In Welsh the Corgi owner was taxed on the length of the dog's tail so they cut them off and it became standard for the breed. Some Pembroke's are born with a natural bob. On why the Cardigan's tail were not removed I could not answer that question.

Some of my Pembroke puppies are born without and with tails so if you have a Vet telling you they are born with out only he needs to read more in the breed. I have gone to Davis and have a degree. I have been a breeder for over 20 years of tailless breeds like the PWC and Queensland heelers. Don't change any thing about you video it was great I plan on advising my AKC friends to watch it

I have four crazy corgis. This video was a blast to watch. I breed corgis and my Vet docks their tails and removes their dew claws. So when they do their jobs at herding a sheep or in our case a cow does not step on the tail and rip it from their body. So for cosmetic well once you have see the horror of a bloody stump and bone left behind you will know what I mean. Ignorance is bliss.

Welsh Corgis are born with tails and they have them "docked" when they are very young. Yes, I would think it is cruel but that is the nature of a Pembroke. the Cardigan corgi is left with the tail. The reason the tails are docked is that many years ago, the corgis were used as working dogs for sheep, cow, etc...herding.. The shorter the tail meant no taxes the Welsh farmer had to pay. The corgis were brought by Flemish weavers to Wales. Also called fairy dogs. Woodland fairies rode them.

Love the video... but as the owner of an un-docked Pem, I must point out that Pembrokes DO have tails... it's just that unfortunately it is still okay in the US to cut them off to be "breed standard". I'm so surprised how many other corgi owners aren't aware that their dog was born with a tail... so, please no more "tail vs no tail" as the distinction for the cardigan and the pem... (also 3:32 is definitely a Pem with a tail!)

Most developed countries have passed laws prohibiting docking and cropping, including the UK. In rare instances, a corgi may be born with the so-called "natural bob", but this is not the norm.  See next post for links to just a few of many examples on the web of undocked corgis (including an Australian Champion!)

Natural bobs are possible but rare. It's illegal now in Europe and for good reason (namely b/c they are born with tails!).
