The reason his swing looks weird is because he starts his backswing on a steep plane. If he came into the golf ball on the same plane he would pop up his drives. The hitch in his swing is to shallow out his swing plane which will give him more control and better distance.

i was having a very bad off day at the range yesterday...so i just decided to let lose and not try to "swing" the golf club, but rather focus on hitting the ball. this idea worked very well for me. and after a few swings, i realized that my swing was identical to rickie fowler's swing. its really unbelievable how unique his swing is, but he still does all the necessary things to hit the ball well
