Loved it. That is such amazing footage. Seeing the Earth from onboard a rocket is the best thing in the world. What a great looking planet we have from afar... Of course, when you get close to it... Not so hot...
lol If you guys want to go to the moon, find another Kennedy and start a brand new cold war (possibly with china). A moon landing will then be an epic propaganda win.
@Drfusebox All it takes is one president with big goals and the means to do it. Someday I hope to go to Mars as an astronaut with Space X, but that cannot be done until someone has the motivation.
@AccessDenied55 It's a pitch maneuver. Since you have to be traveling a certain direction to orbit, the rocket begins to pitch early so that your Apogee will grow slowly while your trajectory will widen. This way, when you burn again, your Perigee levels out before your Apogee grows, leading to a stable and circular orbit.
That pitch is executed after a roll program on Manned flights. The Roll program allows the controls to be correct for the direction you want to go.
Constellation will end up like Shuttle, a welfare program for government jobs. This rocket is very problematic and is far less capable than its private counterpart the Falcon9. The 1st mistake it has to have a gigantic escape system to attempt to pull away from an SRB failure. Thus, it needs a heavy lift system. Thus, the cost goes up. The same people who make Ares one promised Shuttle would cost less than 10 million a flight. Actual cost 1.6 billion p/flight.
@mainstreetgse No it won't because it was cancelled many months ago. The current Administration has ensured that we nolonger have a viable space program.
@mainstreetgse Oh, and by the way, NO it does not require a HUGE escape system. The Ares / Constellation fell back on many of the Apollo concepts including the very simple escape rocket system. It had a simple rocket attached to a shroud the covers the crew module during lift off. Up to a certain altitude, the rocket could be fired and it would pull the crew module away from the rocket. If it ended up not being used, it simply pulls the shroud off at a designated altitude.
it is so funny and sad to see people argue over something that does in no way contain as yet 15 megatons of deliverables . You argue your intellect as it was the length of your manhood. We shall all be at the foot of the Lord on the last day.
I was a scientist, mathematician, physics scholar.
Quit trying to show how smart you are to each other and just LOVE your wife and children.
bishop51807 Are you a NASA! scientist? NO! then shut UP! U fail! the X43s can operate in space with stored oxygen that is accumulated in flight before space opperations so SUT! UP! dumb ass!
@1x8twist Are you a NASA scientist? No? then shut up! how the hell can you make something new like that when has only been 50 years since the the first man space flight also Scramjet engines are useless in space were there is no AIR!!.
Umm, obama never kiled the ares program. It is still alive. And all those who want to cancel it can go move to canada, where there also happens to be gov-funded healthcarefor all you morons.
@eastsidelife4ever36 What are you talking about exactly? You're the one who can't spell, or apparently read either. Also, the program IS still running.
Testing concepts of new rocket design... only to be killed off by a moron neighborhood organizer intent to turn NASA into an organization that appeases Islam.
Would a vehicle that reproduces what we already have with the Atlas V or Delta IV really be worth $14 billion? We could've manrated either one of THOSE rockets and not have the problems that Ares 1 was giving.
If there was a 1st stage failure, there is NO chance the capsule could survive. Even with the best crew escape system money can buy, you could not get far enough away from the explosion. When solid fuel explodes, molten chucks of burning solid debris sprays out for miles. Any parachute system would be eaten alive. Just look at the Delta II explosion.
@ti994apc you'd have to remember that the Nose escape system would also be attached to capsule, thus capable of propelling the craft out of the debris zone not to mention the projected velocity (from the SRB) still propelling the capsule after seperation... also there's the heat shield........
actually it was expected that the top part would start to spin. This was because of the wight balance. It is not an error. Do some research before you comment.
@FoulOwl I never claimed to be a professor (that'll be the day ;) ) but as i understand it to achieve anywhere near escape velocity you're already going many times faster than the speed of sound, and breaking the sound barrier means a build up of pressurized air around the craft, which leads to the hydrogen and oxygen condensing into water (Prandtl-Glauert singularity). This then freezes to form the ice you often see. But feel free to prove me wrong, i'm always open to learning new things :)
@SepradistPhantom I've got better things to do than school you kids.Bersides,I've used heat-guns on enough painted surfaces to remove paint to know it when I see it.
Interesting to see that this may be the future of space travel.
I relate it to washing dishes. It's easier to buy a cheap plate that you can easily dispose of after use, instead of a "real" plate that you have to clean and take care of.
I think it's because the whole thing is going forward, and when they disconnected the "front" was slowing down while the "back" was accelerating so it creates a zone of conflicting forces and you get the "tumble". I'm probably wrong.
I believe it was intentional for recovery purposes. The launch was not to get into orbit. When I watched this live I thought it was a failure as well but apparently all went as planned.
