Correct. It's not the date of TAPING that mattered, it was the date the show was going to AIR. Which was always on the opening slate.
(One side note/exception. When the three networks started to air the Watergate hearings during the daytime hours -- it wreaked havoc with the daytime programming for the duration. I recall that Gene started saying "We'll see you NEXT TIME", instead of 'tomorrow' or 'Monday', because they DIDN'T KNOW how many eps they would be airing in any given week.)
This is The California Bug speaking for Mr. Match Game: A YouTube Production! Stay tuned for Password, next (over most of the Microsoft stations). I'm sorry, but I had to do a Johnny Olson!
On Monday December 31, 1973 (11 Years to that day "The MATCH GamE" debuted on NBC-TV) "The Star-Studded Big Money MATCH GAME 73" is canceled on CBS-TV and the Debut of "The Star-Studded Big Money MATCH GAME 74" on Wednesday January 2, 1974 on CBS-TV.
I could be wrong, but I think it had to do with diminishing airtime. CBS had increased "The Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" to an hour each, and they'd started showing reruns of "All in the Family" and later "One Day at a Time" in the late afternoons, and they simply didn't have the airtime.
But ONe Day At A Time didn't air till 75 if I'm not mistaken.
And Also most of the soaps were still on ly a half hour or 45 minutes until the late 70s...correct me if I'm wrong please...*more familiar with ABC daytime lineup but I thought CBS was similar.
Actually, the "Star-Studded Big Money MATCH GAME" just changed its name each New Year's: '73 to '74, '74 to '75, '75 to '76, '76 to '77, '77 to '78 and '78 to '79.
CBS did cancel MATCH GAME in 1979, but the show moved to syndication and ran for three more years.
That was sad when Match Game went downhill from there. I place this show in my all time top ten TV shows of all time. Fugitive, MASH, Match Game, Adventures of Superman, ER, CSI, Three's Company, Happy Days, Batman, Smallville
There will be no Match Game 2012 or Match Game 2013.
They are all dead now.
May they all rest in peace.

It's just too bad that GSN has to interrupt these celebrations today with their damn self-serving ads!

They were actually still taping Match Game '74 in 1973. It should have still been called MG '73, to clear up the confusion.
travis7310 3 years ago
No, shows are taped ahead of time. People in the audience were told that it is being taped ahead of time. How was that confusing.
mrmatchgame 3 years ago
Well i didn't know that.. But, I really meant for the people at home. it would be confusing for them.

I don't remember any of the specifics but I do remember seeing the name-change episode. If I remember right it aired at 2:30pm on NBC in Seattle.

I used to love the sign changes as a kid. Little did I know the panel had started celebrating new year's early.
If only we could "stay tuned for Secret Storm" -- it would be great to see some episodes from the show's final days.

Yeah, I beieve it was canceled in '74, so probably not long after this "Match Game" clip aired.

For the reruns on GSN do they keep the promo for the show that originally aired after that match game episode?
