Sir Charles (1877-1923), of the House of de Rothschild of England, established Woodwalton Fen, in Cambridgeshire, then Wicken and Barkers Fen in 1910, wholly owned by his Lordship. SPNR acquired the reserves in 1919 as the first of many gifts from the ailing trillionaire. These areas are now managed National Nature Reserves. In particular, Wicken Fen is one of the best remnants of the formerly abundant Heron habitat and gloriously harkens visitors back in time to the nature of Sir Charles' day.
