I think Denzel is doing his best in a role which he isn't quite right for. I don't think he has the toughness or the depth for Troy, which is probably why he chose a comical angle rather than a serious one. When reading the play, I instantly thought of James Earl Jones as being much closer to Augusts description of Troy - physically big and strong yet with a past of struggle and warmth behind that - qualities i attribute to Earl Jones, and he was utterly convincing, serious and moving as Troy.
i don't know how they managed to wring every ounce of nuance and meaning out of this...what the hell? when has a person ever walked into a room and stood stark still during an argument with another person? i mean, god! the actress didn't even take her hand out of her pocket. would she at least wrung her hands with worry, or held them up in supplication to her bombastic husband? not here. she stood there with one hand in her pocket like she was waiting for a bus. smdh...
...or maybe it was a choice made by a thoughtful actress who understands her character's relationship to her "bombastic" husband, whom she loves, and has learned to deal with his outbursts with patience. It gives Rose a strong, quiet dignity. Clearly you don't understand that.
When YOU graduate from the Juilliard School of Drama and establish an award-winning acting career that spans Broadway and Hollywood, maybe THEN you can talk.
I understand the POSSIBILITY of creating CONTRAST with these characters and story.
I said it DIDN'T WORK. Dignity does not mean Frozen!
And no, you don't get a pass for doing something for a long time. Nobody's perfect and every choice does not work. I don't need Juliard to tell me how drama affects me. I just need to watch it. And you SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GO LEARN YOUR LINES: "GIVE me your wallet. Give ME you wallet." Sorry-ass actor...
If you look into Davis' eyes, it's quite clear that she is far from frozen. She is keyed into her husband's energy, and is not backing down.
lol @ go learn my lines. In fact, you're right, I should--I've been doing job after job at top theaters all year, and I'm about to start another gig in a few days. So I'll go do what I went to school for while you troll on Youtube.
@dusttracks did you read the play to understand the rose character? or are you just judging by this clip? She play the character her own way and it worked.
@obiwashere don't get me wrong. i absolutely love viola davis and have immense respect for her work. denzel, too, of course. he is an icon and deservedly so. i read the play and liked it. i'm just saying that from what i saw here, it doesn't get me.
@dusttracks EXCUSE me. Have you seen, "The Help"? Have you seen "Doubt"? There is a reason Viola Davis has already received an Oscar Nomination for "Doubt" and might receive another for "The Help". In "Doubt" she was in there for maybe five minutes, but that's all it took for people to see how incredible her talent is. People were saying she stole that scene from Meryl Streep. How many critics have said that about any performer standing next to Meryl Streep?
@Empathywriter Yes, I've see 'Doubt' and am a HUGE fan of Viola Davis. Her performance in 'Doubt' was iconic and masterful. But...that doesn't mean I like everything she does. People can make lots of choices when DIRECTING and my suggestion was pulled out of the air. I don't care how many awards people win, everything they do is not great! Get off it...Why do people start listing an actor's accomplishments when someone says something that isn't absolute praise or adoration?
@dusttracks Ha ha. I just realized how so dramatic I sounded. I apologize. Here's the thing: for me I do care tremendously about a person's performance because it is what I'm deeply passionate about. to me acting is almost everything. A performance can make or break a movie or tv show for me, and that's why i care about who wins awards. You know? Like some people are insanely passionate about music, writers, etc. Me: acting.
@dusttracks i completely agree with you i think she is very mellow dramatic...she has to be alot bigger on stage and i tink she should raise the stakes and give a little more...i see denzel giving a little too much and playing out to the audience instead of what he is being fed from viola
@ByronJamesShow Thank you! This is exactly what I meant. People get all sentimental and emotionally attached to a production like this. There's no need for it. Everything is subject to review and comment. Even the work of our beloved actors and writers.
@Empathywriter Why do people start listing an actor's accomplishments when someone says something that isn't absolute praise or adoration? As if I don't know what both of these people have done. Darling, it's not that serious. Don't take these comments to heart. These people don't need you or obiwashere or blacktor or anyone else to protect them from less than stellar comments on youtube. They'll be fine. Trust me. (idiots)
@dusttracks I listed her credentials because I feel she truly deserves the recognition. Yeah, I do apologize cause it seems everybody is beating down on you. I'm not sure for everybody else, but like I said for me it is personal on a certain level because that's what I do: I analyze people's performances: each gesture, facial expression, the way they read a line, or say nothing at all. If you could please explain, maybe in more detail, why you don't like her performance? I really am curious.
@dusttracks Second, the wringing of hands and all that other stuff you were mentioning about how she should have played the character that she won a Tony for, I must say is so melodramatic. In fact her standing there listening to him with her one hand in the pocket and looking down is far harder to do emotionally and mentally then it is to wring one's hands in nervous anticipation. And yes, people do stand still during an argument. I do when I think they person's argument is illogical. Thank you
@obiwashere Denzel studied Journalism in college while doing some a play on accident. From then on he fell in love with acting and the rest is history =)
@born2fight99 His understudy not what he studied in college. In theatre, an understudy is an actor who learns the lines and blocking of the main actor just incase the main actor is unable to perform. Pretty much if Denzel gets sick, his understudy would do the show in his place.
@rlpniew lmao tyler perry, i believe, is a great playwright. idk what you watch but why are you're mad because people are laughing... seriously? Why can't people laugh? Do they need your permission? I mean be an asshole.. i guess (:
My mother, brother and I flew from Mississippi to see the play last night! We paid almost 500 a ticket, but it was absolutely worth it! Everyone acted phenomenally! The guy who played the schizophrenic uncle is my brother's acting coach!

Viola Davis is an EXCELLENT actress, if she seems that way that's because that's how the character is feeling, believe me, lol.
But yeah, Denzel is amazing in everything he does, he put so much energy into each word and facial expression and hand movement and..EVERYTHING!
I wish I didn't miss this, I want to watch it on DVD or something so bad.
