I am not sure about the legality of doing this... even though it was kinda cool to watch... I think sending a unmanned and uncontrolled object into the air that is not FAA Regulated (if that is the case here) is not a very bright thing to do. It could cause alot of problems if it came into contact with an airplane for one... or what if it fell back to earth uncontrolled too because the parachute failed... and hit and killed somebody. This is not a very smart thing to do! .
@SandpiperN121PP It is legal. Not FAA regulated. andif you knew anything about physics you'd know that objects have maximum speeds because of mass, friction, resistance and gravitation and therefor could not hurt anybody because it is too slow. The airplane point: What about the millions of people that let their normal helium balloons go every day. Ever heard of any plane crsh because some kid couldn't hold on to it's balloon? No? Me neither. GUess that answeres the question.
@PMCbecker Wow... I cannot believe the response here... I am at a loss but will say this... it is pointless to even argue with someone as radical as you appear from your response. Oh... and for the record... I didn't vote for Obama... and yes... I do know about physics... but like I said... to argue with you is a no win situation... because you refuse to be open minded! Have a wonderful day sir and God Bless! :)
PART 101—MOORED BALLOONS, KITES, AMATEUR ROCKETS AND UNMANNED FREE BALLOONS
Subpart D—Unmanned Free Balloons
im very intrested in doing what you are but from my research it looks like you and many other people are just filling a balloon up with helium and attaching a cellphone and letting it go.
i see you are watching where you launched but do you see in the link about "markings" and "deflation" devices etc....is this legal or not... need help
If you want FREE gift cards dowload the app called Apptrailers and use the bones code Blessingmuffin for some extra ppints that you can use to redeem for gift cards to itunes bestbuy amazon xbox psn and many more!!!!!
@skaught911 well i think thats the idea it goes really far into the sky and when the surroundings drop to a pressure so low that its a vacuum the ballon explodes dropping the camera with a safety chute
@triggerdance They are using Helium in this video which is an inert gas that will not combust regardless of heat. What I want to know is whether or not it's safe to use Hydrogen which is extremely volatile in certain circumstances. All I need to know it what kind of temperatures can be experienced at 120,000 + feet. And the balloon is not a vacuum it's the opposite because it's containing gas under pressure. Thanks for trying :)
@skaught911 Oh and sorry re-read your post and realized that you didn't say the balloon was a vacuum but due to the low pressure at altitude the surrounding area would be near a perfect vacuum.
@skaught911 No, there is not enough oxygen for the hydrogen to react with. Explosions are nothing but very fast oxydation. hence no oxygen - no explosion
@PMCbecker There is still oxygen at extremely high altitudes it's just not a huge amount, I'm more or less curious of what percentage of oxygen there is at a very high altitude. If there was no oxygen than planes like the U2 would not be able to operate past 100,000 ft.
I have a couple of questions, Did you break any like, federal air space laws? and how was the parachute deployed? I'm near DIA where that 'Balloon Boy' hoax originated and don't want a visit from the authorities. I'd love to try this on a super calm clear night with a bunch of 'glow stix' in the balloon for the ufo effect? what all did you put together here? If you could mass produce something like this they would fly off the shelf my man... very cool...
@Stevefhu....i think we all know that was 19miles into the edge of space... Why cant people just appreciate the effort rather than sniff out errors and criticism....Well done to them anyway at least u guys actually did something.
The title should say "Balloon with camera goes to near space. amazing." Space starts at 328,000ft, roughly three times the height the balloon reached. The balloon actually reached near space which starts at 65,000ft. It is impossible for a balloon to actually reach space, the highest recorded altitude for an unmanned balloon was 173,900ft in 2002, not even two thirds the distance.
@bluelarz you're fuckin stupid the point was to get up to space which they basically did and it wouldn't matter if it wasn't cloudy the camera was pointing straight out, not downward
for such a simple cost effective idea with pretty good if not better video that we see on the news from what nasa does i wonder why it cost so much for nasa to go outer space and why do they make it seem like such a hard thing to do when i guy with a weather ballon an i pod and a camera can do it in less than an hour
@Therealityoflife with all the technology nasa has we i dont even think we have ever seen a live video in outer space just still photos it would be so cool if the nasa organization was more people friendly even though all of the money they spend come from our tax dollars and let us see what they are seeing
This guy has to be the most awesome dad a kid could have, making a dream come true like that! Congratulations, guys! This has to be one of the coolest videos ever posted on Youtube.

by not following the faa rules and launching unmanned balloons would this be a felony?
when you record yourself doing this and then post that recording to youtube i believe it can be admissible in a court of law.
really wish someone who knows the rules to this would chime in
