I am British and I was living in south Israel at the time working in archaeological expeditions. I personally experienced the fear of rockets being launched by Hamas, and we ran for cover.

Hamas members do not "defend themselves" but rather carry out terrorist attacks. In turn, Israel responds. Therefore, it is Israel that is defending herself.
