For the history, the black one is a "Technic Gear Rack 1 x 8 with Holes" (part 6630) while the grey is a "Technic Gear Rack 1 x 10 with Holes) (part 6592).
You can find the 6592 in 14 different LEGO sets. Mine are form the Chopper Force (8232, rel 1997) and the Racing Truck (5562, rel 1999). The 6630 was included in 30 different LEGO sets (the one I have is from the Vladek's Dark Fortress set 8877, rel 2005).
I'm having the most problems with the track that it slides on. I just dont have enough pieces, so I'm trying to adapt it to what I have. If you can you should make some instructional videos on how it was made and how it works.
At my personal site, as well as at the official LEGO Mindstorms NXTLOG (search for NeXTSTORM) you'll find a detailed LDD instruction file. Just note at the time this LDD was made some elements were not yet included in the LDD library. Thus, compare what you'll find with the photos.
sorry, I don't think I'll be able to make it. I just don't have many technique pieces. I understand how it works and how to make it but it is really hard to get around the limitations.
I'll be glad to see it!!!! This is one of my favorite "machines". The most "tricky" part is the automated switching module (located on top) that changes the active gearing set by gravity force. NeXTSTORM
