@rockyrack3 Thanks, forgot about Drexler! But you're absolutely right about that summer. Don't forget, Jordan "retired" then too and the NBA changed. Too bad really, all of it.
@Daken3687 Absolutely was. Other than MJ and maybe Mitch Richmond, was the top SG in the league and would have been throughout the 90's. Great scorer (old-school mid-range game) but not a top defender. Too bad not enough of his games are online, but there are a handful out there.
@Daken3687 No problem. It's sad on many levels that Reggie left us too soon, he was spectacular to watch. He had a smooth jumper that was always in control. I remember him scoring in bunches and one game at MSG scored 25 first quarter points in 1993 I believe. Can't recall what he wound up with but he was a solid player. Great guy too in the community.
Lots of good and true comments about Reggie. I wanted to add my comment about his jump shot. I am an NU grad and a Celtics lover. I bought season tickets in 1984 and 1985 just to see Reggie play. I don't remember seeing his shot hit the rim! All I rememeber is swish. I have seen a lot of great shooters In the NBA. No one has had a sweeter jump shot than Reggie's, Legend Larry and Ray Allen included. Reggie's personality was as good as his shot.
I truly believe the Celtics would have 3 or 4 more championships if Bias and Lewis hadn't died. I still pray for Reggie's family to this day that God gives them strength!
I truly believe the Celtics would 3 or 4 more championships if Bias and Lewis hadn't died. I still pray for Reggie's family to this day that God gives them strength!
@elgriego331 it would have been great to see the lewis and bias playing together, Red Aurerbach knew how to recruit players, maybe the celts would have been still contender and oppose the scottie pippen and michael jordan.
It was clear something was very wrong... He should a had a ICD put in right away .. He was even pointing at his chest at his heart because he felt the arrhythmia before his collapse... cardiomyopathies are very dangerous and his treatment should a been more aggressive...
@kdj997 i thought it at first too. Especially since the bilas tragedy. But apparently, when they tested his heart, there were absolutely no signs of any drug usage whatsoever. His enlarged heart is what caused it. It is somewhat common amongst nba players, and his condition wasnt diagnosed until the Charlotte game. I love Reggie, and I still miss him.
I don't want to overshadow the death of Reggie Lewis may he rest in peace.
But I thank you for posting this because of the great reporting and story telling ESPN used to do. This is an amazing biographical report from the anchoring, to reporting, commentary, and interviews.
If a tragedy happened like this today it would be Tom Rinaldi trying to get a few tears from the viewers followed up by the Coors Light Cold Hard 6 Pack Questions of the day.
Just reading about the situation in depth I have to think it was cocaine. I wouldn't be shocked if he was high on coke during the Hornet playoff game when he collapsed. That's what the evident lead to because you don't get that kind of heart damage at his.age naturally medical science backs that. He admitted to doctors he used cocaine in the past 16 days b3fore he died and others came forward too saying he used cocaine. Derrick Lewis an ex college teammates said he did coke 5 days before he died
@kdj997 He didn't use coke, man, Knock it off. The doctors said back then and several times since in stories dredged up over the years that the scarring of his heart was not consistent with cocaine usage. But the quack doctors who said he could play again should have been sued. The man's heart was severely damaged and he was on borrowed time. If you pass out like that, you shouldn't even be allowed to play at that level anymore.
That's not true, it was very consistent with damage from cocaine use and he finally admitted he used cocaine in the past shortly before he died. Now would he have been dumb enough to keep doing it, who knows. Now if he had a heart condition and it was a coincidence he did coke (everyone basically did in the 80's) that's possible. Not likely though cause the doctors did originally think it was abnormal to naturally happen but he denied using coke.so what could they do.
@kdj997 i lived in boston at the time and i am a major celts fan but reggie did use cocaine. he likely already had an enlarged heart but he drugs sped things up! u can always find a doc to say anything just like u can find a lawyer to take any case. reggie chose to go doctor shopping. reggie should have called it quits but he's a grown man and made his own call. may he rest in peace!
Especially after Len Bias. That's why so people found it so hard to believe he or anyone else on that team would mess with that junk. Again, especially Reggie, he was a major part of the healing from the Len Bias tragedy and it would've been insane for him to make the same mistake. But in the words of Rick James, cocaine is a helluva drug... Funny thing is Rick knew that, been thru hell with coke and with med problems still did coke the day he died.

wow what memories!, i MET REGGIE lewis , 1 week exactly before his death!, i was a 13yr old outside my drive way playing ball wearing his jersey!, lived down the st from his Needham home. pulled up and said *hey kid , nice jersey*, played ball with him and my boys , went and left. ONE week later he passed. wow..cant believe its been 17 years now. R.I.P. R.L !. WHAT A HUMBLE NBA STAR!.
looking at all this clip, he kinda reminds me of kevin Durant. Same type of body and length, versatility and athletitiscm...oh yeah, and also wears no. 35 ;)
1993 in sports had alot of highs like the bulls 3 peat but a hell of alot of lows alot of death Reggie,Drazen, those baseballs players,, a golfer, the race car drivers that college kid, an nfl player, arthur ashe from the beginning of that year right to the end, I watched that playoff game and thought right away it didnt look right how Reggie just feel, sad all around and geez Boston again first Bias then Lewis
What has always bothered me is the fact that doctors said he shouldn't play after finding out he had heart problems, and he did anyway. Would he still be alive if he listened to them????? Anyway rest in peace, Reg.
Thank you Reggie for the memories that were sadly so very few. So much promise and cut short; my your children one day look back at videos like these and feel pride.
This is kind of scary watching him hold his chest while on the bench because I'm only 23 years old and for the last 2 years I have been having pains on the left side of my chest with difficulty breathing. I don't know if I am having panic attacks or a serious condition.
1. It's a shame that he was not on a championship team because he truly was one of the top 10 Celtics of all-time.
2. Pippen was chosen on the dream team over RL. That never should have happened. RL lost a popularity contest, but I was convinced that RL was the better player.
Well Pip and Barkley were the guys that played the best on the dream team.Dominique could also have played.Isiah, KJ and Dream (I know, he wasn't a US citizen back then but talentwise DAMN!)All these are debatable but to me one thing is for certain. They shoulda taken Shaq instead of Laettner.I remember saying that as a 15 year old kid, my age in 92, cuz if Ewing and Robinson got into foul trouble it would be great to have Shaq.Besides the Dream Team was loaded with forwards.U agree with me?
cuttino mobley did a very smart thing by retiring!!!!! although he had the potential to play a few more years, he thought about his life, health, wife and kids!!!! you can't put a price on that!!!!!
life is measured by how long you lived, but measured by the positive impact you leave behind. Reggie makes me want to be a better man in life. Good to people around me, friends, families, and people of the world
Thanks for posting this. It brings back many sad memories. I got goose bumps watching this, as it brought me back to that day in 1993 I was sitting in my living room and the news interrupted programming to inform Boston that Reggie had passed away. Like many, I was in disbelief and remember having tears in my eyes watching the tributes in the days that followed. 27 years young: what a tragedy. He was a terrific player who was humble as well. He may be gone, but Reggie will never be forgotten.
Man, Reggie would have been one of the all time Boston greats.
RIP!
