What pissed me off is that you work your ass off in class/readings, spend hours and still are confused. Then you watch youtube videos made by very intelligent people (like him) and you understand a lot within one morning! When I did organic chemistry in 2005, I didn't have videos like this. I worked like hell to accomplish little because of all the superfluous details. I hope kids appreciate how far we have come. I am in graduate studies and I love to review these helpful concepts.
at 6:42, can i just draw the hidden hydrogen for example in another direction than the one u did, would it make any different or am always supposed to draw it this way if it was hidden ?...
Im Glad i live in a Time where Youtube Exists and i can learn More from great teacher like Freelance at my own pace, rather than my 50 min class With 72 students
thank you so much! Your tutorials are very extremely clear and relevant to the organic chemistry course material. I can't thank you enough! Please click like on his videos and make any small donations you can because this really is an amazing effort and time that's being put into creating these materials for us students.
You are a true God sent to me.Organic felt like a killer, but i 'm now killing it cos of your videos. watch out for my donation soon. I just recommended u to my fellow class mates too.<3
I just wanted to make an observation to a possible error....It is my understanding that wedges point towards the pages and dashes point away from the page. In the Fisher projections horizontal lines are wedges and vertical lines are dashes so in this video "F" is number 4 priority and it actually faces away from the page so the rule covered here does not apply. Please review and discuss whether my observations are correct.
Thank you SO much. My lecturer directed us to you after his third years rated you highly. Its a shame lecturers often dont have enough time (or the explanation skills!) to explain concepts as thoroughly as you do. I love how this video includes practice of other skills, like the IUPAC naming ... keep up what you are doing, its invaluable for students like me who find Chemistry like a slow painful death. After battling for years and only getting worse, I feel like there is hope again!
It's like the sky opened up and rays of sunshine broke through on my brain. I get it. Why oh why can't the PhD who I'm paying several hundred dollars to teach me explain it like this? Thank you Freelance dude. You are great!

I'm so glad he AGREES that visualizing a molecule is SO HARD. Thanks, most professors, for being so crappy for expecting that. THANKS FREELANCETEACH FOR BEING AMAZING.
You've probably heard this many times, but it is worth saying again. YOU explain this much better than my professor did. The step by step method may seem simplistic to some, but it helped me go from utter confusion/frustration, to understanding how to do this...THANK YOU SO MUCH.
These videos are great. I have had a lot of chemistry and none of my professors have ever explained this. He wants to make sure we are ready for every scenario that comes up...Maybe on the PCAT OR MCAT.
Great job. Everyone should send this guy a few bucks. We are all usually poor college students but I know we can find $5.00 to send. It all adds up. He does a great job. I sent some money. And since he has added additional videos. I am going to send him another $10. freelance teach is great.
Because the fluorine atom is bonded to the the second carbon on the longest chain of carbons. If the fluorine was bonded to the next carbon to the right, it would be 3-fluorobutane.
OOPS... On this molecule it would still be 2-fluorobutane because you number the carbons so that, in this case the fluorine atom, gets the lower number. In the video he numbered starting from the left because the F atom was closer to the left. In my example, you would start numbering from the right because the F atom would be closer to the right.

I am really sorry, but why the hydorgen atom will be attached to the chiral carbon by dashed line @ 6:45, why not wedged?
koreahiho 1 year ago
@koreahiho
The hydrogen has to be dashed so that the geometry of the chiral carbon with its groups are tetrahedral.

why is Fluorine the lowest priority?? Wouldnt that be Iodine?

Iodine has a higher atomic number 53 and fluorine has the lowest 9

these videos would be helpful if it didn't take 45 minutes to going through assigning priority in painful detail

The only thing im still not too sure about is that number after R or S...in this one its a 2 but how do i determine that?
stdnt85 3 years ago
Because the fluorine atom is bonded to the the second carbon on the longest chain of carbons. If the fluorine was bonded to the next carbon to the right, it would be 3-fluorobutane.
seth3481 3 years ago

GO over the IUPAC naming system of numbering.
