  • Let's see how well those blue rays play 100 years from now, sonny!

Where are those sites with the old speeches? I wonder if they have any by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain - Hero of Little Round Top and Governor of Maine back in the 1880s.

  • i think the speed of your phono doesn't correct with tthe record. try slower speed.

good record and thanks for inform us.

  • Nice early cylinder and machine. I have the Edison Gold Moulded black wax vocal version of this song.

  • Can you hear the horse galloping through the whole cylinder..lol

  • This just gives me goosebumps, what an amazing piece of technique. I love this!!!! I wish I owned a phonograph as well...

  • I would truly like to see you post your earliest brown wax cylinder and great vids!!

  • What an amazing world it must have been for someone born 1850-1870. Someone born in 1870 could hear this when new, then in the 50's ride in a jet plane! That generation saw more progress than any generation in history, including ours. They saw the beginning of everything we have now, but lived in a world the way it had been for centuries, too.

  • A true modern marvel that would later influence a vast line of more advanced predecessor's all the way up to the current information aged ipod's. Some ideas just have long roads ahead of them. I bet this machine sparked a lot of excitement back in the day when it first came out.

  • This is more interesting than an ipod. You actually have to physically work to play it.

  • Still sounds better then music of today !

  • i think i have an early black wax version of this song.

this pre-dates anything in my collection by a few years. great stuff...

  • LOL, c'mon guys -- it's a wax cylinder. Top of the line in it's day!

  • Try to download a different codec and uprade the driver it might help with the sound quality:) Very nice!

  • Very good, rare find.

  • Shame the mold got to this one, but the noise lessens as the recording goes on.

  • So awesome that I am very jealous!! Great video!

  • Thanks... :)

  • Thanks very much for posting. Pre 1900 cylinders are very fragile and each playing degrades the sound slightly. Recording it here will preserve the sound beyond the length of the cylinder's existence.

  • About the severe scratch, perhaps some cleaning job could help. I think its only dirt.

The sound is very good in the end.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Great piece, thanks for posting..

  • Very Bad sound,,, i got used to hear songs from blue ray disc,,,,

  • Well this is what you get with a 115 year old recording...

  • I could be wrong, but this didn't sound this bad 115 years ago, but things age.. simple, i found this very interesting.

  • WOW, thats the one of the oldest ( if not oldest) record/phonograph ive seen.

  • Wow that's old! from the NAPC days my oldest record was recorded in March 1900

  • wow love it what is the name of the song ? .

  • Kathleen Mavourneen

is an old civil war song

  • cool thanks .

  • Wow! That is truly amazing! There are a few websites online that stream rare speeches and the first "hit" musical recordings all before the turn of the last century but this is a real treat to be able to watch it. Even though I know some cylinders had age related damage to them and we take this into consideration, this is truly a historic treat!

    Thanks for posting it

  • Thank you...: )

  • I'm sorry you don't like the way this record sounds...

But if you new anything about North American Phonograph Co. You would know the historic value of 'any N.A.P. record' no mater what the quality...

Not many people get a chance to see or hear a record of this of this rarity.

This is definitely something to be appreciated.

  • I appreciate it. I recently acquired some brown wax cylinders in similar condition, and I am glad to have them.

  • Wow. I consider that a rude comment above this one. Thank you for posting this. It sounds awesome for it's age. You really can't afford to be too picky and snobby when it comes to 115 year old recordings. Sure, you may come across a very select few that have good sound, but how often does that happen in reality...for average collectors? Almost never! You are very lucky to even have cylinders that old that will actually play. Thanks again.

  • Of course I'm referring to tandolin's comment.

  • Is it supposed to be making that tapping sound in the song or is it the phonograph?

  • 1894???

    fucking hell thats amazing.

  • I recognize the tune as Kathleen Mavourneen. It was a very popular song in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Great recording for its age!

  • WOW... phonophilo

You solved the mystery of me oldest record. That had bin bothering me for a long time.

    I am amazed THANKS.... :)

  • Glad to help. I think I have this on a Concert Series Blue Amberol, complete with lyrics. I forget who the artist is. Maybe when I get a chance, I can make a youtube movie of it and post it.

  • sounds great! love the disentegrated quality-

all music should be left to rot and mold.

  • I am the current owner of NAPC very wonderful fine, don't do anything to this record, leave it like it is. You are playing it with an automatic, that is good, it won't harm the record. I have vids of the manufacture of the blanks for these records. I still make them.

  • you know i found a way to improve their sound! lol, and also a wy of permently preserving them, i tried it out on one and alot of the white vanished!

i cleaned it in windowx (window cleaner) and a dry cloth, then i just dipped it into cheap varnish, wiated a day(or so) and peeled the varnish off (this does not work with records!!) and it sounded wonderful! try it on a more'recent' cylinder and let me know!!

  • I don't blame you for keeping this moldy cylinder RTF. To find an N.A.P. record in any condition is worth keeping! They very rarely show up from what I understand. You've got a great part of phonograph history there. Congat's :)

  • It's a rare one ! Sounds in fact as some of my 78:rpms in bad condition !

    Thanks my friend !

    Peace !
