@SebbeSucksBawlz if you bought them fresh from a fishmonger, then yeah they should be alive. But a lot of commercial mussels (the sort which are vacuum sealed), have been frozen and thawed during transit, so those ones aren't alive
@carpii I realised at the last minute when they were going in that I didn't have any white wine, so they actually weren't as good as I was hoping lol.
I love mussels. I cook something really similar to this and it's fucking amazing. Don't forget to pour the sauce over the mussels though, and soak it up with crusty bread.
@steph2226 You can, but mussels (or mossels as we say in Dutch) are best when fresh. If you only get to taste the frozen ones your kind of missing how a mussel really tastes like.
LOL< Awesome! I love mussels too......YUM! You are entertaining too. You made me laugh with the bit about the sleeping mussels. Good tutorial, thank you!
I'd love to eat something like this but only seeing those mussels alive I just can't bring myself to kill them.. I wouldn't want to be cooked alive either...
@laganaerata Wanna try that again buddy? It's FAGOT one G one T that's all. Maybe you should have grabbed a dictionary or right clicked OVER the word to see if you spelled it correctly. You dumb FUCK!
@Joyl3ss A dry wine is important when steaming mussels. You don't need to use very expensive wine but don't use super cheap plonk either. You don't need to use much wine or you won't taste the mussel juices in the broth, which is perfect with some nice crusty bread.
My main concern is: how do you make sure than all of the tomatoes and onions and whatnot get INTO the mussels when he cooks them for only about 1 minute? Does the steam really carry the flavor that fast and deeply?
@IcyPhoenixOfMist depends on the heat, but if your liquid is steaming (probably over 170 180 F) it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. anything more is overkill.
If I was the muscle that was getting hammered while peacefully sleeping, I would have jumped out of my shell and whopped his ass :p nice recipe though.
this is such a awesome dish! Just tried it out for lunch today for first time. Can really taste a big difference in the broth when you use a good dry white wine that u like.

How is it with wines and cooking? i get that u go for a dry one but does a expensive wine give a better result than a semi good?
Joyl3ss 1 year ago
@Joyl3ss Nope. Price ain't got nothing to do with the quality of wine. Its a personal preference.

TheLoyalOfficer 1 year ago
@TheLoyalOfficer
no actually, you should let them cook for around 10 minutes... Mussels also take more than one minute to open up... ;-)
IcyPhoenixOfMist 1 year ago
@IcyPhoenixOfMist Oh - it does not seem that way in the video. Did I miss something?
TheLoyalOfficer 1 year ago
@TheLoyalOfficer
maybe he doesn't cook them that long; but you actually should... just to make sure... ;-)
and then btw, you maybe have to use a little bit more wine ... ;-)
those Mussels, which are still closed then, you have to throw away ;-)
IcyPhoenixOfMist 1 year ago
@IcyPhoenixOfMist I have to admit I do cook mine for a little longer than he does.
bigglego 1 year ago
@IcyPhoenixOfMist No way man, two to three minutes I say
bigglego 1 year ago
@bigglego
that wouldn't be enough, I'm afraid...
I got tought from a french guy, you should cook them for like 10 minutes, to be sure
and I asked a friend of mine two weeks ago, which is a professionnal cook, and he also said the same ;-)

I ate mussels with white wine sauce in a very small casserole.
