@iToasterman To back up our computers, we have a few computers that run our small business, we have important photos. We have all of our music and videos. It hosts several web sites and it makes everything easier. there are a couple reasons.
@samlaxrocks Ugh, your kinda going underkill then. I dont recoment crossing webhosting with backups as if the server is hacked, there goes privacy, and backups
I did my moms server set up for her business. Tho we have Fiber internet. so much better for using it as a website server. Tho the server there is a mac pro. I like working with macs and a gigabit switch helps, I have patching and back haul for the the whole set up.
@Sliffer21 I like to think that any computer whose function is to provide services for other computers is classified as a server. The hardware doesn't determine what is/is not a server. Now, using a desktop OS may not be the best of choices, but it gets the job done. According to Websters online dictionary:
serv·er
\ˈsər-vər\
noun
A computer in a network that is used to provide services (as access to files or shared peripherals or the routing of e-mail) to other computers in the network
you should run Linux headless (no keyboard, mouse or monitor on the server) on that setup. You can use Samba for file sharing. It will run leaner and faster than Win... Plus you'll have the extra monitor to use elsewhere.
i would never use a windows server for private file storange (NAS) i would always opt for Linux baised box like FreeNAS much more safer.

Can you explain why you have a massive switch, than you had to go through a linksys switch? What is the point of that?

What do you use your server for? Just a general storage device for people on your network or a website hoster?
