Heel to toe, a rolling action=roll your bass, thats the back bone to playing NOFX and alot of punk, thats playing a double bass withouth a double. Straight sixteenths without a double, clean for like maybe 8 measures, at a fast tempo, don't now if thats possible, so you use the double.

If you listen closely to the fast parts with the 'double-bass' from the album, Erik, NOFX's drummer, is hitting the hi-hats at HALF the speed of the snare hit. good vid, but FAIL for listening. and screw double pedals.
p.s. Nofx's drummer is one of the only drummers i've heard do this HALF time measure for the hi-hats.

@ggggggggwar You guys are both wrong. Smelly does upbeats on the snare and his hi hat pattern is unique to him. He does THREE hits on the hats. one and...and three and...and one and...and three and. Listen closely. It's how he plays so effortlessly, it's just three hits. Derrick Plourde from Lagwagon was the one who played hi hat upbeats with the snare. Dave Raun of the newer Lagwagon does a modified three hit version of the beat. His swings a lot more, it's more like triplets.

Seconded - I'm a punk/black metal drummer. I'll rip out the double only on metal, punk is best played authentically, one foot. Not hating but you should really get into heel toe with one foot. It's nice. I learned heel toe for black metal but it works for anything.

@lilpugh1986 You can really say that about anything though. Like I'm a drummer too. I can say why can't you learn to play actual good music and something that takes a lot of skill, such as Rush. Or being able to play polyrhythms during a solo. There's plenty of reasons to complain. Doesn't mean you should.

@FishermansDick I totally agree with you, I've always hated people saying "you're not real bcos you use double pedal" but I've to admit that doublepedal sounds differently, I used to play bass in a punkband and our drummer (Cib) tried few times to replace speed thru doublepedal, but the effect was too noisy firstly and secondly you easily can hear the difference cos it's like a machine...if you use just one pedal the second and third hits are sensibly lower than first...

I agree with benwats93. Good double bass playing, but those really should be double strokes with one foot. That's how Sandin does it...which is completely mental.
Let me clarify, the reason I said not to use the double bass is because once you do that, you lose all hope of getting a nice sound on the high-hat, and in this case on the decline, the hi-hat needs to be a lot tighter than it is on this video; way too trashy. However saying that, the performance is overall very good and mostly in-time which is credible for an 18 minute performance! Dynamics is possibly the only main flaw.
i'm pretty sure sandin uses a single pedal only. he once said that only "pussy metal drummers" use double bass. i could be wrong or he could have changed his mind, but he definitely said that when nofx's website originally went up...

@FishermansDick I totally agree with you, I've always hated people saying "you're not real bcos you use double pedal" but I've to admit that doublepedal sounds differently, I used to play bass in a punkband and our drummer (Cib) tried few times to replace speed thru doublepedal, but the effect was too noisy firstly and secondly you easily can hear the difference cos it's like a machine...if you use just one pedal the second and third hits are sensibly lower than first...

no it isnt....watch his legs both are moving, he is using a double pedal without a doubt!, the only talent in punk drumming is doing the kick part with one foot, he cant even keep the timing correct on the top, my cover knocks 10 shades of shit out of this,
im not saying this guy is a bad drummer, but he is no good at punk at all!

@punkrockdrummer1990 I'm sorry but, if you have ever watched live versions of this song, you would've seen that the master himself play it double bass. So, I know that there's 20 people that think you're right but they're all wrong. Anyway, I understand it's harder to play it single bass, but you should stop being jalous and give credit to this young guy here who's doing an awesome job playing it and adding fancy stuff.

I agree with benwats93. Good double bass playing, but those really should be double strokes with one foot. That's how Sandin does it...which is completely mental.

Let me clarify, the reason I said not to use the double bass is because once you do that, you lose all hope of getting a nice sound on the high-hat, and in this case on the decline, the hi-hat needs to be a lot tighter than it is on this video; way too trashy. However saying that, the performance is overall very good and mostly in-time which is credible for an 18 minute performance! Dynamics is possibly the only main flaw.

i'm pretty sure sandin uses a single pedal only. he once said that only "pussy metal drummers" use double bass. i could be wrong or he could have changed his mind, but he definitely said that when nofx's website originally went up...
