Thanks for posting. Clear Rortyan prose at its best. For those confused, Rorty is making one of his typical moves: He appeal to Wilfred Sellars argument about the "myth of the given" to undermine James' less cautious conclusions about supernaturalism. James' appeals to evidence immediately given in experience, Rorty spent his carreer brilliantly re-hashing the anti-empiricism of Sellars.

A good thing if that is the case, for myself at least. I haven't read much Sellars, but the few bits I have I found to be rather opaque, particularly his difficult terminology. I think there is much to the conversation that I need to catch up on before I can appreciate Sellars' work.

yeah, there's no way I would have ever understood either Davidson or Sellars if I hadn't read tons of Rorty first. Even at that, reading Sellars is all but impossible. Lets do some YouTube videos on Sellars sometime . . .

LOL you're welcome. Yes, I've watched and rewatched it many times. w.r.t. sellars, I keep putting off making a vid on him because I keep hoping that somebody who actually understands him will do it. I feel like I've gotten my arms around only about 5% of him.
