Her pants bother her! Hell I can relate to that one, as a kid I hated underwear and never wore any for a long time and jeans oh those our out of the question unless they're soft. The underwear problem, came back though!!!
She is an amazing woman win an amazing story but does no one else find it sad that she has never seemed and does not seem able to experience romantic love?
@MissZillaable I'm not sad for her because she doesn't have an interest in a romantic relationship...if you don't have an interest then you don't have an interest..it's that simple. She's a busy woman, she doesn't feel she is missing out. And she isn't. <3
@MissZillaable I'm an autistic woman too. I have two children, and have had two failed marriages. I love my kids completely, but have given up on men. I don't see that as sad, I see that as recognizing my fulfillment in life will come from other areas. I have plans for my future, and I feel very satisfied with my life, and its direction. I see folks who idolize romantic love as the ones to pity, as it so often eludes them, and they spend their lives wishing for what they may never achieve.
@TheSpankymonkey Your sarcasm is misplaced, and your arrogance is unbecoming. You are assuming a lot about me, based on one phrase, and are jumping to the conclusion that you therefore have the right to judge me and what you THINK are my actions. That's stupid.
I am not a man-hater. I just don't want a relationship, and don't think I need one to feel fulfilled. Celibacy is my choice, and I'm happy in it.
@Crunchy68 - I am not assuming anything, i quoted your own words. If they aren't your words then please do forgive me, otherwise spare me the "you don't know me" style of retort, it shows a lack of imagination.
You did NOT quote my words, or the intention behind them. "Given up on 50% of the population" implies that I will not even SPEAK to a man, as does your mean use of the word "nice". I respect men worth respecting. Why should that mean I want to date one? I'm allowed to be celibate if I want. I impose it on nobody else. Why the hell do you butt in to my business anyway? What an asshole you are.
@Crunchy68 ""but have given up on men" - Are these not your words, the same words quoted in my original comment. If not, then accept my apologies. If they are..... do one.
@MissZillaable "does no one else find it sad that she has never seemed and does not seem able to experience romantic love?" - Not really, how can you feel sorry for someone that can't feel it in the way that you feel it. You are only sorry because of what you think is romantic love, what's to say it would be anything like that for her? Just be happy that she feels happy and is in control of her life.
@cloudani. How about the fact that she's a PHD and teaches at Harvard? How about the fact that she knows how animals think. Don't you think insight like that might be of some value to the world?

Learn Something of value!!!!Think of someone you Love Being mistreated for being different. Are you trying to be cool??? You fail. Thank you for posting this film .
You need to learn more about Temple before making a claim like that.
She believes that these animals deserve respect. Taking a quote from her movie, "Nature is cruel but we don't have to be". "I wouldn't want to be torn apart by a lion, Id much rather be killed in a slaughter house if it was done right" and thats what she did. Half of the United States and I believe 1/3 of the world handles these animals in humane systems that she has invented.
@ThumperBunny43 Damn, you're rude. If you don't like Miss Temple, quit watching these and just bitching about it afterwards. She never said animals have autism, just that she has some similarities with them because of her autism. Also, like amm019 said, animals are intelligent, but they don't know what slaughterhouses are until they're in one. They cannot like nor dislike something they know nothing about. Go troll somewhere else next time than a documentary.
@ThumperBunny43 She has scientific theories relating to her own abilities of perceiving our world and that animals perceive the world in a similar way. You personally seem to lack the ability to perceive and interpret information without changing it to fit your personal agenda.
Some 20% of people with Asperger's fail to meet the diagnostic criteria in adulthood. I'm 29 and I feel I have reached that point in the best couple years. Now I think of it as having the best of both "operating systems."
What drives me crazy is people who ride the bus with their I-pods blaring away. It is hard enough riding the bus without people adding to the cacophony.
Wow, I listened to you speak about your discomfort regarding certain if not all clothing and thought oh my gawd, I have a lot of that as well. Have never liked anything that made me feel bound, or anything tight like jeans, more a leggings type where you don't really feel them on and definitely sans bra all the way...tshirts and leggings I find most comfortable and hopefully no socks either. I just always thought it was comfort preference, perhaps there's more to it for me...?
Omg, I realized there is no such thing as autism, Not liking itchy clothing, loud buzzing noses, motor cycles buzzing past, cars back firing.. annoying people, office work environment.. I think I'm autistic too!
the phone too... Me I have to say I can't stand an alarm (wake up alarm, oven timer, an so on), and also the PHONE!.. it rings ONCE and I 've picked it up!
A good example of asperger's syndrome is the character of Gregory House from the show "HOUSE". That character is supposed to have aspergers and he's also a medical genius.
No, the character House does NOT have Asperger's Syndrome. In Lines in the Sand, Wilson says, "You're not autistic... you don't even have Asperger's."
Besides, he is adept at reading body language of those around him, which would almost prove that he does not have Aspergers. He manipulates those around him, watching body language to see how they react in order to adjust his approach. He ignores the body language of others when he does not want to respond to it.
@kbenge89 I don't think the "Dr. House" character is supposed to have AS. He's just a dick (albeit a fascinating genius of a dick). But Temperance Brennan from Bones IS an archetypal aspie, and of course there is the character "Abed" on Community. Aspie characters are becoming more popular on TV all the time.
My son does have asperger's syndrome and the way that she describes how they act in public is exactly the way he was as a small child. It was very difficult to deal with. It wasn't like he was having a tantrum. He would clearly become overwhelmed with everything and then he'd just cry and cry until we got him out of the environment. But if I just let him play alone in his bedroom he'd be content for hours on end.
I wouldn't doubt it. Being female is still the bigger "handicap" in a lot of life's endeavors — just more subtle now. I bet they stopped decorating her car with livestock genitalia once her designs started saving them millions of dollars.
Though even with that argument I don't want to detract from what she went through as an autistic person in the early 60s. I find people like her so inspiring because she just DID IT. She just did what she wanted to do and didn't let other people's expectations of her gender or condition limit her potential.
@lizajeans funny how women have such a small recognition fr having this condition. But how she has helped so many by so much. Praise to her and others trying to do similar.
I've enjoyed this documentary so far but the comments concerning people's own social introversion and anxiety is really annoying me. No, you don't have a label that can call yourself. You don't have autism. You're not on the spectrum at all. At most you're affected by OCD but you do not have autism. Stop using it as a shield against your own perceived shortcomings.
agreed, but autistic spectrum itself is just a label. I do not think that every autistic person thinks like her or like an animal. Remember that she is just a particular case and that there may be lots of causes that can manifest the symptoms of autism.
I think that if I were to meet her, I wouldn't even notice that she's autistic. She really seems pretty "normal"(not exactly the best word) and extremely articulate to me.
This is so goddamn inspiring. My younger brother Andy and I grew up the same way, and have the same traits now as adults. Only now am I realizing how powerful Ms. Grandin's message is.
Sometimes I think I am somewhat autistics. I was so shy as a kid and had panic attacks a lot and barely talked. Was social for a while in my 20s but now (in my 40s) I hate being around people. that sounds awful, but I do. very uncomfortable around them. Don't feel pain when people are hurting (except close family members) but if an animal is suffering it makes me hurt so bad inside. Sorry people, that is just the way I am.
I find the reclusive, introverted qualities of some autistic people attractive and somewhat intriguing. I would rather spend time with someone like that than someone who is social and prone to party.
i avoid getting my hairut for weeks coz i will head out to g geti cut then drive past the shop about ten time then decide gint it and tell myself i wll be ok to et it done another day
There's a cinema near me that does autistic screenings, I didn't realise about the whole sensory overload thing with autism until now. I didn't understand why there were screenings before, now I know.
I'm almost completely homebound due to the sensory challenges I face. I can't be around kids or dogs at all and July 4th is a nightmare. I do have coping tools, but they only help at home. Psychiatry as mentioned in Pt. 3 is a difficult and damaging road. It took me 10+ years to find a good therapist and he is learning "on his feet".
it is sad that some people still think that because you can't function and communicate as well as the NTs your stupid we are wonderful creative people that make true and loyal friends
Yeah, I had someone tell me I was braindead from vaccines and wasn't allowed to talk about autistics being smart...lol? My IQ is in the 98th percentile, if vaccines cause that we should get more.
I have Asperger's Disorder and a 142 IQ, I am also a meat and livestock science major and I resent the remark from Adair that says that retards are subhuman and should be killed, my son has autism and I would fight that "sack of shit" that would dare hurt my son or wish him dead like an old momma cow...
I'm not a nazi, far from it, i'm a very liberal guy, but one thing I do agree with that the nazi's had right is eliminating retards. They are sub-humans who weaken the human race. It's scary to admit, but a fact.
Why do you keep posting the same moronic comment on every video? And where the fuck does it come from? Temple Grandin has a genius level IQ and is NOT retarded, asshole.
I do have the ability to block him from commenting, but I'm not going to. Though I disagree with what he says, I believe he has the right to voice his opinions.
I will be praying for you!! What is wrong with you. They are humans just like you maybe you are the one with the difference and they are normal! I work with Autistic people everyday and they are normal people. You need to open your eyes. To not know and be afraid is one thing, to not know and judge is another.
Im an autism savant, instead of lightening fast mental calculations, for me its lightening fast creativity. I am looking to meet others who are the same.
Would it be possible in this society we live in for someone to make it all the way to 50 years of age without getting diagnosed, or is it something where if you were home schooled and then never successfully entered the work force could easily be missed?
Absolutely. Nowadays, it would be much harder for a child to go undiagnosed, but Temple Grandin herself went undiagnosed/misdiagnosed for a relatively long time.
It wasn't really understood that milder forms of autism existed until around 10 years ago. There are still a lot of people and even doctors who don't understand that you can have a type of autism and still be able to talk and feed yourself.

I think that if I were to meet her, I wouldn't even notice that she's autistic. She really seems pretty "normal"(not exactly the best word) and extremely articulate to me.

She is fantastic!!! :D I can't even imagine what it is like living with autism.

MissMousy60 2 years ago 7
i am very similar, but i don't hate being with other people. i like it a lot more than i used to when i was younger. i am 19 now.
lbr218 2 years ago
Same here, except I'm still in my twenties. I prefer to "hang out" with animals than humans frankly.

I find the reclusive, introverted qualities of some autistic people attractive and somewhat intriguing. I would rather spend time with someone like that than someone who is social and prone to party.

I avoid situations where I'd be nervous. I rarely go to parties, bars, clubs, or concerts. I don't eat in restaurants either.

I will be praying for you!! What is wrong with you. They are humans just like you maybe you are the one with the difference and they are normal! I work with Autistic people everyday and they are normal people. You need to open your eyes. To not know and be afraid is one thing, to not know and judge is another.

Would it be possible in this society we live in for someone to make it all the way to 50 years of age without getting diagnosed, or is it something where if you were home schooled and then never successfully entered the work force could easily be missed?
Chompchompyerded 4 years ago
AngelMnemosyne 4 years ago
i was diagnosed with all the symptoms of high functioning classical autism on the age of 41.
