I've never seen this until today. As a deep, deep fan of the band and Neil Finn in particular, I don't think I've ever come to terms with Paul taking himself out. It's just so sad for his family and for his fans. Moreover, I feel like Hester was THE perfect foil for Nei's songwriting and was a tremendously underrated drummer. Not to mention a very talented musician. Wherever he is I hope he is peaceful.
One of my abiding memories of Paul ishsi walking around the edge of the balcony at the Birmingham Concert Hall during a song whilst Neil Finn was on the drums and I thought at any time he could fall into the crowd below at any time! What a great talent, it's a shame he spent that night alone in that park 6 years ago.
I was lucky enough to see them live twice (1989 and 1991) and they put on a great show. They made some incredibly smart albums but never really broke into the US like they deserved to. I thought Paul was the soul of the band and haven't really liked any of their recent work too much. I also have long-term depression and can identify with his situation. I hope he found some peace.
I guess when a band is all you've ever known and then your home life falls apart with your wife leaving and taking your two kids there isn't much left and he got lonely and depressed....
I'm going to see crowded house live for the first time in May. I'm nearly 26, and i have only recently become a fan of crowded house. i was very shocked and upset to hear about paul hester's death. He was very good looking and talented !. I wonder if he would have reunited with crowded house in 2007 and this year for the tours if he was still alive ?. I would love to have seen him live !.
-sigh Paul was just a regular guy that wanted to be a regular guy.Great drummer miss him. I used to like Denton's interviewing style, and when he would ask audience members to share their life stories.
isn't it the case that being in a band in which there is a clear writer/singer/leader makes it difficult for the other members?
Neil had to go solo anyway as he was effectively the driving force (albeit brilliantly).
For instance, Nick Seymour was apparently trying to develop the band's image as a 'serious' group rather than the light-hearted ANZAC band: hence he felt that the group broke up with at least another album in them.
So many people miss you Paul. Having suffered from depression my entire life, Paul's death hit me really really hard. He seems like such a beautiful guy. Having been in Melbourne on vacation just 2 months before he died, I can't listen to Crowded House without becoming emotional. My best dream is that Paul is in a really beautiful place now.
But Whenever i search "Paul Hester" on google, the websites that come up, say things like
"Wave of sorrow as Paul Hester hangs himself"
or
"Crowded House drummer found dead"
and
"Paul Hester is dead"
I appreciate people are trying to remember Paul but why not remember the things Paul did when he was alive, with Split Enz, Crowded House, on Hessie's Shed, with the Deckchairs, on TV, saying funny things. Why not that?
Denton may sound a bit 'off', but he's got an emotionally charged interviewee to deal with. Another might try to make Hessie cry or try to make a big thing in order to big themselves up. Denton is simply keeping the interview light enough and not overshadowing his interviewee. Ironically, Jonathan Ross would have done the same (with a bit more swearing), whereas Mike Parkinson would have ground a few more tears out of Paul...
andy denton is retiring . pity coz he is the best interviewee. .paul hesters outpour in this interview is captivating.nice to hear the reason coming from himself why he left chouse.fair enuff paul
this is an incredibly honest interview, rock n roll looks like major booze and parties and good time stuff, but the reality is, your going round the world on a fucked noisy bus, having no time to stay in a city for more than two minutes, lonely as fuck, the interviewer shouldnt be so light hearted about it

What a good looking guy with such a nice smile. The best thing about him was that he was beautiful inside and out.

Paul Became a fine Resident of elwood Melbourne Australia.
Where he was loved & is still loved for being "Hessy" not a Rock n Roll star.
Sharing a coffee and a laugh with Hessy is sadly missed.
Go Demons...watching footy with Paul was a hoot.
