great, after years of therapy, I've stumbled upon this scene again. I cant stop myself from crying now... I need a childlike Empress to balance me out.
I first saw this scene probably twenty years ago now... and to this very day it still gives me goosebumps to watch it through. This either makes it a great film, or a film that's slightly traumatized me.
If you give up hope, you lose everything you love. But can you find something to hope for, you will survive. Children need to hear it said many times.
glad I never watched or ever heard of this as a lil kid.I would of cried my eyes out after seeing this scene & wouldnt want to ever watch this movie again... even @ 19 this kinda made me sad seeing the horse die
Awful scene, but I've checked this out and not only did the horse survive it was offered to the boy who played Atreyu after filming. Where the myth abou the horse really dying is anyone's guess but my guess is another movie company who just coulnd't believe another country was capable of creating the most fabulous fantasy since Wizard Of Oz.
But read the book if you've seen the film and you'll find the book is all about psychology....it's a masterpiece.
This scene terrified me as a child because the idea of dying in lots of ways is frightening and learning about death at only 2 years old. My first loss was when I was 12. I was afraid to watch this scene again until now because I know the movie is make believe and death cannot be avoided sometimes. And seeing Artax alive in the end made me happy, hence resurrection.
great movie though it doesn't teach anything about the concept and reality of death seeing as how all the characters that die come back to life at the end
Although you see Artax sinking in the swamp, you must not forget that in the end, all of Fantasia gets put back in it's original state, and you see Atreyu with Artax as well =)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Poor boy don't you know? Horses are inhuman and have no souls, therefore not having emotions. You're horse is sinking because you made a dumb ass decision to bring a fat ass horse into an unfinished parking lot where the cement hasn't dried yet. It's okay because you get saved by a flying ferret shnouser.
Some people seem to be misunderstanding this scene. The swamp doesn't take someone who is sad, it has the ability to MAKE you sad, to make you lose faith in yourself. Atreyu was strong of mind and will (as we seen many times in the film), so he fought it. Artex could not, the sadness of the swamp engulfed him, so he gave up and let himself die.
I understand that part. That explains where Bastian narrated in the scene, "Everyone knew that whoever let the sadness over take him would sink into the swamp." I remember that very well.
@ThisIsMyBoomStick Yes, in the novel this is even more obvious: The swamp causes people to be sad and let themselves sink. However, Atreyu is unaffected by the swamp because he is wearing Auryn, the Empress' pendant, which protects him. When Atreyu sees Artax start to sink, he offers to give him Auryn, but Artax refuses because it is not his place to wear it and begs Atreyu to leave so that he doesn't see him die.
I always thought of it as being the depressed kind of sadness. The kind where you don't feel anything at all, the kind where you don't care. Atreyu was crying, but that just means he was still feeling something.
OK I think I have it figured out. (sorry to make so many confusing comments xD)
It was a German movie, based on a German book, produced in Germany, mostly filmed in Germany, but It was first filmed in English??? Then it was dubbed in German... which was released beforehand... I have no idea what I'm talking about, does anyone else know what the deal is with this movie?

How does Artax get depressed? I didn't think horses had feelings...but this is still a very heartbreaking scene. :_(
All animals have feelings, (I.E. Love, Maternal, Caring, Pain, Sadness) all of that, tho we all get sad or happy about different things depending on what species we are and what are habits/environment is like, IE like how black widows eat the males if they stick around.
So yes horses have feelings as well as every other animal.
What you said, "Atreyu looking like the Pepper girl from Annie," that's how and why a lot of people got confused on weather Atreyu was a boy or a girl. His physical looks, his Indian clothing, and his long-hair around covering his ears, all of that is what made him look more of a "Plains Indian", the ones who hunt the purple buffalo.
@pelytcb I remember that me and my cousins deleted this screne from our vhs when we were little... because we all children cried every time at this scene :)
@pelytcb how could it die? it was on a hydraulic platform lowering it down.. no way it could actually sink. It was trained to stand there up to its neck in water/mud.
To understand happiness one must know sadness hence why this part was put in the film to the cynics sit down roll a big joint and watch the film then put some slack comment on a movie that is pure magic or have you Forgotten what its like to be a child
@mugencivic88 Because he's one of these new aged soccer moms who thinks "death" is TOO MUCH for children...even though it was a pivotal concept in the Lion King.
People these days are too sensitive I swear. Might be the pokemon cartoon skewing people's perception of whats appropriate.
I found it very sad when I was a kid. I cried a lot.
Also, I found it awesome. I don't understand why some people think we should shield children from moving, emotional, powerful things like this. Kids are smarter and sturdier than today's media seems to think.
Even as a kid I understood how clever the metaphor was.
@mrdisneyfreak13 You're right, no one ever dies ever. Bambi's mom turned out just fine, Joan of Arc escaped the fire and married a handsome prince! Everybody lives forever! :D
@strongman17 exactly!! i was 4 when this movie came out and i remember ALWAYS running to one of my aunts to hug them when this scene came!! :( I mean its sad now but i cant cry anymore :(
When Atreyu first sets out on his quest, his horse Artax is grey with dark mane and tail. However, when they stop to rest and eat by the stream, Artax is white with white mane and tail. By the end of the film, when Bastian and Falkor flies over Fantasia, they spot Atreyu and Artax - low and behold - Artax's mane and taile are dark again.
So yes, sorry but the first horse actually died. They had problems on the set and when it sank in the swamp of sadness, it really sank and died. So there are two different horses in the film.
Where did you hear that? I visited the place they made the movie (Bavaria Filmstadt) in Munich a couple of weeks ago, and asked the tour guide about it. Besides, it is common to use more than one animal in movies, since different horses, dogs etc. are trained for different scenes. It could be true though, I don't know.
no it didnt die, the horse's name was "miss sophie" and she belonged to the horseback-riding club "rg-strasslach" near munich, where my sister and i went in the early 90s. I SAT ON THAT HORSE'S BACK lol so it COULDNT have died. it is mathematically impossible... believe me :) i saw her.
horse is like "sorry i dont mean to be sad my mother never loved me, my father told me i was a orphan, and my sis went to the glue factory. sorry kid hhdfbcthr" *ded*
Me too. I remember watching this as a child in the theater. You could hear people literally weeping for Artax after he died. It was amazing and sad at the same time. It was one of the greatest films I remember from my childhood.
Noah Hathaway (Atreyu) did so well acting that scene. I watched the making of it, and it looked really difficult to act. To Noah Hathaway, WELL DONE!!!
This scene always fascinated me. As a kid I don't think I understood it fully, and it never made me cry. But since I bought the dvd a while back and watched it again, I cry everytime :( This scene is so reflective upon what we all endure in life.
"whoever let the sadness overtake him would sink into the swamp..."
This was the first movie I ever saw at a cinema and maybe the first one altogether because I wasn't allowed to watch a lot of tv. It was hard to sit still for so long but it impressed me a lot. I read the book a lot later, when I was 17, and discovered so much more to the story! It has so much wisdom in it, I think it marked my entire generation and my life!
GREAT FLICK!!!! This scene still makes me cry. This movie actually made my little girl want to learn how to read. She is now 12 and an Honor Student. The power of reading and the power of the imagination.
When I was a kid I felt the whole world was coming to an end whenever I would watch this movie and it came to this scene. Saw it just now after almost 20 years and I started bawling like a baby.
Was the part where we see Artax sink all the way down cut in this video? Because I clearly remember seeing artax's head sink all the way in and hear his cry before it blacks out and cuts to a close up of Atreyu in the english vhs.
What an awesome movie. I recently talked to some 18ish year old kids and the have NEVER SEEN THIS MOVIE! This movie was the equivalent of taking mushrooms at age 7. It blew my mind, opened my imagination more than any other movie at the time.
I remember vividly as a kid that the scene showed the horse going down completely under the water, every vid I seen it show is fading away, the one I saw as a kid made me cry like if I lost a loved one.
As much as they sucked back then, I think these kind of scenes helped shape me as a kid, they weren't entirely bad experiences. The world isn't a perfect place and sometimes good things are taken from us, simple as
I just watched this movie this summer after not having seen it in so long. I loved it as a kid but didn't quite grasp the metaphorical significance as I do now. This movie's deep, and I imagine the book is heaps better.

this film is amazing and i have a horse in real life and that part makes me so sad =[
candymilkshake 2 years ago 5

Jaegar19Ultima 3 years ago
Artax was sad cause he couldn't talk the way he could in the book.

What an awesome movie. I recently talked to some 18ish year old kids and the have NEVER SEEN THIS MOVIE! This movie was the equivalent of taking mushrooms at age 7. It blew my mind, opened my imagination more than any other movie at the time.

The saddest thing I ever saw in my life.

The world isn't a perfect place and sometimes good things are taken from us, simple as
achmedlolol 3 years ago 2
Though I've seen this film lots of times I still get emotional whenever I see this scene. Very convincingly done!
Magrith888 3 years ago
I just watched this movie this summer after not having seen it in so long. I loved it as a kid but didn't quite grasp the metaphorical significance as I do now. This movie's deep, and I imagine the book is heaps better.
Katydid1286 3 years ago
I've always found this scence, even as a kid pretty "Tramatic" for me...litteraly.
And one more thing....is that a Feminine Dude or a fla chested Chick?
I was confused at a child to :-)

I love this scene!
Here's something I don't get though: After Artax died, Atreyu was extremely sad, so why didn't he sink too?
TiGeRgIrL17 3 years ago
he was sinking when that flying dog showed up
t5y665yrty56 3 years ago
I think Atreyu didn't sink becouse he had a mission to accomplish, a goal in his life.
You sink in the mud only if you are complety depressed and without hope. When he lost Artax he was very sad but the darkness didn't take his heart
armaduck2000 3 years ago
Oh, gotcha. Thanks!!!
♥ :)
TiGeRgIrL17 3 years ago
Atreyu couldn't sink because he had the Auryn on his neck, and that protected him.
I love this book!!!!
