Ha I remember Susan Stranks on Magpie demonstrating how Victorians bathed. The programme ( I guess) must have been filmed live in those days. She was sat in this Victorian bath in bubbles & exposed inadvertently one of her tits, they carried on filming as she carried on talking & clearly oblivious. I was only a young kid at the time, but I will never forget it lol. Needles to say it was never repeated. I wonder if she remembers !
'Id rather 'ave some fish & chips'. Outrage! She dropped her aitches in the 60s, I'm surprised there wasn't a national outcry and questions asked in Parliament.
1 for sorrow 2 for joy. In October 2004 I saw 1 single magpie in the School grounds at Gemma's playgroup. 2 months later, my partner died from throat cancer.
Always regarded as the poor man's Blue Peter, but listen to Susan Stranks intro "unauthorised persons are strictly prohibited". Try that level of vocabulary in 2011 and see where it gets you! "Do I look bovvered?" or some such reply, punctuated at regular intervals by a word beginning with 'f'.
Susan did a series each week on Magpie regarding Fashions through the ages, when she reached the 1970's she wore a see through dress through which her braless breasts were clearly visible to all of us fevered adolescents ,most of whom no doubt 'dedicated one' to her... Ahh Memories
@stoobee09 You ain't kidding! I became a leg man because of her! She wore this tiny mini-kilt and long boots one day and thanks to that I knackered my eye-sight (I was warned it would make me go blind...!!!!) Cor!!
I'm looking through these videos to see if Susans legs were as great as I remember them when I was twelve. I'm sure they were but I can't find the definitive clip.
I liked Susan Stranks as a kid. I always recall her doing things with scissors and flared jeans and making them even wider in 1974. The Goddess of Magpie!
Su Stranks did a little supply teaching at our school. I was actually caned by her on more than one occasion. She was very strict but a great teacher.
@barttheanorak Not at our primary school anyway. I remember once it was for throwing a snowball that had a piece of ice in it and cut some boy's face. The cane was used quite frequently and not just by the headmaster.
Susan Stranks was SO gorgeous! Loved her accent. So sad about Tony Bastable's death. Used to rush home from school to see those old programmes like "Magpie" "Lost In Space".."Do Not Adjust Your Set" and then Eamonn Andrews/Monty Modlyn/Bill Grundy news prog called "Today" which had a stunningly attractive presenter called Sandra Harris. Whatever became of Sandra?
@mojoelem Oh God! Yeah I remember "Today" - the theme tune was a variation on "The Associations" "Windy". Why don't they make programmes like that anymore? They replaced "Today" with the dreary "Thames News". I loved Sandra Harris too. She later did this sort of gossip section in the show called "Sandra".
Asking around it seems this came from an old VT fragment recovered by a guy called Terry Martini. I'd seen a compilation of his amazing 1960s tape material and reckoned I'd seen all of it but this wasn't there!
Presumably this is the edition tx 3/4/69 (Susan mentions Easter) which was billed as 'How television works" which fits what she says about "technical television equipment"? Where was this found? This edition was previously thought lost? How much is there beyond this first minute or two?
This is tremendous! Magpie only had a year or so in black and white before switching to colour in 1969, so this is the real vintage deal. Great find - and a teasing glimpse behind the scenes at Teddington Lock!
Oh yes! Sue Stranks- the perfect antidote to Valerie Singleton. Jenny Handley was every bit as hot, too! Posh Tottie.

You can tell this is a British children's show, the presenter's wearing cufflinks. You've got to love us.

How odd, I thought Teddington had their own mnemonic.

There were a lot of things I didn't understand about TV in the early 70s, like why the Magpie logo looked like a set of false teeth!

This would be April 1969 as Thames TV went on the air on July 30th 1968, so this one of very earliest clips.

She had her hair in cute bunches! Was that a 60s fashion for grown-up women? My mum used to style my hair like that, in 1973 when I was 6!

Man, the US doesn't even have older kids' shows this cool on now, much less from the 60s.
I wish I'd

B) in the UK

@davidgrahamscott That's not fair. No wonder they abolished it if it was used that liberally. My school was progressive and didn't have one.

Susan Stranks, like Jennie Hanley, would usually go bra-less so I'm told by older guys. They said both would just wear tee shirts nothing else! WOW!

Its Tony Bastable, you can hear Susan say Tony in the clip.

She may have been introducing Tony Bastable but that's not him. There is an edit straight into Pete Brady. That's why we go back to Susan so quickly.

I stand corrected, it is Pete Brady.

It has to be from 69 as Thames did not start till the Summer of 68.
Anyone know what the purpose of Susan Strand being in vtr was?
