I never knew of the "Mark I" lineup til a couple of years of listening to the "Mark II" stuff... and it was a bit confusing after listening to the Evan/Simper era, but I still liked it immediately. I could hear the transformation taking place for albums yet to come -- -- great stuff here and "Chasing Shadows", "Bird has Flown", and "Why Didn't Rosemary" still spin on my turntable to this day...
@pierrepierro According to me, your comment is rather foolish, given that Purple had by this stage been around for several years, put out two albums; Sabbath hadn't even recorded an album when this album hit the stores.
this was the first version i heard of this, but i recently discovered a second version, possibly the original or an alternate take. anyone know whats up with these?
I think Purple did 25 recorded versions of everything they released :) I imagine (as in I speculate) they knew this song was killer, but too long (5:27 or so) to get on AM radio as a single.
I just found a version they did of Speed King called 'Kneel and Pray' that was half as long as Speed King. Again, I speculate it was the demands of radio that made "3 and out" versions seem necessary.
Great song with wonderful imagery! Love the very 60s-ish Hammond organ, particularly on the extended version that was the album track. I think this version here is the edited single cut.
one of my favorite songs that "And the address" and "The Shield"

Is that the "Hendrix chord" (7#9) he's playing here on the main riff?
Also, it sounds like that chord is backwards ...is that some effect he's using or they actually reversed it?
