Hey davey i love watchin the repairs its even better than re runs of this old house ;0)
In your opinion what is the best material to shim a bone bridge on a classical? I usually use veneer but have been recently told to use brass or aluminium. This doesnt sound quite right to me. Cheers.
@lozarok Bridge/body warpage doesn't mean the guitar is "dead". It's just a huge PITA job and for 99% of guitars, it's not going to be economically feasible to pay someone else to do it, even if you find one of the small handful of luthiers willing/able to do it. Correcting a warped body is major undertaking involving heat, pressure, steam and time. If you're talking a Stradavarius violin or a super rare prewar Martin or a Torres classical, maybe, but for regular guitars, usually not worth it.
@davey4557 Do you know if there's a difference in tone between a belly up bridge and a belly down? I have a 1968 Gibson J-50 and mine was made with a belly down bridge. Before 68 they made them with the belly up bridge. My bridge has to be re-done either way so I'm wondering if I should leave it the way it was or switch to belly up. Ive heard some people say belly up sounds better but if its splitting hairs I'll just leave it so I dont see marks where its been reversed.
Have you ever worked with mirrors and lights to replace a shattered bridge backer inside the guitar?
I threw a crap Epiphine AJ-100 in the creek last week that needed that aforementioned repair. Tech at the shop wouldn't even let me trade that Epi straight-up for a pack of strings for my electric. I curse all acoustics now!
Hey i have an old Montana guitar. Its pretty bad, but i was just wondering, is there a way i could fix the area around the bridge? it has bent out because of the pressure of the strings after years of playing
Hey, any idea how much pressure you used on that glue up? Amount of turns on the clamps or how much back pressure as you tightened? Or was it the glue coming out all around the job? Did you use Elmers Yellow Wood Glue Brand? And any further prep on the two parts? Adhesive remover or just paper and what grit????
(1) The type of glue being used here definately will hold well....but.....the problem is, is that it will effect the tone. Normally a traditional animal hide glue is used on really expensive guitars because it dries hard and crisp (better tone).....where as the elmers type stays somewhat plyable and acts as a sound dampener.......BUT......
what sort of glue did u use , and how much did it cost??
did this keep it stuck or did the tension of the strings break it??

do you have a video for complete refinish of an acoustic guitar? I purchased an EKO ranger 6 guitar with checking on entire finish, body and neck.

for cheaper guitars Stew mac sells the JDL bridgedoctor.
I have not tried one but have been told it's an economical fix for guitars in a lower price range

It`s just time and money that get in the way :)

@Davesintexas
Heavy grit 80 grit and I score the bridge with a rasp
Clampimg pressure ?
as much as required to hold the bridge in place
I never CRANK the clamps
yes elmers yellow
some say hide glue
I've never had a problem, but it may effect tone due to softness of the glue?
davey4557 1 year ago
@davey4557 hey dude, what kind of glue would you recommend? just wood glue or something?

Ever use a Fox Bridge Clamp? It works better and makes more sense. Try it, and you won't go back.

what's the tape on the inside hole for?
acdc10133 1 year ago
@acdc10133
So that I don't bump the finish placing the clamps in and out the sound hole
you check the clamp arrangement many times before gluing
