Barack Obama is dishonest. The La times talked about it journalists talk about it. Come on now do we need another liar in our presidency do some research! Hillary clinton and Barack Obama are both on the same evil Council of Foreign relations. He is a lawyer trying to convince his jury. He doesnt want to take attacking iran off the table, oh but then he does. You need to check the AIPAC conference speech of Obama yourself all of you be informed. Everyone lies except Ron Paul and kucinich.
Please Americans... show me we still are a great nation and elect Barack Obama as the President of the United States. Talk about an upgrade... from George W. Bush to Barack Obama. This will be a great first step in moving our country in the right direction
People in Iowa have seen more of these candidates than anyone else in the country and therefore are making a more educated decision than the rest of the nation. The national polls reflect this. Hopefully as the country learns more in the coming weeks, the national polls will reflect the Iowa caucus.
John Kerry just illustrates a fact that the Hillary backers don't want to bring up. Electability only wins primaries. It means next to nothing in a general election.
America need a new face like Obama to prove to the world that we are (USA) still Number one (1) in democracy, respect for human life, military power, respect for women and children... I believe Obama is the best person that can restore America moral value in this new world.... Obama will restore USA image.... Go Obama
now we need mandatory completion of high school for all americans to reduce crime and poverty. Barack has enough experience and competence to run this country. His speech is care and not hate nor division. We need a change for America
FiatEmpire{dot}com starring RON PAUL, I think I understand now why we should return to a gold standard, it would put a cap on money forceing us to use our goods and services as trade, instead of free trade we need fair trade. Am I Right?
Hillary is such a loser! If you wanna go on experience Hillary, release those 2,000,000,000 pages about your time as first lady that your husband had sealed. Hmmmm interesting girl. Just quit and save some money for those poor people giving money to you.
Can anyone tell me why the Iowa caucas matters so much? Why is the consensus in Iowa so important, even though Iowa is not an accurate cross section of the American people?
they fail to mention Bill Richardson who could upset them all. governors win over senators in the general election, besides Bill Richardson has a proven record of experience...three-way race, my ass...Kerry was polling at 4% before he beat the front runner Dean.
Iowa is the first to vote in the primary season. It's actually a "caucus" which is different than a secret-ballot-direct election-primary. But the what matters is, Iowa votes first, then the cable news and all of the rest of the media makes a big deal about the results there. This amounts to free advertising for whoever does well in Iowa. Often that turns out to influence the following primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and then the rest of the states as they vote later.
Really tired about the "electability" quotient being thrown out there with media saying Hillary is more electable. Just had Thanksgiving with my North Carolina family who has been voting Republican in recent elections (not I). Though they are all upset by Bush, et al, a few said they would absolutely not vote for Hillary though were very interested in Barack.
Did Hillary just say we can't afford "on the job training"? Has she been pres before? Besides, Obama is rather the only candidate that can go unchallenged by the republicans- they can't touch him.
The last thing we need is a second "dynasty type" presidency. Experience doesn't mean anything if you still continue to exercise poor judgement. I just don't trust Hillary to be independently minded when it comes to up and coming political trends. This is dangerous when we need to see U.S. policy deviate from a status quo mentality on everything from climate change to the Iraq War.
"If you wanted the crudest but most effective weapon against the demonization of America that fuels Islamist ideology, Obama's face gets close." by Andrew Sullivan.
The time has come, for all US to stand with Obama. There is room for change, a new era in our Great Nation. Let's stand with him, he's an Honorable Man and he will make a great President.
The republicans are just using tactics. By them saying they want Hillary is a set up. They really want Barack, because no doubt.. They're gonna beat him. He knows he is not going to win. IT's JUST AN EGO TRIP.
Barack Obama is not going to win.. People, brace yourself for another republic prez, if he wins the nomination, because America is never going to elect a black president. This is real.
people have been bitching about his numbers and being low in the polls and I tell them, this man is great and although only you and I see that now, it will slowly spread and he will become our new president. Plus look at history, after our worst pres. Bucchannon, we had Lincoln. After Hoover started the depression, we had Roosevelt. It would only make sense that after a man that destroyed our economy and polarized our nation that we would have someone as great as Barack Obama.
The rest of the country feels the winner of Iowa has the best chance at winning the general election, so they tend to rally behind that candidate after the results.
Well, as somebody said down there, Iowa's the first primary. Right after the Iowa caucus is the New Hampshire primary. So, whoever wins Iowa, goes into New Hampshire with huge media coverage. Also, since Clinton's the national front-runner, and viewed by some as inevitable, if Obama beats her in Iowa, he looks like a giant killer. People want to elect a winner. That damages Hillary's electability argument.
Iowa is the first state to vote on January 3rd. The entire country watches the results from the early states very closely and generally, the winner of the early states goes on to win the nomination.
Grats on the success in Iowa Barack. I hope you can keep it up.
Iowa and New Hampshire are important because these states usually have the first primary elections. The people who win in these states are seen as winners and thus will probably go on to win other primary elections in other states as well.
Watch the video again and you'll see Obama mention this at around :58.
Iowa is the first caucus, and as such works as the first step for whoever will be the democratic party's nominee. The winner often takes that momentum and the ensuing press coverage of the winner to reinforce his/her image as an electible and viable canididate.
Not a stupid question at all. The reason is Iowa will be the first to choose the presidential candidates for the general election. And this acts as a message to the rest of the country. Nearly, all winners of Iowa caucuses end up being the leader for the general election because it sets the pace. This has more influence than any of the polls, which most people use to try to decide which of the top candidates they want. Hope this helps.
Each state votes on who they want as their nominee for president; presidential candidates need to win caucuses/primaries to win the nomination of their party. Edwards, Obama, and Clinton are fighting tooth and nail over Iowa because it occurs the earliest in the calendar year and tends to set the tone leading up to the remaining caucuses/primaries (i.e. it spells defeat or victory)
Iowa voters do get more exposure to the candidates and are very involved in the process compared to later states, but it is really a shame that voters in other states sometimes just follow like sheep because of the media hype after Iowa. States that vote very late in the primaries get basically no say in the process because of the avalanche of delegates at the beginning of the primary season. By the tiem a state like Kansas votes, the race is virtually or completely over.
ahhhhh it's not stupid question...Iowa traditionally is the first state in the nation to hold a contest for who the state's voters want to be the democrat and republican nominee. Their day is January 3rd,2008. Candidate's have to travel all over Iowa to sell themselves to voter's through the practice of "retail politics". The idea is when a candidate wins Iowa, in many cases(not all) their support gets a large boost to get them the nomination.
i am a republican who is fed up with republicans. i will vote democrat if obama wins the democratic nomination. I refuse to vote for Hillary under any circumstances.
Hillary Clinton says that she has the most experience for the job. Given that the presidency is a unique position, no one exactly has the experience of being president, and therefore her statement is invalidated.
Honeslty, I like Barack and Hillary... ANYONE is better than Edwards. I just don't think he'd know the truth if it bit him on the ass. Infact if he did get bit on the ass, he'd probably make a speech about it that begins with "See, I KNOW what its like to be bitten on the ass....".
Obama - next time Hillary says that she is more experienced just say "I don't need Hillary's experience, I'm not running to be first lady, I'm running to be president of the United States"
You know, I really don't get the electability thing. I mean, Karl Rove assumes Clinton's the nominee, Bush assumes Clinton's the nominee - that should scare the crap out of Democrats.
I am an Iowan living in England and I just decided today I am going to make sure I am at the caucuses to support Obama. It is Thursday, January 3, 2008. Please join me.
What's special about Iowa is the same as what's special about New Hampshire: they are states in which the voters take their responsibility very seriously and make an effort to be informed, meet the candidates, and really test them.
50% of general election voters say they would never vote for Hillary. While she is already uniting the Republican Party against her, Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire are changing parties to support Senator Obama because he has a proven track record of working across the aisle to solve difficult problems. This is the kind of consensus building leadership we need to unify our country, change the status quo, restore trust in our government and make real change happen.
The Iowa caucus is recognized as the first step in the Presidential nomination process for both the Democrats and the Republican candidates. It serves as an indication who among the candidates, whether Democrat or Republican, will win their respective party's nomination in the national convention. The winner will be the standard bearer of their respective party come the US Presidential election in November.
despite the criticisms of the iowa/nh first-in-the-nation process, i think it is well worth it, and people should really get a better understanding of the process and its true value before criticizing it and calling for things like a national primary.
I agree. Before this page is flooded with comments, I say that belief in someone's ability to be elected is equal to actually getting elected (self-fulfilling prophecy). Remember to convince them you can be elected, and you will.
It's like a focus group. I guess it's more "scientific" this way... except, we should really be mixing it around. Oh well. We'll have to fix it in four years.
With the system we have, whoever wins Iowa gets an instant 20% boost in national polls. The more people know about Barack, the more likely they'll vote for him. Which is why in Iowa, where he's campaigned the most, he's got the best chance.
This is a good question(I'm not and Iowan). You want a couple of "small" semi-swing states to be the first in the nation. The cost of advertising and likelihood that candidates can meet with people in person improve likability and mass appeal. If say California, New York, or Texas were the first state it would be about who could buy more TV ads. Should Iowa always get to be first?
obama did not vote for the war in iarq hillery did
if hillery wins the demacrtic nonmine her republcian advisary will be able to use that against her and the republcian will have a greater chance of wining
that is why some one who did not vote for this war neads to win the demacratic nonmine..... some one like obama!!!!!!

They're already looking over the play book.

Obama is the most electable based on honesty, integrity, and ability to change our government for the people of a "United States of America."

That's great news. I'm glad Iowa voters are starting to see Hillary for who she really is, a politician.

I am an Iowan living in England and I just decided today I am going to make sure I am at the caucuses to support Obama. It is Thursday, January 3, 2008. Please join me.

What's special about Iowa is the same as what's special about New Hampshire: they are states in which the voters take their responsibility very seriously and make an effort to be informed, meet the candidates, and really test them.

with 4.5% margin of error, they're all probably tied at 26! Dead Heat for sure.
That said, 08ama!

This is great news!! Way to go Barack Obama!!!

The primary system is broken. You'd better change it completely next time.

everyone in iowa should vote for kucinich, the guy who doesn't censor his donors gentle criticism on Youtube.
souljaEXVOTO 4 years ago
despite the criticisms of the iowa/nh first-in-the-nation process, i think it is well worth it, and people should really get a better understanding of the process and its true value before criticizing it and calling for things like a national primary.

I agree. Before this page is flooded with comments, I say that belief in someone's ability to be elected is equal to actually getting elected (self-fulfilling prophecy). Remember to convince them you can be elected, and you will.
nextgenerationlibert 4 years ago
Okay, John Kerry may have seemed more electable, but he wasn't elected. A lot can happen in a year.
Hilary may have experience, but her experience seems to have led her to disecreteness. She seems to hold her tongue on issues and I am not sure why.

i was just wondering whats so special about IOWA
FranchiZewuzhere 4 years ago 12
Iowa is where the primaries and caucuses go first. We get to vote first who will be the candidates for president.
As to WHY Iowa, I have no idea. Maybe because we have more corn? WORSHIP THE CORN!!!
nextgenerationlibert 4 years ago
no really....why is Iowa such an important state for the democrats???
malyikaj 4 years ago

In short, public financing of elections and a restructured primary schedule could make this a much more democratic process.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have a quick question. Who are we leaving the responsibility of electing OBAMA to the white house when more than half of those of us that know he is the best think he can't make it there? Hear this! The number of people who like Obama and think he can't make it to the white house is enough to get him there. We need to believe!
