Mahjong and Shogi are entirely different. I know a Shogi tile when I see one. But I have no real idea about Mahjong, other than that it's a popular gambling game, and the rules seem to be confusing as heck.

Those are Shogi pieces. Shogi is sort of like the Japanese equivalent of Chess, they have different rules, but the same general goal with killing the enemy's King.
