I am still wondering why people are questioning this? The race was NOT completed! Every team in this relay must hit the wall before the race is done. A DQ was completely within the rules and should have happened (as it did) Even High School swimmers know this rule and don't do it... swimmers at the World level should know better
The female commentator saying this should be excused because the aussie boys did it in 1998, but the aussie boys weren't stupid enough to do it whilst the race was still in progress.
Something that I do find funny about this is when after the girls find out they've been DQ'd, that the Australian interviewer says 'And Austrailia's Been Disqualified', saying it like it's not that important. lol
I think to call it ignorance is ignorance in itself. It looks like in the replay that before Petria jumped in she looked across to the Lane 1 to see a swimmer finishing and she jumped in straight after. She must have thought that was the last swimmer because she didn't look on her other side.
Agree they should be disqualified but what is the logical extension? If you are in a marathon, does the winner wait for the last competitor an hour later?
Rules are rules! They should know better and it was just plain rude to jump in while other countries were finishing the race! If the Americans had dones that, oh my god, ALL HELL would have broke loose and people would bitch and complain about 'arrogant Americans'. During Beijing, people complained when the Americans (after Lezak won by a fingernail) celebrated on deck. Strange how people pity the Aussies here but would crucify the Americans for celebrating! Hmmm... double standard?
diving in too early before the other swimmer touches the pad during an exchange, it;s common, sometimes one will take an extra stroke or glide too long and the other swimmer will miscalculated the timing.
This video is hilarious, so funny. It may seem a little harsh that they got disqualified but rules are rules and often the difference between a good athlete and a great athlete is knowledge of the rules (maybe not so much in swimming but especially in sports like soccer and rugby) ignorance should be no excuse if you are a professional athlete. Aside from that it's poor sportsmanship to go doing something like that while others are still finishing the race.
@harrow555555 Absolutely right - and you'd be surprised about the multitude of little rules associated with swimming. Conforming to all of them, especially the ones that are applicable to when you're actually swimming, is very difficult.
Why was the US disqualified?

I would like to retract my previous comment & summarize it this way: both commentators are beyond atrocious.

I've watched this again & I would my comments about the male commentator to his female counterpart. She's just as bad as him.

@healyc I would call him either a fucking twat or simply an absolute prick. Inconsiderate cocksucker would be another one.

Wow! What bad sportsmanship the Aussies showed when they won. What they should have done is wait until the race is over then celebrate.

craigthomasjohnson 2 years ago
It's a relay. One American swimmer jumped in before the previous one finished.

so the swimmer didnt touch the wall then , i see
craigthomasjohnson 2 years ago
she touched the wall, but after her team mate had already gone

When you have four great swimmers,
like the Australians and U.S. did, it
had to be heartbreaking. I know that
there are rules about jumping in the
water before the race is over, but that
went on the verge of being to strict.
The Americans being DQed at that time
is still strange and unusual.

I'm new to swimming. Why was the US disqualified? What is, "for breaking?" Did they false start or something?
cs24chris 2 years ago
@cs24chris
Its because a swimmer jumped into the pool before the previous one had hit the end of the pool. Its pretty much a fasle start
