I recently got 'The Ringworld Throne', haven't read it yet. My library has this sale twice a year where you take a grocery bag and fill it with as many books as you can and you only pay $1. No limit on how many bags you can buy either. I love it. There aren't any recent books, but still plenty of goods ones. Anyway, I got a giggle from seeing a book from my shelves in your review. Awesome videos by the way.
Looking For Alaska by John Green, Funny and sad. An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, Funny and Smart. Paper Towns by John Green, Funny and Smart, a little sad. Will Grayson, Will Grayson, by John Green and David Levithan, Funny Smart, a little sad. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, Funny, Smart, and Sad.
Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson. Great story, great characters, mind-blowing twist, clumsy translation which is to be expected, but it is one of the best books I've read this year. It's brutal, violent, disturbing, but SO ENGAGING.
Utter agreement about Terry Pratchett. As for Sorcery and Cecilia, Ohmygoodness I had no idea anyone other than my mother and me had read that book. So much fun. The sequel(s? It's been a while) is/are also fabulous. I specifically remember Grand Tour. Nothing like magic, pride and prejudice main characters, and a traipse through all of Europe. Patricia C. I LOVE LOVE LOVE TERRY PRATCHETT. EVEN MORE THAN I LOVE YOU, HANK!
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Hank, you're so great. I love you.
Although (and I'm pretty sure this has been pointed out, I just don't want to scroll through all the comments) you were a little confused about "The Truth." The main character is actually a new one, William de Worde. If you want to read about Moist von Lipwig (a great character, I really love him), you want to read "Going Postal" and its sequel, "Making Money."
@Scubaraptor I actually prefer his later works, my copy of The Hogfather is falling to bits its so amazing. If you wana get a feel of the world without having to know the extra background characters id highly recommend Going Postal.
Try reading Good Omens by Niel Gaiman AND Terry Pratchett. It is basically the Armageddon made funny. I'm serious. This is the most freaking hilarious thing you will read all year. I guarantee.
I found a book called insultingly stupid movie physics. If you like physics and don't mind the bashing of movies such as JFK, The Matrix, Star Wars, and Star Trek, the book it very good. Hank, you might like this more than John.
I wished you talked about Hyperion longer as it's one of my favorite series (Hyperion is the first book in the 4 book Hyperion Cantos series) It's not anymore crazy then the stuff that happens in Doctor Who, in fact, much less so.
It tells the story of 6 people going to see a being known as the Shrike. They each tell how they got to where they are now, which beautifully shows the universe the book takes place in while being interesting and not an info dump. If you like Sci Fi check it out!
While on the topic of Terry Pratchett (may he never stop writing!) did you know he was knighted for services to literature! well deserved.
The Wee Free Men, and one of its sequels, A Hat Full Of Sky were fantastic, I will never look at witches, sheep liniment, or life and death the same way.
the colour purple by Alice Walker is amazing, it is so emotional and engrossing that i read it in 4 hours strait, the protagonist Celie is a beautiful character that you will fall in love with her like i did. i am 14 and read the book a year ago, it is awesome and you should most definatly read it, but some parts are hard to read because of how much you will care about Celie while reading the book. (sorry about the really long comment)
Hank, I love that you love Terry Pratchett, but William de Worde is the main character in The Truth, not Moist von Lipwig. It is , of course, still an amazing book.
There is a book that I am currently reading for pyschology called "A little prisoner." That book is definitely not for the faint hearted. It's a disturbing book about a girl that gets mentally, physically, emotionally, and sexually abused from her step-father. It's a true story, and sometimes I seriously can't continue reading.
The Giver is a really good book, philosophical and makes you appreciate life's differences and stuff...read it in Grade 8, and read it now, still good
@madscribbles101 oh my gosh, I love The Giver!!! I had to read it for an 8th grade English class, and it really made me appreciate utopian literature!
U should read ALL the Percy Jackson books and the Heros of olympus books by Rick riordan I think they are the best books on this earth I love them!!!!!!!!! By th way speaking of books and nerdfightaria John green is going to be at clues hall Indianapolis IN on 11-1-11 at 7:30 for a book signing and stuff! I'm so happy XD!
I know this video is old but I'm commenting anyways. You said to put book reviews in the comments, but I would rather just point out that my channel (though new) is a weekly book review channel. Always taking suggestions for new books to read, so check it out if you want (or not, no biggie).
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende-great book-and contrary to what the movie says-Ende even mentioned it-it is written for the children at heart-NOT kids-the themes run a bit deep for children-and I wish the publishers would publish it out again in it's original ink-which was red and green-red for our world, green for Fantasia.
They're not making a movie based on Hyperion but a movie called The Immortals and it features imagery from Hyperion the book. It's from the producer of 300.
I just recently re-watched this video on my television and I was disturbed to realize that I can identify the translator of Beowulf based solely on the spine of the book.
"THE RULE OF FOUR" - I would give a review here, but I'd probably spoil it if I said anything more than 'somewhere between "Indiana Jones" & "The Da Vinci Code," with a nod to a reunion for "The Breakfast Club"
(I suggest you do a review of it that would be way-better).
That was one of the most thoughtful reviews I’ve read in awhile. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Robert Olen Butler’s new novel “A Small Hotel.” Keep up the great work, I just subscribed to your channel.
Les miserables IS already a classic. It was published in 1862...way before the musical or any film adaptation. When u review sth u should at least know the details. U cannot say it will be a classic, as if it was published yesterday!
I was looking up Novels to read for a book review and I saw VlogBrothers on the recommended and I just clicked and said: Yeah, I totally trust the Vlog Brothers with my grade :D
At least three or four of these books are ones that I've been meaning to read for ages. All of them got favorable reviews. I'm glad my tastes have your approval, Hank.^^
Anything by Matthew Reilly is great for just a crazy non-stop movie-esque thrill ride. Some are full of wise-cracking marines, others are like Indiana Jones with way more guns! And one was like gladiators meet aliens...
Also, Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Watching the Clock by Christopher L Bennett is great if you enjoy having your brain melted by temporal physics and quantum mechanics. The characters are just hilarious as well!
Uhh... Hank, how long ago was it that you read The Truth? Even I am not *that* confused, and I remained convinced for several months that Sacharissa was Death's daughter.
Anything by Chris Crutcher is wondrous. I adore his books, so very entirely way too friggin bloody much. Great books for teens, dealing with a lot of very real issues. And all of his books have been banned.
Also, Robin Mckinley. Holy fridge her books are great. There're swords as well as sorcery, but it's strangely far from typical sword-and-sorcery. At least, The Blue Sword and Hero and the Crown are this type. She also writes a mean fairy tale re-telling, especially of Beauty and the Beast.
The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine: This is the same author of Ella Enchanted, and she has written many fantasy stories, which are all amazing. They aren't so realistic they take away from the whimsy, nor vice versa. I love the heroine in this book because she is very atypical-at first, she's nervous, terrified of spiders and the dark and many more things, but proves to be braver than she thought. Very sweet and will have you turning the pages faster than you thought possible
I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan (along with the rest of her books): Teen Thriller, warning: do no watch the movie it was completely buchered.
Beastly by Alex Flinn: Teen Fantasy/Romance: I have not seen the movie, sounds a bit too altered but the presence of Neil Patrick Harris makes up for it.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury: Dystopian: Warning: swearing, suicide attempt, murder, worst of all, book burning (gasp, tear). Movie: altered with some bad acting.
Staying Fat for Sarah Byrns: Good book. Slow beginning. At first, it frustrated me, the way the book portrayed Christians. Then, we met Ellerby's dad. RETRIBUTION! :) Now GET THEE TO A LIBRARY!
I glanced at my pathetic library only to say... The Last Dragon by Silvana Di Mari. I read this book in the 4th grade and I could read it continually for the rest of my life. It's an excellent book for fantasy lovers. I need to get my hands on a copy so I can read it again.
Another book (series), is called Fablehaven by Brandon Mull also a fantasy fanatic series. It's about these 2 kids, brother and sister, and they're sent to live with their grandfather for a short time. Their grandfather li
Neal Stephenson is always worth a read, and I'm pretty sure Hank would enjoy Snow Crash :). It's an excellent, slightly cyberpunky, well-written book that blends theology, sociology and technology seamlessly. And the good guy's name is Hiro Protagonist XD.
Thank you for your review of Sorcery and Cecelia. I LOVED Patricia C. Wrede in the '80s and '90s. I don't know what happened but I never saw another one of her books after the raven ring in the mid 90s. I'm really looking forward to being reintroduced to her books after such a long time without her.
Juliet by Anne Foriter - genuinely one of the best books ever, I think it's probably changed my life. Its so much more than just an amazing love story. In terms of my favorites it's RIGHT UNDER Harry Potter.
I finished my first Terry Pratchett today, ''Mort'', from the Discworld! I am a little reborn now, you understand! I love love love Death As A Characther in general, but oooh my how Pratchett writes him, it's EPIC!
The Chrestomanci series is old fashioned magic, with a touch of nostalgic life morals and beauty. I'd recommend it as an excellent read for anyone who is ambivalent about the city life due to an affinity for small town America (or Europe w/eva)
I loved Orson Scott Card's new book, The Lost Gate - and although I dislike Mr. Card's views on same sex marriage I cannot bring myself to punish his books for them.
TERRY PRATCHETT IS A GOD. I love him. I love his books.
But I think you're getting some plots mixed up in your head. William de Worde is the main character of The Truth. He'a amazing, but no con-man. And not quite as amazing as Moist. Do love Otto Chriek, though ; )
My fave Pratchett book: Probably Small Gods. Epic.
Ooh, I haven't read Les Misérables yet...when I tried reading it in the original French when I was ten (hoo ha NERDFIGHTERS!), it was too long and the slang was too hard to understand. Is it really that good in English, or should I try the French again? Has anyone here read both?
@topcat3768 I'll just say I've read it twice in English and plan on rereading it again in the near future. The book, like you and I, is made of Awesome.
When you said that your camera battery was running out, I watched anxiously for a whole minute, for some reason thinking that the video could be cut off at any moment. *headdesk*
@BlackRoseGirl417 I think there are 4 kinds: Good, Suck, Harry Potter, and John Green. (While John Green and Harry Potter are both awesome, they are awesome in two completely different ways.)
You said that no one cares. Yes, we do care, which is quite obvious. Yes, having lots of subscribers doesn't mean much, but it does mean that there are lots of people who care about what you have to say. I never said I was smart because I read books, but yes, it was implied. Please excuse me for not giving a shit about what a random twelve-year-old thinks.
I haven't read a lot of Science Fiction because I haven't given it a chance but if I were to start reading some where would be a good place to start :) Nothing to Nerdy please :)
I haven't read a lot of Science Fiction because I haven't given it a chance but if I were to start reading some where would be a good place to start :) Nothing to Nerdy please :)
i read paper towns last week, after waiting for ages for it to be deliverd to the shop, and it took me a day to finish because no matter what i realy couldnt put it down, i was even reading it in lessons, not that it matters because we were just waiting for a few people to finish coursework anyway, but deffinatley the best book i have ever read, and im now waiting for johns other books from amazon :)
I'd have to recommend "The Element" by Sir Ken Robinson - I was impressed, he writes about the means by which to discover that which you are most passionate about. He also touches on the importance of creativity and provides a number of personal stories from people he interviewed to do so. Good stuff. I think I'm going to make a video review on "The Element" in a week or so.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i love books! espacaly all the twilight books. stephany myer dose a fantastic job of bringing u into the caraters and is very vivid in all that she explanes about the events in all of her books
What can I say but, You have incredible talent. I was in radio for over 12 years and your delivery is terrific. Great job!! And I believe that you actually have read the books because I do not think that you were reading a script. Very clever ....10 book reviews in 4 min. Applause!!
I am trying to spread the word every1 should read Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater!! It is a really good book, and if u love love stories, this book is perfect 4 u. I want Shiver 2 become the next big thing after Twilight and The Hunger Games. So tell ur friends, spread the word, and mostly impotantly read the book 4 urself!!!!! :)
Finished The Bermudez Triangle based on this recommendation. :) Took me a while to get into it, some of Maureen Johnson's writing had me groaning, but once I was into it, I was hooked like a nerd to high speed internet. So I recommend it!
@LieutenantShwa I think you're right, wasn't it William de Worde? And I distinctly remember Moist being hung AFTER the Truth takes place... the hangman says something about which papers are covering the hanging, and in The Truth they all talk about how Vetinari wouldn't let movable type come in.
the truth is not about moist von lipwig. He is the main caracter of going postal (now alsow a movie) and making money. the truth is about william theword
still you are right about terry pratchet being the best
@blackzabbathfan Uhmm...if you've read the books, you should get that Harry Potter is a category all of it's own. It's more than a series, Harry Potter is a culture; a lifestyle. Harry Potter is the standard to which all other YA Fiction is held to now.
@vlogbrothers I also love the work of terry Pratchett and think 'the truth' is great but so you don't accidentally mislead people I thought I'd remind you that Moist Von Lipwig isn't in it, William De Worde is.
Year of the Black Rainbow by Claudio Sanchez and Peter David 11/10
Best book I have ever read. Although it could be because I'm a fan of the comics that proceeded it and wanted to know the origins but even my mom loved it! Haha so yeah, Hank you should check out Year of the Black Rainbow. It's a great book, very Sci-Fi so you might enjoy it :D
@lalibrarylady86 Yes, that's what I wanted to say too! Hank, if you thought that was long, try the original version - I took me more than a year to finish! Frankly, by the end of it, I hated Victor Hugo with every fibre of my being, but in retrospect, it was a great book, and I'm proud of myself for finishing it.
Moist von Lipwig isn't the star of The Truth. William de Worde is. I'm pretty sure Moist hadn't entered the series by the time The Truth came out. Still, it's a great book.
I recently got 'The Ringworld Throne', haven't read it yet. My library has this sale twice a year where you take a grocery bag and fill it with as many books as you can and you only pay $1.

I just finished reading a book and I was looking for more good books when I stumbled upon this video! Thank you!

Books I recommend:
I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan (along with the rest of her books): Teen Thriller, warning: do no watch the movie it was completely buchered.
Beastly by Alex Flinn: Teen Fantasy/Romance: I have not seen the movie, sounds a bit too altered but the presence of Neil Patrick Harris makes up for it.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury: Dystopian: Warning: swearing, suicide attempt, murder, worst of all, book burning (gasp, tear). Movie: altered with some bad acting.

The Chrestomanci series is old fashioned magic, with a touch of nostalgic life morals and beauty. I'd recommend it as an excellent read for anyone who is ambivalent about the city life due to an affinity for small town America (or Europe w/eva)

@Blinkyboy99 *you're *subscribers

@LieutenantShwa I think you're right, wasn't it William de Worde? And I distinctly remember Moist being hung AFTER the Truth takes place... the hangman says something about which papers are covering the hanging, and in The Truth they all talk about how Vetinari wouldn't let movable type come in.

@lalibrarylady86 Yes, that's what I wanted to say too! Hank, if you thought that was long, try the original version - I took me more than a year to finish!
