic"

    ????????

  • I think grace has a crush on Jean Dujardin :P

  • Before you even started talking I was won over by the trailer. Do want!

  • the story has to be simple because most of the people in this world are stupid...

  • Grace's shirt= complete epic win

  • Heh, The Room is playing at the theater behind them. The best worst movie ever.

  • I'm still not sold on why this film is any more remarkable than the actual old silent films I can watch on TCM most days of the week.

  • OK this is definitly a movie I want to see. I love retro style films.

  • This film was amazing, without a doubt the best film Harvey Weinstein has produced in years, Jean Dujardin will without a doubt get the best actor nomination, execllent review grace!

  • Grace, not only are you very knowledgeable as a film-lover, but you have a crew of great minds!

  • I love you guys! =) Great review by all of you that shows how much thought and fair, honest discernment you put into reviewing/thinking about a film that clearly deserves it. =) I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing this film as I'm a very big film aficionado... and coincidentally, a dog lover! =) Thanks for the nice & thoughtful review Grace & crew!

  • When does this get a wide release?

  • that wasnt much of a spoiler

  • you thought it was long and hard you must have been thinking about me

  • I'm not sure this movie has picked my interest enough to actually keep me entertained. But who knows. The hard part is to find someone charming who isn't talking. But then again, I was watching The Illusionist the other day, a French animated film and alot of it was very charming without dialogue for a long portion of it. I guess we'll see. DVD or streaming, but not a movie ticket.

  • grace, I am 16 so this review made me interested in the movie as an attemp to see what it was like to go to movies in the past. But I didn't like the fact that you didn't mention a word about the actual plot of the film.

  • RWJ is down!

  • Learning English at 40 will be tough.

  • This movie might be interesting for some, but it's not even gonna break the forty million mark in the U.S. market.

I haven't seen this movie, but it looks like they borrowed heavily from the old "Blondie and Dagwood" movie serial. The overbearing boss (Mr. Dithers) and the partner in crime side kick dog (Daisy). The only thing missing is baby dumpling.

  • What's the spoiler?

  • @jcsreader For example if i tell u who the killer is in a mystery movie before u get to see it then that`s a spoiler.

  • How very French of him? Hey, that's not true, some of us love English and we put a lot a lot of efforts into trying to speak English correctly!

  • Grace is so versatile, she was discussing Chipwrecked in one video then jump to artsy stuff like Shame and the Artist. I feel Hugo did a better job of showing the power of Silent film.

  • I haven't seen this yet, but I'm really excited to see it. I adore silent films and to see one made these days makes me really happy. It's a bold move to do this style now-a-days and I think it's fantastic.

  • Funny how this is in some ways the opposite of "Hugo," yet both are considered for Best Picture nominations.

  • I don't get the spoiler...

  • I'm sorry, I just can't watch this. I love Grace and her quick wit but my god do I hate French people.

  • @DannyBoy443 why?

  • @spookyarda Seriously? They hate everyone else for one. I've never heard of a good story from a non French person visiting coming back with an interesting tale from the social p.o.v. Secondly, it's played out. I'm an artist, and it's soo cliche and played out to enjoy French art. It's just pretentious. Even the "rappers" from there sound like assholes. Third, why not? It's a boring country with only food being a good attraction. If you like that sort of thing. Anything else?

  • @DannyBoy443 Funny how you're American yet you hate the French, ahem The Statue of Liberty.

  • @Nintendoman15 Ahem, I'm not from NY and I could care less about that area and the east coast. So go fuck yourself and come back with something worth reading. Asshole.

  • Hey sorry Grace, great review and between this and Hugo I'm going to enjoy cinema again.
