Simple solution: In order to activate the remote cam the admin has to enter a password that only the student knows. Students give passwords to admin if the cpu gets stolen.
The mistake on the school districts side was that the admin. who saw the pictures taken, confronted the student because she thought she saw Blake taking pills in the snapshots. Now because Blake's family owed Peco a lot of money, they took this turn of events (that with most other families, could have been handled much more civilized) and decided to sue the district. Now, my parents and friends must pay thousands of dollars (because the case is no longer class action) to this fucked up family.
i wish he had gotten all of hit facts before reporting on this. I go to Lower Merion high school and there is a lot of info. that was not addressed in this video, such as that the program that activates the cameras, is for lost or stolen computers. Because Blake Robbins (the kid who is sued the district) did not turn in his insurance money and a misunderstanding between the district and the student occurred, the laptop was thought to be lost, so the camera was activated.
"I got an idea, how about we pay hundreds of dollars to look at children when they're at home, instead of finding out if they're doing their homework the next day, anyone in?"
PLEASE PLEASE read this to understand the story better. I am a student in the Lower Merion School District and the webcam function was specifically used ONLY for tracking lost laptops. The lawsuit approached when a student who falsely reported their laptop missing had a picture of them taken by accident when the camera was turned on. Knowing he may be charged for attempting to steal the appliance he and his parents turned the tables on the school for taking a picture of him sleeping.
isnt hand in the homework proof u did it,durrrrr this shows the world that big brother is no good PERIOD!!!!!!! nothing they do should be accepted at all,i think every 1 should go and start tearing down the big brother cameras now before it gets super out of control, its pathetic u cant even pass through a red light at 3 am when there is no traffic on the street, its a process were in the end using common sense is banned.kill big brother before he tries to kill you.
In all fairness the checking on kids doing their homework claim is a myth, not to say it couldn't happen some day. But the story is disgusting and appalling even without that. The real head turner is that the school admin who brought this to light, did so by presenting a student with a photo taken from the laptop webcam showing him engaged in what she deemed inappropriate behavior...in his own home. She then denied that she would ever spy on a student and was appalled at the accusation. Yeah.
in argentina the same goverment is giving laptops to the school kids for them to take home and i believe they have camaras too. Should we be worried? XD
I'd just dual boot into another OS that didn't have the program installed. Still get to use the laptop and they can't spy on you if you're running an OS that doesn't have the program installed. Sure the fact that these programs are on there are bad enough that it warrants the lawsuit, but many people don't realize that it's just so easy to get around things like this.
I remember when this school decided to give laptops to their students. My school was going to do the exact same thing, but at the last minute decided to make a sign in/out system for when you took them home.

I read some more about this. Apparently, all the laptops had an anti-theft program installed, which allowed administrators to remotely turn on the camera and take pictures or video of whoever is holding the laptop. A pretty good idea when you are lending laptops to an entire school, and don't want them to get stolen. So where did it get wrong? Well, students noticed the cameras turning on very often. So some creepy admin was using the anti-theft feature to spy on the teens. Sick!
BIG BROTHER has been doing this for quite some time, not to mention keystroke loggers, remote admin control, Microphone functionality (Being able to Look AND Listen) Sort of like a SUB 7 Trojan. Also S.A.S.S Phone-Cellphone System with the SAME FUNCTIONALITY (Being able to remote control cellphone)

Wow those administrators are sort of idiotic.. It would be hilarious though if they were just solely looking to see if they were doing there homework..
Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any
This is what happens when you let corporations and our government break our spying laws - everyone thinks, I guess it's OK now.
I hope people go to jail. And, I'd like to see the telecom immunity act forced on us by Obama and the Democrats be struck down as illegal and unconstitutional.
If i was a parent to any of these kids ID BE FUCKING PISSED! That school went too too far. Kids not doing their homework? So what? LET THEM FAIL IF THEY DONT DO THEIR HOMEWORK, Thats punishment enough, Im just...........WOW!
Its ridiculous, give a 17 year old hormonal boy a free laptop, with internet, what do you think hes going to be doing? 100% no doubt in my mind some creepy fat pedo recorded some kid jackin it. The administrators and whoever approved this should be arrested.
WTF? The picture taking isn't necessary for finding stolen or missing laptops. I'm not a computer whiz or anything, but I'm pretty sure anything with a internet connection or signal of any sort can be traced with GPS. This technology has been around for years. They're just using that as an excuse because they fucked up. Big time.
I really hope the parents do something about this. I really hope some jail time is issued for whoever came up with this sick plan.
also i don't think they ever said they were checking to see if we were doing our homework. The kid was caught smoking weed because somehow the school got a picture of him doing it (whether they spied or not). That's why they called him down to the office for "inappropriate behavior at home". That's still bullshit though, it's none of their business what we do out of school. I think the school was wrong but not as wrong as most people think.
I go to the other high school in that district and they haven't actually proven it was true. One of the things I heard was it was a loner laptop because he broke his and he wasn't supposed to take it home so they considered it stolen. We knew that they could take pictures from it if it was stolen. Also that kid is kinda a tool and takes pictures of himself smoking weed all the time. They might have just found the picture on his computer. They do spy on us in school tho. We always see the light on
Wow, I think I have never agreed with Cenk more than during this clip. Every single word he said resonated with me there.
Oh and by the way: There is no way this could or would ever happen in a "Socialist" country in Europe. So think again, freedom loving Americans, your anger is directed in the wrong direction!
Is this what the americans are doing to their own kids.imagine what they do to the adults.only in america eh! is obama behind this?spying on kids. What a dumbass.
obviously the schools are flagrantly violating the fourth ammendment rights, and should all be brought up on federal charges of suppression of civil liberties.
check ifthere doing homework that is a joke cause what if they finished their homework b4 they turned it on or was busy and did ti directly afetr they stopped seeing if they were going to do it stil its all creepy and breaks privacy laws
i live around philly and from what i heard one kid was eating mike and ikes while on his computer and they thought he was taking pills so the assistant principle talked to him the next day with pictures of him eating the mike and ikes and thats when the shit hit the fan.
The computers are obviously school property, so the school can use a remote desktop application, commonly used in offices and schools already to ensure the computer are being used properly.
More commonly however, those applications are used to update computers and keep them running smoothly. Over a school year, computers can evolve, and administrators need a way to update a computers without hard access to them.
"From hunters and gatherers, to the agricultural revolution, to the industrial revolution - the pattern is clear. It is time for a new social system which reflects the understandings we have today."
This is so wrong and disturbing. This is going to far. Obviously their not gonna check them up if their doing their homework, they wanted to see MORE things than that. When i read the video, i would think their spying to conduct a study on average High School students but man am i wrong! Best to take your kids in private school or homeschool. Thats what i would do and i was homeschool during High School.
I live here in Philly ricgee, and yes your right about reason being stlen or lost, but the reasone hmework is also rght, they have no answer why them camera was on, so they said checkin student with bad grades if doin homework, Bullshit no reasond that camera shold be on in any case, this is fuckin sick and not gonna stand, they[most know who] are spying on ALL of us thru cell phone or at home thru digatal cable box, people wake up,fuck the patroit act, ill take my chanes wt te so alled terroist
Huge invasion of privacy, and if these kids and their parents didn't sign a clause allowing them to do so, these administrators should be thrown in jail.
I was home-schooled and I still find it disturbing. I'm not sympathetic though. They should have know something wasn't right when they were given a free laptop. Who in their right mind would buy that "we're just checking their homework" garbage. They don't have the right to demand students to do their homework anyway, they can choose to do nothing and fail if they wish. It was probably just some pedophile just waiting for some dumb teen to take her clothes off on a webcam chat. It's disgusting.
I don't know where he's getting his facts from. The school district used the remote webcam activation feature to track lost or stolen computers, not to make sure kids were doing their homework.
I wonder how many wee wees n pee pees these people looked at. It's really fairly obvious what the cams were used for. Eventually the evidence will spill forth like water flowing.
FINALLY!!! I can agree with what he says. If you don't make a big deal about it now, it will become normal...kinda like Gay rights. Hope its not too late.
As ridiculous as the situation is, it's a simple case of cause and effect gone amuck. Teachers and other curricular athority figures have abused their power and taken advantage of minors placed under their charge. They thought they could do this, get away with it and use "student protection" as an excuse. This by far, the most absurd thing I've ever heard it. This would like inviting pedophiles into your home. Hell nah!!
Kids at that school have a pass now to go mental on every teacher. I hope the school is burned to the ground, the teachers sent to rape camps etc etc.
This is not an option. This is like a pedo taking pictures of your children from outside their window. And everyone guilty should be punished EXACLY like that.
This is an absolute scandal, but it really is no surprise. There are cameras everywhere, even in toilet cubicles. The amount of CCTV footage I have seen on "funny video" sites, and even YouTube, taken from toilet cubicles...it's sickening.
You can't fart on the street without being recorded by something. These guys are creeps and with each new device they exploit to invade our privacy the more I believe in this One World Government and it's eventual realization.
sick, plus local is fine but over the internet is insecure i bet pedos was having a field day, how long until there 24/7 recordings get posted around the interwebs ,prob a pay per view website dedicated to this school already but yeah thinking back to my day the things i got upto in my room would make me ill to find out i was watched heh but yeah checking they doing there home work is a lame excuse theres no law that says you have to, what peeps do in there own house is there own business.
Last week, a Texas NBC affiliate reported that a Dell technician remotely turned on a woman's webcam via the Internet
without her permission.
The woman, Dianna Annunziato of North Richland Hills, originally called Dell Computer's customer support line after 9:30 pm because her new PC was having issues and was still under warranty. However, the online service call came to an abrupt halt.
"First, the technician started asking me what time of day it was," she told the Dallas-Forth Worth NBC affiliate. She then said that the technician activated the webcam a moment later—she could see herself peering back from a little box on the LCD monitor. She added that the technician did not ask for permission before activating the device.
Infuriated, Annunziato asked for a supervisor. Rather than receiving a sympathetic apology, she instead received laughter after explaining that she could have been sitting in her seat undressed when the device was activated. Shocked by the reaction, she decided to take matters to a higher level.
i go to this school district and people are really over playing this cause the green light goes on when you have photo booth or and thing else that can access the webcam and it never happened to me so, it really isnt as bad as people say
no they shouldnt, but that wasnt my point, it affected 1 of the highschool, there are 2, i go to the other one and my camera has never been turned on, and i dont use any programs that need it, inside the school they are alowed to see what is saved to your comp and every1 that has the laptops knows that cause there was a contract we all ahd to sign in the begining of the schoolyear. , oh and his pic got pulled up sometime in nov why is he sueing them 3 months later
I doubt wat ever contract u signed gave permission for them to watch you in private moments. What they are doin is straight up & down BULL SHIT! No matter how you look at it... Monitering you at school is different then what you do at home. And Im guessin they waited 3 months because they were building a case and geetting facts and EVERYthing in order... You cant just throw law suits out there like a toss up.... not GOOD ones anyway. I hope people go to jail over this shit too!
The news story I read about this was on CNET. The school said the reason for having the webcams was to help find lost or stolen laptops. IDK where Cenk got his information from. I'm not saying he's wrong, it's just that I wrote a paper on this the day before yesterday when the story came out.
Gullible? What did I say that makes you think that? I didn't say that I agreed with their excuse. All I said was the news report I read said one thing, and the one Cenk read said another. Stop jumping to conclusions.
theres one thing as watching the school cams and finding a kid doing something funny and saving it
its an entirely DIFFERENT thing when its at your house
im not a fan of the "if it was your kid" arguement, but... IF it was say your son or your daughter, and they decided to look at porn and masterbate, or throw a webcam show for their friends and a bunch of old guys were watching and recording it
wouldent you "AT LEAST" be upset? nah...youd rather be recording kids at home.
It is in the news today, an AP story, that the FBI is investigation this entire matter. The school says they only turned it on to find lost or stolen computers. They say that was 42 times! I do not know how this case is going to come out but that someone people should be fired be stupid seems to be clear. With that software build in I can not believe that someone with access is not going to turn it on to see and hear what is going on with those kids. Man this is crazy.
i dont see anything wrong they should put camera in theri closets, toilets, cups, microwave and better yet in the back of their heads this school is really thinking outside of the box
Are you zombie or an total idiot king of the rest of the idiots? How can a kid be a terrorist of a school, that has been already turned into more like a prison than a education center? You are crazy
It makes you think, if they attempted this at a school, imagine all the refurbish computers or a computers given as a gifts and rigged. In other words this type of thing can happen to anybody. A lot of pedophiles and perverts out there so make sure its a trust worthy place or person before purchasing or recieveing.
it isn't as bad as it sounds because the system could be used for good as well like checking if the high school students did their homework and if the school officials caught the students doing something immoral like having sex or masturbating in their bedroom the school could warn the parents so they could take appropriate action

Give a teen a laptop, presumably with internet, in their bedroom? Being undressed is the least those kids are probably doing.
TheCelticNinja 1 year ago 4
Its ridiculous, give a 17 year old hormonal boy a free laptop, with internet, what do you think hes going to be doing? 100% no doubt in my mind some creepy fat pedo recorded some kid jackin it. The administrators and whoever approved this should be arrested.
SpartanicalSystem 1 year ago 5
Yep. Watching these teens is not only a violation of their privacy rights, it's child porn.
TheGiantRobot 1 year ago 5
TeamTechProductions 1 year ago
also i don't think they ever said they were checking to see if we were doing our homework. The kid was caught smoking weed because somehow the school got a picture of him doing it (whether they spied or not). That's why they called him down to the office for "inappropriate behavior at home". That's still bullshit though, it's none of their business what we do out of school. I think the school was wrong but not as wrong as most people think.
cariboufudge 1 year ago
I go to the other high school in that district and they haven't actually proven it was true. One of the things I heard was it was a loner laptop because he broke his and he wasn't supposed to take it home so they considered it stolen. We knew that they could take pictures from it if it was stolen. Also that kid is kinda a tool and takes pictures of himself smoking weed all the time. They might have just found the picture on his computer. They do spy on us in school tho. We always see the light on

They are not meant to be spy cams.

This has been flagged as spam show
Last week, a Texas NBC affiliate reported that a Dell technician remotely turned on a woman's webcam via the Internet
without her permission.

Shocked by the reaction, she decided to take matters to a higher level.

moietmavieana 1 year ago
no they shouldnt, but that wasnt my point, it affected 1 of the highschool, there are 2, i go to the other one and my camera has never been turned on, and i dont use any programs that need it, inside the school they are alowed to see what is saved to your comp and every1 that has the laptops knows that cause there was a contract we all ahd to sign in the begining of the schoolyear. , oh and his pic got pulled up sometime in nov why is he sueing them 3 months later
jackthepole 1 year ago
I doubt wat ever contract u signed gave permission for them to watch you in private moments. What they are doin is straight up & down BULL SHIT! No matter how you look at it... Monitering you at school is different then what you do at home. And Im guessin they waited 3 months because they were building a case and geetting facts and EVERYthing in order... You cant just throw law suits out there like a toss up.... not GOOD ones anyway. I hope people go to jail over this shit too!

theres one thing as watching the school cams and finding a kid doing something funny and saving it
its an entirely DIFFERENT thing when its at your house
im not a fan of the "if it was your kid" arguement, but... IF it was say your son or your daughter, and they decided to look at porn and masterbate, or throw a webcam show for their friends and a bunch of old guys were watching and recording it
wouldent you "AT LEAST" be upset? nah...youd rather be recording kids at home.
cloudstrife0142002 1 year ago 2
It is in the news today, an AP story, that the FBI is investigation this entire matter. The school says they only turned it on to find lost or stolen computers. They say that was 42 times! I do not know how this case is going to come out but that someone people should be fired be stupid seems to be clear. With that software build in I can not believe that someone with access is not going to turn it on to see and hear what is going on with those kids. Man this is crazy.
