*spoiler* Ofelia's schizophrenic. She was traumatized by her father's death and subconsciously created a fantasy in which he was still alive (the King) and that she was a princess. At the end, her schizophrenia told her to sacrifice her brother, but her conscious won't allow her to, so when she gets shot (and realizes she's going to die) her mind reconstructs the fantasy accordingly, creating a scenario (spilling of her blood being the "actual" last task) that sustains the fantasy till the end.

Also remember that in the "princess' " realm there was "no lies or pain" (Ofelia's attempt at creating a place of peace in her mind).

When I try to explain the story to my friends it sounds stupid and weard X) but this is one of the most beautiful movies ever. ^^<3 Rent it or buy it. I could only watch halfway through this awful trailer. No justice was made for PL here.

The original language is Spanish so they thought 'US audiences are uncultured and don't read; let's just use a narrator', who turns out beyond unnecessary and annoying. Music choice is void of any feeling; why would anyone feel like they need replacing the haunting lullaby with anything else? And thank you for spoiling the ending scenes.

And now I'm reading other comments, and everyone seems to agree.
