Dang I wasn't even alive, much less old enough to know what they're saying, during this time but I sure wish I was cuz this is way better than the hip hop of today!!
Hard to believe that this was one of producer Dallas Austin's first hits long before Boyz II Men, TLC,Madonna and countless other artists. Smart R&B/rap collaboration long before Beyonce and Jay-Z! And Joyce made a good album--don't understand why it wasn't promoted enough in 1989.
I'm sorry, but I hated the song then and time hasn't made it better. Joyce Fenderella Irby got credit for the song, but in reality it was a Doug E. Fresh song with her vocals as the guest appearance. It was obviously a marketing move to get people to have interest in her solo career, which promptly went in the toilet after this song cooled off. Even then, I always thought this was such a generic-sounding tune.
This song hit # 4 on the R&B charts in the summer of 89 and Doug was a great choice to perform with. They both need to be honored with Lifetime Acheivement Awards
This was the beginning of the music movement in Atlanta, GA, even thought this was filmed in LA. Joyce Irby has discovered some of the hottest talent in Atlanta. Look closely at the people in this video. SuperProducer "Dallas Austin", Super Songwriter-Bassist-Session Singer-Producer "Debra Killings", Programmer for the stars Beyonce/Ciara/Monica/Amerie/Kelly Rowland/Nelly/Chris Brown/Mario/Destiny's Child/Jamie Foxx/Dionne Farris-Producer-Songwriter "William Burke" Also "Jack The Rapper" himself
I still like that song. One of the best R&B/hip-hop collaborations of the late '80s long before Diddy, Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri and others made it common in the '90s and now.
Woooow! I never thought I would hear this song ever again until I got to my 12' in the shed in Japan! I've never seen the video either, and brings back lots of lots of memories! Thanks for posting this vid!
