The towers fell straight down because that's the direction in which gravity acts.
There would have to have been an immense sideways force applied for them to do anything else.
The columns failed virtually simultaneously because the failure point overload was applied virtually simultaneously.

Its copper jacket was completely intact. While the bullet's nose appeared normal, the tail was compressed laterally on one side.
