  • How do you get hired on as a train operator?

  • AS far as speeds are concerned D.C. has BART beat. Above ground the trains do 90. They no longer allow passengers to see the readouts (I saw it in the mid 80's). Here in NY the trains are limited to 50 because the tracks will not allow faster speeds and most stations are too close together to allow the acceleration and safe braking, but they are working on that with unit welding all of the tracks and replacing the signal system for faster service.

  • That's the yellow line!!! :D I go on yellow line every mornIng starting at north cconcord to orinda and back!

  • Lol can't you get fired for this?

  • @itberuuuubert Laugh out loud you cannot get fired for this!

  • I got to ride in front once. Well behind the operator.

  • I'd last a day doing that job at most.

  • I have a question about how to use BART.

    Here's the question:

If I want to transfer to another train, do I have to pay AGAIN?

  • @TaffyAlpha nope, as long as you don't exit the station (i.e. go past the gates), you don't have to pay again. Your ticket (which kinda acts like a prepaid card), isn't charged until you leave the station. BART has posters by the machines that indicate how much it costs to go from one place to another. In most cases, this is around $10.

In short, you don't have to pay extra to transfer between lines.

  • there was a time when this rapid transit system was STATE OF THE ART! sadly they didn't put enough effort into replacing their old aging rolling stock fleet.

  • Nice video.

  • How many people get to enjoy this view without being a BART operator? Thanks to you, everyone! Cool....

  • fuck BART.

WMATA all day, we're only a half a mile bigger but have twice as many stations

  • How many train yards does bart have?

  • @4squier4 4 Concord, Hayward, Richmond and Daly City

  • any idea when we might get bewer fster trains ???

  • I HAD FUN ON BART TODAY RODE OUT TO THE AIRPORT MY FAVORITE PAST TIME KINDA OUT GREW IT THO STILL LOVE IT HOPE I CAN RIDE IN NEXT LIFE TIME I WILL HAD DREAMS OF IT SPIRIT REALMS I MISSED IT AFTER LEAVING THE BAY AREA 7512/EXTREME PROMOTIONS 5-30-2010

  • Were you driving the train?

  • Wow, I never realized the tracks in Concord are so pretty.

  • I don't know how you got this video but if you work for BART or something and get the chance to do this again, HQ uploads would be great!

  • 70 MPH not bad for a rapid transit.

  • This section of BART runs along the old Sacramento Northern railroad right-of-way (built 1914-15) ...until a few years ago you could see the grading and concrete abutments where the railroad ran near the Concord station, and even a short section of track at the station itself complete with rails and wooden ties.

  • So is bart automatic with someone like yourself observing?

  • Nice vids

our subway trains half the front is for the driver the other half public and i always sit at the front and film

    they are mostly

    Bombardier and Hawker trains

  • By any chance, the TTC?

I work for them as a subway driver.

  • Yea im talking about them

  • the bart train is awsome i have been in it before!!!

  • This has got to be one of the most interesting jobs out there.

  • Awesome! I hope that the operator didn't lose their job for shooting this video. BART operator cabins are separated by some pretty dark window tint, so this is clearly an inside job. Thank you so much.

  • Back in the day (early 1980s) there was a clear window between the passenger compartment and the driver's cab, so you could get a view like this just by standing in the front of the train. Pretty fun back when I was little - this brings back memories.

  • You know, close to the same thing is happening with MUNI (San Francisco) today!

  • what are the red numbers?

  • max speed for that area i think

  • Very nice! Speed 67M/h = 108Km/h. Excellent!

  • I fell asleep on a BART train leaving Concord. I went throught downtown Oakland under the bay and ended up in San Francisco. I was mad.

  • When I was a kid I wanted to drive the a bart train.

  • hahaha I still do XD (at least before I die I guess)

  • muni metro is automated only when thy go underground

  • Very cool video! Thanks for posting!

  • oh so your really not controlling the cockpit?

  • is bart automated?

  • Yes. Bart was one of the first fully automated systems when it opened in 1972.

  • tat is fast compare to nyc subway

  • It's an enhanced speed"Commuter-subway" train simliar to what asian countries have.

  • :3

    I ride BART a lot.

I ride past that place every time. x3

  • I would move to San Francisco and take a ride on the BART. I would tell myself, "PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE!"

  • XD

I want to live in SFO too... xD Mmm, salty smell of seawater... And going to the ocean every day... x3

  • I wonder why you guys always need to sound yer horn whenever entering a station..

  • Hello... to wake people up who may be off in space. It's a safety signal old as railroading itself.

  • So How Many Cars are You Driving there?

  • Pause at 1:55, you will notice that there is a dial on the control panel that says train length. although it's a bit blurry, it looks like it's set to 10.

  • I likr the Concord Yard Better. Then The Hayward Yard. Well Did you Heard about the Hayward Yard? The Hayward was Mess up. And All of the Trains To Fremont are Slow Due to that Danmge Over there.

  • COOL!! Now I know what it's like when my husband operates the Bart train. Nice camera work!

  • I wish they'd do a documentary on BART they could put it on the histor channel.

  • @thepostfk PBS used to have a documentary series a decade ago called "Big City Metro". Each episode profiled one city's subway system.

  • @thepostfk But the crap that is on history channel today is about all sorts of crap like did Jesus marry Mary Magdalene, how did that universe form? and all sorts of other crap. I just wish it could just be documentaries like the history of Disney, railroading, or any of that sort. That's right, get a life history channel! :p

  • Nice run between Concord and Pleasant Hill. When I was a kid in the mid 70's I used to ride Bart a a lot and stand up by the glass door and watch the operators cab.... I always thought that that would be a cool job to operate a Bart train. Very cool video brings back a lot of memories. Love your other video also... the tunnel between Oridna and Rockridge.

  • It's comparable to hong kong's MTR

  • not really cause there is alot of accidents and mtr is much more safer and better

  • I think the BART trains are my favorites look wise

  • You said it goes up to 80 miles/hour? That's intense. Subways here only hit 50 kilometers a hour...ehh thats around 30 miles/hour and we still get derailments.

  • ALOT of money goes into keeping BART safe and ontime

  • I can definately see, BART even has protective covers for the 3rd rail.

But it said the expense was a lot higher than revenue, which can sometimes be a problem.

  • @CoCoEMT

    is this in the suburbs?

it looks like a rural area

  • And their extensions to suburbia

  • is BART controlled by computers? what does the driver have to do?

  • Autopilot for normal operation.. Manual for when stuff goes wrong....

  • ok thats cool, thanks

  • @CoCoEMT wow, i;d kinda hate that because you can get bored, and you can't even go on your phone or anything cuz you have to pay attention lol. had you ever been tierd and being afraid to fall asleep?

  • @unionpacificrr Yes it is controlled by computers, the operator does not have to do much...

    \

  • It seems like it would be relaxing to drive the train...

  • This is the type of job I would really like to do. Maybe when I retire, I'll take this up for fun

  • I take this exact Concord BART train.

  • I love BART! One of my favorites trains system transportation! Organized, reliable, fast....

  • fast? meh! try bullet trains in japan, china, and europe! they'll leave BART in the dust!

  • I do agree with you! But in the USA we haven't had anything high up scale like the ones you have mentioned.I hope the goverment will bring all that modernity to us before it becomes past again!

  • where not in japan Bart in the ba means Bay area ok you understand!

  • Leaving south end of urban Concord (brand new Police Station was unseen), over Systron Drive & and leaving Momental Blvd. (on your right), and then Concord Yard, and then great curve, passing through now northern-most suburb of Walnut Creek, & then over Oak Grove Road, over La Juntas Way, and then bit later after long stretch of vegetation before reveling Goggins Drive with Iron Horse Trail (railbed of former Sacramento Northern RR) & now arriving BART Pleasant Hill Station and Garages.

  • From Aug to DEC 1997 I travelling along this portion for San Francisco and Oakland metropolis when lived in Concord. Mt. Diablo is not shown but regional park with high hills on your left as you enter Concord Yard. Did you hear series of thumpings when enter great curve? I always get up to prepare arriving my home, Concord Station. I call this "Mt. Diablo Route" while it is officially known as BART Yellow Line. This is note that never included in my unpublished novel "Gratify Lasting Paradise."

  • Yes...

  • I went on the BART Yellow Line to San Francisco Civic Center/UN Plaza station from the Walnut Creek station for the first time on April 18, 2007 (the 101st anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake).
