  • yelling "STUPID HORSE!" isnt gonna help u.

  • @squemish51 thx and that makes it sadder

  • NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! ARRRTAAAAAXXXX!!!!!!!!!!! :'(

  • I cried.

  • Plz answer: why did artex just stand there???? plz answer

  • @KestrelStar He had too much sadness and gave up on himself.

  • I hate this film only because that scene!!

  • In the real life the horse died in the film.

  • C'mon Artax, quit horsing around.

  • @godboy114 lmfao :)

  • great, after years of therapy, I've stumbled upon this scene again. I cant stop myself from crying now... I need a childlike Empress to balance me out.

  • fuck this kids a great actor seriously....

  • still makes me cry

  • 3 PEOPLE DIED IN THE SWAMP OF SORROWS!

  • This is good to watch when you have alot of stress built up and need to cry.

  • @Sobersean80 That's exactly what I just used it for.

  • I wonder what's the title of the track when Atreyu walks through the swamps...

  • I first saw this scene probably twenty years ago now... and to this very day it still gives me goosebumps to watch it through. This either makes it a great film, or a film that's slightly traumatized me.

  • If you give up hope, you lose everything you love. But can you find something to hope for, you will survive. Children need to hear it said many times.

  • @mollean errr... that isn't actually true. It's true in Hollywood films, but that is all.

  • By the way what would The desert of Shattered Hopes do to you????

  • @Theshark15z quicksand...because hoping is overrated lol :P

  • @mugencivic88 So in the dessert you would sink like the swamp???

  • I always wondered why Gmork never died in the Swamps of Sadness, is it because he knows he is a spawn of evil???

  • He never let the sadness of the swamp overtake him. That's how he was able to pass through the swamp and tried to get to Atreyu.

  • Even today at 20 years old, this scene makes me cry.

  • the only 2 times i cried as a kid, and now as and adult because of a film, this, and when i was very young, bambi`s mum getting shot

  • the only 2 times i cried as a kid, and now as and adult because of a film, this, and when i was very young, bambi1s mum getting shot

  • I can't believe Artax dies just so that they can see a disgusting old turtle that doesn't even help.

  • glad I never watched or ever heard of this as a lil kid.I would of cried my eyes out after seeing this scene & wouldnt want to ever watch this movie again... even @ 19 this kinda made me sad seeing the horse die

  • whats that muddy stuff?

  • @raptor6987 Mud...:P It might be quicksand.

  • Title song at 3:00 minute please?

  • Awful scene, but I've checked this out and not only did the horse survive it was offered to the boy who played Atreyu after filming. Where the myth abou the horse really dying is anyone's guess but my guess is another movie company who just coulnd't believe another country was capable of creating the most fabulous fantasy since Wizard Of Oz.

But read the book if you've seen the film and you'll find the book is all about psychology....it's a masterpiece.

  • this movie is the shit

  • i remeber the first time i ever watched this i cryed with my boyfriend we both cryed haha that wuza good night xD

  • This scene terrified me as a child because the idea of dying in lots of ways is frightening and learning about death at only 2 years old. My first loss was when I was 12. I was afraid to watch this scene again until now because I know the movie is make believe and death cannot be avoided sometimes. And seeing Artax alive in the end made me happy, hence resurrection.

  • i dunno y but i feel more sad when animals die in movies than humans lol..

  • great movie though it doesn't teach anything about the concept and reality of death seeing as how all the characters that die come back to life at the end

  • @HelloFade2 If you read the book Artax dies in the swamp and doesn't come back. He can talk as well.

  • In the original German release...it played Theme of Sadness when Artax dies AND you see little air bubbles in the water...

I found this recently and found it to be more sad than this version...but only a little bit (mainly the air bubbles particularly).

  • I'm a horse and I find it offenses. NIGH!!!!!

  • Although you see Artax sinking in the swamp, you must not forget that in the end, all of Fantasia gets put back in it's original state, and you see Atreyu with Artax as well =)

  • during the filming they let the actual horse die in that mud.

  • @GrimsonGhost what? no they didnt. where did you get that info from ??

  • @GrimsonGhost What do you think's holding the seem to my refridgator on.

  • @GrimsonGhost

oh man i was sad remembering this scene and watching it as a kid but after reading that comment I couldnt help but bust out laughing.

  • ok so i found out on the making of german part on here

that the horse is a mare, a female!

    the breed was welsh pony

its great to know after all these years!

  • i eat Artax for breakfast....

  • The two dislikes were horses

  • @MiddleEasternBorder Looks like another horse disliked it as it shows 3 now.

  • Beautiful movie!!

  • Some people seem to be misunderstanding this scene. The swamp doesn't take someone who is sad, it has the ability to MAKE you sad, to make you lose faith in yourself. Atreyu was strong of mind and will (as we seen many times in the film), so he fought it. Artex could not, the sadness of the swamp engulfed him, so he gave up and let himself die.

  • I understand that part. That explains where Bastian narrated in the scene, "Everyone knew that whoever let the sadness over take him would sink into the swamp." I remember that very well.

  • @ThisIsMyBoomStick Yes, in the novel this is even more obvious: The swamp causes people to be sad and let themselves sink. However, Atreyu is unaffected by the swamp because he is wearing Auryn, the Empress' pendant, which protects him. When Atreyu sees Artax start to sink, he offers to give him Auryn, but Artax refuses because it is not his place to wear it and begs Atreyu to leave so that he doesn't see him die.

  • @bilingualviv Damn, that is even more heartbreaking than what's in the film :( :(

  • Comment removed

  • @ThisIsMyBoomStick also it explains in the book that atreyu had Auryn..and artax did not so the sadness consumed him.

  • I still cry every time I watch this scene and imagine I will every time to come!

  • man i cried my eyes out

  • i remember i watched his for he first time in years my nephew and his cousin were so depressed after this scene

  • I remember watching this as a kid screaming at the tv "ARTAX YOU HAVE TO TRY!!!"

  • I always thought of it as being the depressed kind of sadness. The kind where you don't feel anything at all, the kind where you don't care. Atreyu was crying, but that just means he was still feeling something.

  • OK I think I have it figured out. (sorry to make so many confusing comments xD)

It was a German movie, based on a German book, produced in Germany, mostly filmed in Germany, but It was first filmed in English??? Then it was dubbed in German... which was released beforehand... I have no idea what I'm talking about, does anyone else know what the deal is with this movie?

  • Muito triste essa cena.....chorei riiiiiiiiiiiios no cinema, eu era pequenininha....até hoje choro, não tem jeito. Estou escrevendo e chorando......ai ai que saudades da minha infância.,....

  • Possibly one of the most sad scenes in children's movies.'

  • Me too, 12 years later and I still cry..

  • wow been watching this movie since i was 5 and even now it still makes me cry no matter what

  • This scene caught everyone off guard.

I remember everyone being shocked and then crying our eyes out like we were about to be executed or something.

Yeah. I little warning would have been nice.

Very bizarre moviegoing experience. Talk about the wild dreams one had after taking this trip. They really don't make'm like this anymore.

  • Nostalgia Critic: "Sorry Wilbur, I just don't think my mother ever loved me. Just found out my business went bankrupt, my girlfriend just left me, took all the oats, and I lost my sister to the glue factory. Yeah, well, life's a b**** and then ya sink. Sorry, Wilbur!"

How does Artax get depressed? I didn't think horses had feelings...but this is still a very heartbreaking scene. :_(

  • @365rl

All animals have feelings, (I.E. Love, Maternal, Caring, Pain, Sadness) all of that, tho we all get sad or happy about different things depending on what species we are and what are habits/environment is like, IE like how black widows eat the males if they stick around.

So yes horses have feelings as well as every other animal.

  • @LuckStarify Yeah, but what does Artax have to be depressed about? It's a tragic scene, but it makes no sense...

  • @365rl Better yet, why doesn't Atreyu sink too? He's the one crying - was that fake? He was crying but he wasn't sad? I don't get it.

  • I used to think Atreyu was a girl. Because of this scene... the high pitched squealing.

  • @oakdog6079 Check out the girl Pepper from the movie Annie. I used to get she and Atreyu mixed up all the time. They look so much alike. lol.

  • That best explains why Atreyu was an indian.

  • What you said, "Atreyu looking like the Pepper girl from Annie," that's how and why a lot of people got confused on weather Atreyu was a boy or a girl. His physical looks, his Indian clothing, and his long-hair around covering his ears, all of that is what made him look more of a "Plains Indian", the ones who hunt the purple buffalo.

  • I always knew Atreyu was a boy. Because he was an indian, and a lot of indians have their hair long.

  • PWNED!!! pl0x lol, now i could laugh about it since im not a little kid anymore, stupid horse...

  • I read that the horse actually died while they were filming this scene...that makes this even sadder!!

  • @pelytcb I remember that me and my cousins deleted this screne from our vhs when we were little... because we all children cried every time at this scene :)

  • @pelytcb how could it die? it was on a hydraulic platform lowering it down.. no way it could actually sink. It was trained to stand there up to its neck in water/mud.

  • Artaaaaaax!!! Stupid horse!!!!

  • To understand happiness one must know sadness hence why this part was put in the film to the cynics sit down roll a big joint and watch the film then put some slack comment on a movie that is pure magic or have you Forgotten what its like to be a child

  • Why is it inappropriate for children?

  • @mugencivic88 Because he's one of these new aged soccer moms who thinks "death" is TOO MUCH for children...even though it was a pivotal concept in the Lion King.

People these days are too sensitive I swear. Might be the pokemon cartoon skewing people's perception of whats appropriate.

  • @mugencivic88 Because the children might learn about death.

  • @mrdisneyfreak13

I found it very sad when I was a kid. I cried a lot.

Also, I found it awesome. I don't understand why some people think we should shield children from moving, emotional, powerful things like this. Kids are smarter and sturdier than today's media seems to think.

Even as a kid I understood how clever the metaphor was.

  • @BohemianBlasphemy Thank you

  • @mrdisneyfreak13 You're right, no one ever dies ever. Bambi's mom turned out just fine, Joan of Arc escaped the fire and married a handsome prince! Everybody lives forever! :D

    ...Ignorant fuck parent....

  • I cried during this scene. Not now, but a looooong time ago.

  • @strongman17

    So did I.

  • @strongman17 exactly!! i was 4 when this movie came out and i remember ALWAYS running to one of my aunts to hug them when this scene came!! :( I mean its sad now but i cant cry anymore :(

  • LOL !!! moi j'ai toujours préféré Gmork

  • you didn't get this scene at all. It's an emotional roller coaster, Atreyu is panicking cause his horse is about to die.

  • I'm crying now

  • T_T

  • essie

  • im sure there was a longer version of artax sinking it lasts for about 5 minutes and his head goes right under, i could never watch that bit.

  • Now he's a tattoo artist.

  • Have you noticed when Atreyu says "Artax! You're Sinking!" he has an accent?

    Hmmm lol

  • this is so sad..I love the movie so much, its magical.

  • I never got through the end of this film :(

  • I cry everytime i see this scene...

  • sillysoz either get some professional mental help or do the world a favor and kill yourself!

  • When Atreyu first sets out on his quest, his horse Artax is grey with dark mane and tail. However, when they stop to rest and eat by the stream, Artax is white with white mane and tail. By the end of the film, when Bastian and Falkor flies over Fantasia, they spot Atreyu and Artax - low and behold - Artax's mane and taile are dark again.

  • So yes, sorry but the first horse actually died. They had problems on the set and when it sank in the swamp of sadness, it really sank and died. So there are two different horses in the film.

  • Where did you hear that? I visited the place they made the movie (Bavaria Filmstadt) in Munich a couple of weeks ago, and asked the tour guide about it. She denied it, and it seemed like she had never heard about this before. Besides, it is common to use more than one animal in movies, since different horses, dogs etc. are trained for different scenes. It could be true though, I don't know.

  • This is sad but that yelp from atreyu at 2:54 is hysterical.

  • Thats him crying whilst breathing in, Don't tease him >.>

  • i cried for days when i first saw this movie

  • The horse died in this scene in real life because of a hidraulic failure in the system...really sad.

  • no it didnt die, the horse's name was "miss sophie" and she belonged to the horseback-riding club "rg-strasslach" near munich, where my sister and i went in the early 90s. I SAT ON THAT HORSE'S BACK lol so it COULDNT have died. it is mathematically impossible... believe me :) i saw her.

  • Also, anyone that has anything bad to say about this movie was obviously born after this movie and is therefore completely lame. Prove me wrong.

  • I remember crying my eyes out as a kid and now seeing it again as an adult, I remember what it was to feel true sadness for the first time.

  • The best part of the movie. Its starting to show its age a little now. still a great childrens film. The empress's name is Moon Child by the way!!!

  • horse is like "sorry i dont mean to be sad my mother never loved me, my father told me i was a orphan, and my sis went to the glue factory. sorry kid hhdfbcthr" *ded*

  • Someone please tell me how they did this.

  • ...-sobs-... I hated this scene, it was so depressing ;.;

  • THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER

  • it would have been cool if artex came back as a demon horse and ate atreyu.

  • this part of the film make me cry

  • This still makes me cry, twenty + years since I watched it as a little kid

  • man i cried my eyes out when i saw this part of the movie, so many years ago, its still sad to watch

  • this film is amazing and i have a horse in real life and that part makes me so sad =[

  • Me too. I remember watching this as a child in the theater. You could hear people literally weeping for Artax after he died. It was amazing and sad at the same time. It was one of the greatest films I remember from my childhood.

  • Noah Hathaway (Atreyu) did so well acting that scene. I watched the making of it, and it looked really difficult to act. To Noah Hathaway, WELL DONE!!!

  • This movie made want to read

  • so sad...i can't see this part without crying.

I wanna thank to a person who aploaded this secne.

  • that horse went to the big glue factory in the sky

  • The music is the saddest part.

  • Its Sad but so Real at the same time....Love the music

  • i saw this movie first when i was 7years (now 12) and i still cry a little bit :'(

  • I am crying still and havin´t watch this movie like 6 yeras ago :'(

  • This scene always fascinated me. As a kid I don't think I understood it fully, and it never made me cry. But since I bought the dvd a while back and watched it again, I cry everytime :( This scene is so reflective upon what we all endure in life.

  • "whoever let the sadness overtake him would sink into the swamp..."

This was the first movie I ever saw at a cinema and maybe the first one altogether because I wasn't allowed to watch a lot of tv. It was hard to sit still for so long but it impressed me a lot. I read the book a lot later, when I was 17, and discovered so much more to the story! It has so much wisdom in it, I think it marked my entire generation and my life!

  • @mugencivic88 mee too

  • Is Atreyu wearing mascara?

  • =[ thats such a sad part of the film

  • this scene always makes me cry but a brill film

  • GREAT FLICK!!!! This scene still makes me cry. This movie actually made my little girl want to learn how to read. She is now 12 and an Honor Student. The power of reading and the power of the imagination.

  • =( NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • i still cry when i see it :(

    lol

  • When I was a kid I felt the whole world was coming to an end whenever I would watch this movie and it came to this scene. Saw it just now after almost 20 years and I started bawling like a baby.

  • Was the part where we see Artax sink all the way down cut in this video? Because I clearly remember seeing artax's head sink all the way in and hear his cry before it blacks out and cuts to a close up of Atreyu in the english vhs.

  • Artax was sad cause he couldn't talk the way he could in the book.

  • What an awesome movie. I recently talked to some 18ish year old kids and the have NEVER SEEN THIS MOVIE! This movie was the equivalent of taking mushrooms at age 7. It blew my mind, opened my imagination more than any other movie at the time.

  • Not fond of the metaphore, but definately!

  • i always cry :')

  • The saddest thing I ever saw in my life.

  • I remember vividly as a kid that the scene showed the horse going down completely under the water, every vid I seen it show is fading away, the one I saw as a kid made me cry like if I lost a loved one.

  • shit this is so depressing

i cant believe i watched this constantly as a kid geeeez

  • i loves it but i cant help but cry ;[ every time god get with the awsome effects

  • if he became sad after artax sunk why didn't he sink too?

  • He was Wearing the necklace!

  • Yes, it protected him.

  • No no no ! I always cry no matter how many times I see this ..

  • As much as they sucked back then, I think these kind of scenes helped shape me as a kid, they weren't entirely bad experiences. The world isn't a perfect place and sometimes good things are taken from us, simple as

  • Though I've seen this film lots of times I still get emotional whenever I see this scene. Very convincingly done!

  • I just watched this movie this summer after not having seen it in so long. I loved it as a kid but didn't quite grasp the metaphorical significance as I do now. This movie's deep, and I imagine the book is heaps better.

  • I've always found this scence, even as a kid pretty "Tramatic" for me...litteraly.

And one more thing....is that a Feminine Dude or a fla chested Chick?

I was confused at a child to :-)

  • I love this scene!

Here's something I don't get though: After Artax died, Atreyu was extremely sad, so why didn't he sink too?

  • he was sinking when that flying dog showed up

  • I think Atreyu didn't sink becouse he had a mission to accomplish, a goal in his life.

You sink in the mud only if you are complety depressed and without hope. When he lost Artax he was very sad but the darkness didn't take his heart

  • Oh, gotcha. Thanks!!!

    ♥ :)

  • Atreyu couldn't sink because he had the Auryn on his neck, and that protected him.

    I love this book!!!!
