These type of basses (with the bottom section of the body cut away) have become quite common. As a bass player I've seen them around more and more. Apparently there's a guy in New York who started doing this. Their purpose? they're much lighter and easier to carry around while on tour, especially on airplanes. They're normally bastards towards bass players. I once had to pay over 1000 bucks to get my bass on board (more than the whole tour's wages) or else I'd have to leave it behind...
new york cab drivers stopped accepting passengers with ordinary size basses so a ny bass shop owner designed this one. it doesn't get much uglier. but have you tried touring with a double-bass?

Saw them playing in Bilbao. Very good but they played for only one hour and ten minutes. I ended a bit pissed off.
