  • He is SO bad-ass~

  • omg I attached a pen to a necklace chain and did what he told you to do and it worked :D I made it go in circles then stop and then start again. And for the whole time I was sat on my bed!

  • wow, i am so... underwhelmed

  • wow he goes in a circle cos they moved forward , omg thats gay

  • hahaha i love ideometer tricks :p

  • audience aint stupid the watches are moving because they believe it can move and they don't mean to move there hand they just do it on there own because they believe it.

  • I was expecting he was going to show their ideomotor responses go into sync. Meh. It's not that hard of a "trick." It's Derren Brown, he can do so much better than this. >>

  • yeah, it's this thing called the ideomotor effect. anyone interested should seek out derren's book (tricks of the mind).

  • Works because if you visualise it happening your muscles move in accordance with the visualisation.

(Still scares the shit out of my little sister though.)

  • thats gravity lol?

  • it's just ideomotor movement

  • Same principle as how the quija board works, close your eyes listen to my voice. Cant remeber the name of the technique but it causes the person to unknowingly slightly move there hand.

  • @AnglOsAxOn2 ideomotor effect

  • They are moving it you can see them

  • clearly a lot of you are ignorant to the energies that run through our bodies, these are pendulums, these pick up energies in the body and move, it is not them moving it with their wrists.. look into these before coming on and giving your comments..

  • @MrsSarahc123 there is no "energy", you are subliminaly moving your wrist. Not even the holder is aware that he/she is doing it. Please look again and try not to act so gullible!

  • @MrsSarahc123

Clearly YOU are ignorant that Mr. Brown never pretends that he has any powers of any kind, or that anything that he does is supernatural. He achieves all of his results through a mixture of magic, suggestion, misdirection, psychology and showmanship. This particular tidbit is psychology.

  • @CoDGameZero you mean to say illusions, not magic right? because to claim magic as what he is doing, that would mean he is indeed pretending to have powers.

  • @seanmartvt09

    Ok, I'm sorry, "magic".

  • you see anyone can do that its basically your getting told what to do and you are moving it with your wrist but what i find fascinating that the public find it shocking in a am zing way why?? its so easy to understand whats going on

  • The Human mind is amazing.

  • People are idiots.

  • The people are quite obviously moving their hands '___'

  • hahah omg i love that guy on the far left his weight isnt moving at all :D

  • @AnneXBlobz

"t his weight isnt moving at all"

He's likely the only one with a properly functioning brain. C'mon, ... the swing won't move until you do it yourself! How can people be so gullible?

  • this one is called 'the ideomotor effect' in psychology

  • mine doesn't do anything. it stands slill like frozen.

  • To all those that don't get this trick, what's happening is because the people are thinking about moving the string, they are subconsciously doing it. You can even see it.

  • We did this at school. I thought it was common knowledge :P

  • Definitely using magnets.

  • I can see them moving their hands. Great ESP if you can make an item in your hand move by moving your hand.

  • lol wtf? It's obvious they're moving the shit

  • People who do not understand this trick, go buy Derren's book "Trick of the Mind". He explains everything in there.

  • damn internet.

now days ppl are learning more and more about topics that use to be sacrced and hidden.......i.e hypnosis

  • it's the power of suggestion, nothing more.

  • You can actually even try this at home, right now. Take a piece of string, put a weight at the end of it like a heavy ring or some keys, and focus all your mind on making it move in certain ways... left-right, forward-back, clockwise, counter-clockwise etc. while trying not to move a muscle. You may be absolutely positive that it's moving by itself and you're not doing anything, but get someone else to look at you and they'll tell you you're the one doing it. This is how Ouija boards work too.

  • Add to that the pressure of being on stage (most people don't regularly go on stage under blazing lights in front of cameras and thousands of people on a regular basis so this is a completely new experience for them; when you're not used to the stage, it's VERY unnerving) plus the very calm and authoritative voice of Derren giving them clear instructions on exactly what to do, and you've got a VERY suggestive audience. If you asked them, they didn't move a muscle. But take a look at their arms.

  • This has nothing to do with NLP. It's not even hypnosis. Derren explains this trick in his book Tricks of the Mind. fedokosmokrator is right: it's the Ideomotor effect. It's been repeatedly proven that you can perform movements subconsciously and even be absolutely certain that you are not doing anything - just the suggestion that it will happen will do it, hence why Derren just gets them to concentrate on the weight moving. Add to that the pressure of being on stage (cont)

  • this one is kids stuff no real it is i got this trick in a magic tricks set when i was like 10 when he tells them its going to start moving and they subconscious twich there figuers very slightly and the movement increses as it travels down the string.

  • Magnets offstage. Why use an iron nut? Why not a cork?

  • everyone can do it, its all in the mind. even though you do not know your doing it in your head your body is still moving slightly. N i no people have already said this but for those who ent seen it lol xx

  • what is the trick?

  • sry guys but no psychicness here, the person moves it themselves but without knowing it, this is an exercise to choose the most suggestible people to be hypnotized or used further into the show.

  • there arms arnt moving though

  • 1:08 the guy in the white shirt is moving his arm quite obviously, look at his elbow rather than the pendant.

  • You're right, he is moving his arm well loads!

  • Comment removed

  • @Houstnou no hes actualy selecting the ppl that are the most receptive to hypnosis (the ppl that are making the weight swing more are more likeley to ''fall under his spell'')

  • WATCH WHAT HE DOES AT THE START when he is explaining 'get one of these and line up' etc. he is swinging the weight in the motion, and also he swings his arm in the motion when he says 'in a line like this'. all contributes to the final effect! :)

  • srsly?

  • Yes, srsly.

  • your body takes over even tho u dont know ur making it swing ur hand moves and practicaly forces to string to move.

  • Pretty much all of Derren's stuff is NLP. He illicits what he wants them to do by making them feel something. By feeling this in themselves they fall into a trance state (mild hypnotism) Listen to his language carefully in everything he does and you'll see what I mean. Go do some research on NLP and compare to his work.

  • Actauly, only a small part of Derren's work is based on NLP or hypnotic language- he does use alot of great showmanship!

  • Comment removed

  • The power of suggestion, he is creating a subconscious tiny movement in te hand which is amplified by the momentum of the pendulum.

Thats unless they decide not to go with it, as you CANT do anything you dont want to.

  • ay? hes told some one to move something and they have> isnt that like me saying hold this pen and you do?

  • This works through a phenomonon called Ideomotor Movement. The spectators move the pendulas themselves without realising it. Derren then removes those whose pendula are swinging faster as these will be best suited for the table turning demonstration which follows. You can even tell the spectator not to move his hand as the process is entirely unconcious. Ideomotor movement is also the secret behind the Ouija Board.

  • this has to be the weakest one of Derren's, but at least he does good stuff now. The best thing about this is the audience's stupid faces

  • First: He's speaking really intensely to put pressure on them to start swinging it side-to-side themselves. They then do this without realising.

Second: Once they've built up enough momuntum he makes them step forward. The step forward is obviously going change the direction of how it's swinging. Hence, from side-to-side to a circular motion.

  • i did something similar to this once in psychology

but it involved making on a piece of paper 4 arrows as well as i remember .

and with your minds eye ( even if you turn the paper) if someone keeps telling you to point it to a certain arror or back to the centre you will without realising.

the mind is a wierd thing

  • yeh man... the reason derren does this is to see which members are more recpetive or whatever, most will swing on purpose to be on tv longer, he knows that

  • im being serious, it actaully worked when i did it! i didnt move my hand, i did exactly what derren said and it moved!....woah.

  • the 4th guy from the rights arm couldnt really be more obviously moving.

  • Notice the guy on the far left isn't swinging his lug nut. Guess he'd not as easily manipulated as the others :D

  • It didn't work. Wow isn't that surprising.

  • Omg it actually worked when I did it!

  • Saw something on this before, it has to do with when told to imagine it swinging back and forth, or moving in the circle, your mind subconsciously does it, and your fingers do the action without you noticing.

  • LOL i did it with a necklace and it worked xD

  • theres no magnets, its just people moving their hand slightly, people in the audience are stupid.

  • @RAZlaad yeah having fun is stupid. Having enjoyment in something is stupid.

  • omg! I just tried this with a yoyo and it worked! That is really weird!!!

  • derren browns writer came to our school and we did this, because you are thinking about the direction its moving, your hand starts to move also(: we did it with a polo tho xD

  • This works in the same way as the ouija board which I think is great fun.

  • so? does it make you feel bad that a shirt lifter is liked by people...haha

  • lol typical channel 4 even on youtube it has adverts lol

  • @PenheregBoys Download FireFox and Adblock.

  • @PenheregBoys they stop you from paying, beats bbc.

  • @PenheregBoys really? i dont have adverts lol :P

  • Lol, what's with the retard in the middle intentionally swinging his.

  • That was rubish!!! You could see them moving their hands!

  • The point is they don't realise they are moving their hands.

  • right ffs every1 go grab something like he uses a necklace or w,e is fine imagine it swinging make it swing ul do exact same

  • i dont get it... they were just moving their hands to get it to swing? is this only half the trick or something?

  • there is something at the top of your spinal chord that, when imagining something (which is essentially electrical signals darting about your brain) prevents these signals from your brain reaching your spinal chord and translating them into movement. With most of us, a little of that signal still creeps through, so they may or may not have been doing in intentionally, but if you try it yourself, with your eyes closed, and just imagine the swing, you will find that it really does happen.

  • Cool!

  • Its called 'idio motor response' caused by involuntary impulses reflecting what your thinking. And no it doesn't work when you think of lifting a car just by touching, there are physics involved.

  • urgh.... it is obvious what he is doing np point wasting comments he is an illusionist it is one of his tricks it isnt magic but all the smart asses out there dont ruin it for everyone else..

  • I know! seriously

"OMG LOL ITS FAKE!! ZOMFG LOL NOOBS! LOOK I HAS PROOF! :O XDDDDDDDD"

just the same as they do with Criss Angel. just chill out faggots

  • hehe the people thinking they were clever by trying not to swing it didn't get chosen

  • Then the fact that they were swinging slightly anyway makes Derren look even better

  • just by imagining that this weight is going to swing round or left to right and wanting it to happen the tiniest smallest movements in your arm will start to happen just as a result of thought and willingness but you actually "know" that you arent intended to swing these weights in your conscious mind and your conscious mind only but the sub conscious does what it likes, what you believe. i remember doing this trick at school it was in science about sub conscious thoughts and how they relate

  • this is the result of micro movments in muscles , if you imagine a movement like catching a ball , you actually do all the moves except there micro muscle movements that are very tiny and almost unoticed

  • i think its to test see which people were the most suggestible

  • Agreed!

  • yeah thats it.

  • OMg, on this one he's just ruined himself..

It's natural for ANYTHING to turn round after you step forward... even if it's turning let to right slightley, the fact the people so badly wanted this trick to work they ended up moving their weights side to side.. as they swing it.. it swings more. so as they step froward it's going to swing but because it's already swinging so muchh it stater turning round more obviously..

  • Whta the shit?

There was a fucking advert. Why?

  • eh?

  • I was there

  • not his best trick.

one of the ppl r moving their arm

1:10 second guy from the left!

  • is the step forward to make it swing more on its own?

  • he told them so they did he didn't say not swing it the crowd that was amazed are a bunch of dip shit i'm 14 and i knew not to give him what he wanted i would have just stayed there what a bunch of dumb asses my god

  • Some of his stuff is definitely set up, but he always has you going, even when it's real.

  • they fuckin swang them like...

  • rubbish

  • lol the guy in the corners didnt even budge

  • 1:10 the dude in the white shirt is quite clearly moving his hand... LOL

  • the trick is that the strings move on there own but it just their brains, what you imagine your brain will sometimes get your body to do. Thus 'imagine it swinging.' What happens... oh it starts to swing!

  • this doesnt show the end of the clip im pretty sure they start to go into a sub-conciess state

  • wtf was that about????? here, i can pick up a my necklace and swing it around with my eyes closed!! so the hell what? :/

he told them to swing it around, and they did!

this is not even an illusion, not even suggestion, not even magic, not even deception, it's nothing and i really don't get what he wanted to achieve!

  • This is exactly what he wanted you to think.

You have been tricked I'm afraid.

  • lol this was lame, most people know this "trick" well its not even a trick haha

  • I've seen Enigma in Oxford, it was bloody phenomenal!

Derren Brown: the pinnacle of imagination!

  • He picks the most suggestible person, easy to tell whp they are, as they do exactly as he says.

  • they started to circle because they walked forward..

  • thats easy lol i can move any hagning object in any way i want it to

  • lol ahahahahahahahahahahaha. 1:52, reminds me of a certain mouth position! :)

  • stupid trick.... theres a pliller system that the hands twitchyness automatically makes when holding a certain precise weight, i done it in science :D

  • the guy on the far left = fail

  • LOL

  • Lmao

  • Not fail. It means that he has strong willpower and can control his mind. The other people are more gullibe and have less self control

  • he was proving that your subconcious mind can basically force your hand to move because you're being so enthusiastic so to say.

well thats my opinion may not be right but its a damn good guess =)

  • ermmmm, each and every one of those people consciously and deliberately started spinning the string!! this is the lamest "trick" ever...

  • What did he do!?

Bunch of people waving string around

  • This is not that impressive.

If i tell you that you shouldnt be aware that youre breathing right now, you will be aware.

Most people are gullible and sheeplike.

  • This is a form of hypnotic suggestability test and this is exactly the purpose for which Derren is using it. The suggestable people subconciously move there hand.

  • i didnt get it--- what was supposed to happen?

  • i agree what the fuck did he do.

  • i agree, this was utterly stupid and ridiculous! ooh, they're spinnin strings in a circle! WELL DUUUUUH, CAUSE HE TOLD THEM TO!!

  • at 0:07 the man in the grey and the man in the white top and jeans, r jst swaying their hands lol

  • So... who is never buying Nissan now?

  • very clever ideomotor movement trick .

  • fuckin shit!

  • wat a bunch of gullible twats! look at the crowd . these people would believe anything!

  • Its called the ideomotor movement- when your mind uncontroled activates your muscles, making every tiny movements. everyone can do it.

  • suggestion....nlp...

  • not really amazing .... hes controlling them they think they are doing it with their mind but they are actually moving their hands to do it subconsciously

  • i watched the entire show, they showed it on channel 4 one night. This part of the show he's only trying to figure out who is the most suggestable and gullible. The people whose chains didn't move at all, he just told them to sit back down because he knew they weren't going to be easily controlled. The people whose chains were moving, he used them for further tricks later.

  • did any of you notice that the person on the far left in the line his chain hasnt moved or is slightly moving i dunno whats goin on but somethins up

  • It's because he's less susceptible to those sorts of ideas than the rest of them. Derren told the ones who's chains were swinging the most to step forward because they are most open to those ideas and concepts and were subconsciously moving the chains of their own accord. If you watch closely, you can see their hands moving from side to side, ever so slightly. :P The principle is that they start the exercise thinking the weight will move(they make it), and it does.

  • question: "sir please stand forward." how do you know its you, if your eyes are closed?

  • He's close to you and says either he snaps or pushes you. The woman is the only woman so she knows he means her and he doesn't have to put his hand towards her as he does with the others.

  • i tried to watch the whole thing on youtube, it says not available in your country,

what the fuck, isnt this made in my country

  • its easy to do this WITHOUT any of that psychic

  • BULL SHIT!!!

  • I have the same frizbee!

  • done this to myself, not hard

  • You can easily do this at home.

Even though you SWEAR you're not moving your hand in any way, but still focusing on lettting it go back and forth - it will go back and forth.

Your arm makes small movements without you noticing it.

  • i saw his new show "enigma" the other day, thursday to be precise. it was SO good im not gonna reveal anything he did coz that would be unfair for derren and the theatre people. but it was good i highly recomend going.

  • I'm going tomorrow.

    I cant wait!!

I am so excited and scared at the same time lol.

  • OMG it's amazing!!! Did you enjoy it?!

  • The guy on the far left... His just isn't moving... XD

  • Yeah and after this when the four people are pushing the table he keeps saying "you aren't pushing the table, you're not putting any pressure on the table are you?" which is suggestive and also, i don't know if he slipped up after it or did it purposefully but when they finished pushing the table he says "i need a cloth to wipe of the sweaty hand marks" but if they weren't pushing it then there wouldn't be any hand marks. The rest of this show that had me amazed :)

  • we did this at school with a piece of string and a polo it works for anyone you just move your hand without noticing. You dont need derren brown shouting at you :-) xx

  • ive got this on dvd i might upload it not sure

  • Ah thats easy, hes suggesting people to move it, and he picks the most suggestable

  • ah going to see him at the adelphi soon yay

  • wow this is hard... ( look at the guy on the far left )

  • this is just not fair....i wanna se the show toooooo :( !!

  • This is a great idea, this isn't really something you'd normally put on stage, its a set up for the table tipping afterwards, its a great way of testing people for there susceptibility, which means the table tipping will be more spectacular afterwards.

  • It is a simple case of suggestion. I remember watching his Ouiji board thing on tele, and doing it with my mum and friend. The glass did indeed move, but because he had pre-ordained we would all be thinking of the same name, all of us were sub conciously pushing the glass in that direction.

Some people are more suceptable to this. I also watching the whole of this program, the people who do not step foward are asked to go and sit down because his next trick wouldn't work with them.

  • no my friend, no.

  • this is bait man he is telling to move it with ur mind but ur sub concious is telling ur hand to do wot he is saying making it move in how he wants it

  • Yep, ideomotor effect

  • Yup, he is doing it to test their susceptibility to see who he is going to choose for the table tipping afterwards.

  • i tried this on myself, and it works. it's that simple!

seriously get yourself a pendulum-type thing (i used a bath plug on a chain :p) and try and hold your hand dead still. imagine clockwise, jsut imagine it, and it'll spin! then anti-clockwise and voila, it works. it's obviously about tiny subconscious movements in the hand or someat

  • lol i did this with my necklace freaky stuff

  • lol yeah watching that guy on the frthest left i was pissing myself it didn't move atall
