@MeingroessterFan i could tell you, but then i wouldn't find it highly amusing by the fact that this game came out over a decade ago and you never knew there was a god/deity. but the REAL loser (or should i say losers) are the ones who grab odin from the get go. got a problem with him coming out when you're trying to draw magic? then it's simple; don't get him then. by disc 4 you won't be needing to draw magic from enemies anyways. if you wanted, you could have the strongest spells in disc 1

And Gilgamesh, albeit quite useless in battle, is one of the most awesome characters in the series, and maybe the only one that ever appeared in more than one game. If you get him here, it's like you resurrect him. And that's more of a divine act than any mysterious god in FFVIII, whoever he is, could ever do.

@Luxai If you look closely, Seifer DIDN't DO ANYTHING. He just stands there, and Odin just rides into his gunblade. Now he maybe pushes the trigger, and BOOM! one useless god less. Even I could have done that. The only difference between Seifer and any other killed mob is, Seifer wasn't frozen in fear, like most human beings would be when a big evil-looking guy with an evil looking sword rides towards it. He reacted and didn't even needed to be strong, Odins horse did the whole work.
When I first played FF8 I was like "what the hell?" and thought I was in for along fight but...along came a guy from FFV came and made the battle easy btw Gilgamesh is the same as Odin,the only difference is...Gilgamesh uses Swords like Zantetsuken,Masamune,Excalibur(I think) and the worst weapon in FFV...Excalipoor

I don't know if it's true, but I heard on the Japanese version a "B" was placed on the end of Gilgamesh's line "Huh? Was it you...?" making it "Huh? Was it you, B...?" This was meant to help imply it was FFV's Gilgamesh, but the translators thought it was an error, and took it out.

@goglespit Gilgamesh has the ability to travel between parallel dimensions ie the different final fantasy titles/worlds. He has been in every single game from 2 onwards and is not a GF, eidolon, or summon but a person. He uses his power to seek out the legendary swords of each world t become a true master swordsman... And often obtains the cheap replicas by mistake.
i think i remember when i got odin and how he died like that i told my cousin odin got owned he said that supposed to happened and left when i saw gilgamesh i said "WTF?! is that a new summoned the hell is odin" when my cousin came back he said thats odin idiot xD sure brings back memories
I bought my copy of VIII used and on my second game (got stuck on first) I had a weird bug when I started out with Odin, maxed out money and time played as well as random inventory items. Deleted that save file and started a new one so when the Seifer/Odin fight happened I was scared the bug was back and about to mess up my game.
The Gilgamesh in FF8 is the Gilgamesh in FF5... The Zantetzuken created a rift in space and time. You can tell by the way he spoke about the void. In the side note, I can't believe Seifer's still standing after Gilgamesh attacked him...
Although Gilgamesh is one of my favorite characters in Final Fantasy, I don't think he would be the image or symbol of it. To be honest it is hard to choose a image to represent the entire series. But if I could choose, I would choose the bridge opening in Final Fantasy 1 (NES) or the crystal (FF1,3,4,or 5).
that's a bit interesting. Gilgamesh is supposed to have been stuck in the void from Exdeath from FF5, and yet in this universe Odin's sword somehow manages to cutr open the void and free Gilgamesh. I guess maybe Gilgamesh is the strongest summon out there (at least, that uses a sword) (and by "out there" meaning all the final fantasy universes....except sephiroth)
@hasher22 Most of the things that were vulnerable to Odin were also vulnerable to Death junctioned to Squall's status attack. Gilgamesh has a chance of doing some good to things that aren't going to die automatically.
The most bad ass part of this part is gilgamesh's hand being shown catching the blade casually, while he's up some where in the heavens. I have no idea how to describe how awesome that part is.
This is why you should wait until after this battle to get Odin. Gilgamesh is frustratingly useless in Final Fantasy 8. Zantetsuken is a much more welcomed random start to a battle.
@sweetascandy692002 The writing says Zantetsuken or "iron cutting sword" which is Odin's attack. The last one added means "reverse" because Odin got cut instead of his opponent.
I guess that Odin's sword opened the dimensional rift so that Gilgamesh could pass through, then again, he sure is funny like hell, just watch some scene in FFV or in FFXII
Just what is gilgamesh's story. Hopefully one day a game will be made where you play as him. He's probably serving some interdimensional master who he collects swords for.

That being said, I still love the big guy...I also love how they put a Sumerian god-king in the FF universe! (it even says in the Epic of Gilgamesh that no mortal could withstand his might. Though he was still killable, they couldn't even touch him, THAT'S what makes him great in my book.) The way his clothes make him look like royalty in a way is also pretty cool (though why he has diamond-shaped POLKA DOTS on his dang pants is beyond me o_O; )

The Void in FFV connects to all dimensions (The official translation is "Rift of Dimensions"), Gilgamesh is a Dimensional traveler now (It's the same Gilgamesh in FFV, FFVIII, FFIX, and FFXII). Yay for the ONLY character to be consistant across multiple universes!
Ahh, but the Summons (or Espers, or Eidolons, or whatever you feel like calling them) are all canonically different in each game (The FF1 Bahamut for example isn't the same guy as the FF3 Bahamut)
Gilgamesh is canonically the same Gilgamesh in each FF he appears in (FF5, FF8, FF9, FF12, and if you count remakes, FF1 and FF6)

In fact, I'd even say it was pure dumb luck on his part he was able to beat Odin. If anything, Gilgamesh threatened Odin to lose the fight so he could take over for him.

The most bad ass part of this part is gilgamesh's hand being shown catching the blade casually, while he's up some where in the heavens. I have no idea how to describe how awesome that part is.

This is why you should wait until after this battle to get Odin. Gilgamesh is frustratingly useless in Final Fantasy 8. Zantetsuken is a much more welcomed random start to a battle.

@sweetascandy692002 The writing says Zantetsuken or "iron cutting sword" which is Odin's attack. The last one added means "reverse" because Odin got cut instead of his opponent.

As far as the whole serving an interdimensional master...That may very well be true. He's always got some errand or other to run before you completely kick his ass, doesn't he? :P

That being said, I still love the big guy...I also love how they put a Sumerian god-king in the FF universe! (it even says in the Epic of Gilgamesh that no mortal could withstand his might. Though he was still killable, they couldn't even touch him, THAT'S what makes him great in my book.) The way his clothes make him look like royalty in a way is also pretty cool (though why he has diamond-shaped POLKA DOTS on his dang pants is beyond me o_O; )
The fact he's funny as hell is also a big plus XD

In case you are interested, the characters on 0:35, "Zantetsuken Kaeshi" (Zantetsuken = "Sword that cuts iron"), are Japanese and mean "Zantetsuken Reversal" or "Revenge on Zantetsuken".
That's pretty damn awesome.

The very first time I battle seifer, seeing Odin dying made me the same effect when Aerith died.
Then gilgamesh came, but c'mon Odin is WAY better and looks better !
Now when I play ff8 I don't take odin untill I beat seifer, so he dosen't die till the end of the game.

The Void in FFV connects to all dimensions (The official translation is "Rift of Dimensions"), Gilgamesh is a Dimensional traveler now (It's the same Gilgamesh in FFV, FFVIII, FFIX, and FFXII). Yay for the ONLY character to be consistant across multiple universes!

Ahh, but the Summons (or Espers, or Eidolons, or whatever you feel like calling them) are all canonically different in each game (The FF1 Bahamut for example isn't the same guy as the FF3 Bahamut)
Gilgamesh is canonically the same Gilgamesh in each FF he appears in (FF5, FF8, FF9, FF12, and if you count remakes, FF1 and FF6)

I wouldn't give Bad ass points to ANYONE who got pwned in one hit. Even by someone as awesome as Gilgamesh.
Plus, this would make it the 4th time Seifer got his head handed to him by the main characters. Theres persistence, and then theres not knowing when you've been beaten.
In fact, I'd even say it was pure dumb luck on his part he was able to beat Odin. If anything, Gilgamesh threatened Odin to lose the fight so he could take over for him.
