Hi, I was wondering if there is any precautions to choosing wood for whittling to make pipes, spoons, etc. I know that some woods are considered toxic but I'm not sure if this means I need to learn to identify all different types of trees for safety reasons before I start learning bushcraft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

@HandsomeSasquatch Just find a nice, thick stick, cut it down a bit and sand, drill out somehow, not many poison woods out there i know of, or at least not it my area.

@HandsomeSasquatch Best bet is to do the same thing as you do with edible plants; don't waste time learning the toxic ones, but learn the safe ones.

Nice man. If you make another though, try and identify the wood first. Not sure about you, but where I live there are wild Rhododendrons everywhere and people try and use the branches for pipes or firewood and the fumes are toxic when inhaled. Awesome pipe style though!!
