  • what opera is this from?

  • They are rolled up in the black band below the gold crown. If you look at the start the roll is very visable and large, then the last black mask is made up of the same material, and if you look then (at the end) the rolled up black materail is gone.

  • how to do that ??

  • 1)

    PETER: Who are you?

VALERIO: I'm not sure I know. [He slowly removes several masks, one after the

another.] Am I this? Or this? Or this? What a frightening thought: if I keep on removing layer after layer, I might peel myself entirely away.

PETER [disconcerted]: But surely you must be something?

  • 2)

VALERIO: If your Majesty so commands. But in that case, gentlemen, turn the

mirrors to the wall, cover your shiny buttons, and don't look at me like that lest I see my reflection mirrored in your eyes - or I truly won't know any more who I am.

PETER: This fellow is throwing me into total turmoil and deep desperation. I'm

    calamitously confused.

From the play (1836) "Leonce and Lena", German writer Georg Büchner (1813-1837).

  • Ahh I want to learn this so badly!!

  • i know how its done! these damn chineses stop the time-and they go to the heart of india and to get the fiber of each mask. then they go to japan to have it painted. and finally go to vietnam to eat - and comeback to the show to only "unfreeze" the time. then once they are about to change again, they stop the time again! I got it all figured out. damn chineses!

  • @0TylerDurden0 ...The fuck? o_o

  • @0TylerDurden0 Whatever. Dun insult.

  • i'm guessing, that the masks are rolled up under the hat, and that the sudden movement of their head causes the mask to drop/rise, and i think this is true because in all the vids i've seen they all have hats and when he puts on the mask at the end, u can see a rolled up black material under his hat.

  • this is bloody amazing!!!!!....

  • This makes me proud to be Chinese. :)

  • @ladyhaku well, im still mexican...

  • i love it!

  • of course its not thin layers under ech ohter....HAVE U SEEN HOW THICK THESE MAKS ARE!!!? they are thick and if it was thin layers under each other there would alwasy be the danger that you woud rip off too many of damage them or knoack off all ur masks completly when performing...its black magic.....China's best kept hidden secret....

  • everything you said was logical until the black magic part lol

  • Those who say he has layers of masks one on top of each other and takes them off one by one are wrong. Go to the following video and see that he takes mask off showing his face, puts it back on, then takes it back off and puts it back on at lightening speed:

    Name: What's behind Chinese masks

  • @tupac777b

except that wouldn't work because at one point u see his face like

u can see the nose, and the wrinkles on his face and his tongue. but then the next mask doesn't show his facial features. It is black and covers the nose, eyes, and mouth.

So ur theory is nice, but it doesn't work. :)

  • 3rd one scared the shit outta me

  • the best i've ever seen

  • outstanding and bravo to the prformer!!

    from steve

  • does anyone know the name of the performer? Hes AMAZING!

  • i think it has something to do with the angle of the moon and its effects on the earth, and ill throw in a couple of magnets, and maybe mirrors, or ill just stick with practice x

  • These face changers are NOT HUMAN. THEY ARE NOT HUMAN!!!! THEY ARE SOME SUPERNATURAL BEING.

  • cool stuff

  • scary shit

  • You have to undergo a lot of training to be able to do face changing from what i have heard. They only teach very few people the art.

  • 0:01 the fan is just distracting he changed his face already he did it when he turn around

  • i think the secret is in the hat

  • its not ;)

  • the one w/ the tongue was freaky!

  • it was his real face u idoit

  • just watch his arms and movement then you

    will see...

  • this is easy to perform

  • so easy you tell us how la

  • hai you a! hhhlllll!! XD

  • how does it work ?

  • he's an ALIEN

  • he is a professional performing artist. :D

  • poop in my mouth please. this audio preview is funny when it says that lol

  • i think its like a fabric that is layered over the other "masks". they come down form the top of the helmet they wear and stretch over their face.

  • The third was his real face on makeup, fourth was a re-mask on his face. Well, u can say it's fabric, well i would say it's still a mystery.

  • fail

  • Analbumcoverr, you indeed fail miserably

  • Y dun u say its between his balls, he shakes it so it will somehow float onto his face, all in a sec. Dumbass...

  • this guy is awesome, he doesn't even have a cape

  • in the past, i always thought that the masks were layered one on top of another. But I think it may not be the case...because i have seen before a mask changer, changed a few times of coloured masks, and then revealed his real human face, without any paint on it, and then he changed again to the coloured masks again...lol...its amazing... =)

  • Whats the vid called?

  • Face-changing (变脸)

  • quite suprising how a nation of many people can keep a secret for so long...makes me wonder.

  • was this skill really the china top secret?

  • this is an ancient chinese type of art..it's secrets are not supposed to be shared..it is treated with great respect that' why it remained to be one of the world's greatest type of art.

  • oh, and i almost forget, when i saw it live, at the end of the show, the dude had about 4in of fabric surrounding his neck

  • when i saw it live i tought it was a machine or something (lol) but a day after i saw it i knew i had to find out how this guys do this.

i agree in almost everything all posters say, but it should be something he is able to do without his hands, except the last mask when you can see he gets it from the top of his head

  • shut up stop acting like you know how its done.

  • My dad told me that these dudes use a type of spring operated headgear that triggers the masks via the mouth, at a speed of a camera shutter. But after a dude in china performed it for me at point-blank, i had my doubts.

  • It's definitely not a spring if it's been practiced since ancient china. It's more of an illusion.

  • because of the funny face he makes before the last mask change.

  • this video is so funny

  • why is it funny?

  • very impressive

  • Likewise but in time i guess...

  • I soooo want to find a master to teach me.

  • The illusions rock. These mask guys impress me.

  • I really want to see one of these performances live. My former Chinese dance teacher has a friend who does this, and he said it can be a bit hard to breath under all those masks. o_O

  • I've always thought it was many masks put on in layers... but this clip shows the last mask going on rather than coming off... hmm.

btw I've seen one live. At one point the guy goes into the audience to shake hands. Everyone looks at the hands, then up again and his mask has changed. At another he does this high kick, using his foot to obscure his face for a split second.

  • @h3x4d3cim4l I think (as they generally lightly touch their face, neck or head gear) it might work in catches (like lock and unlock and organize which to release) would make a bit of sense, but I'm not sure :L

  • walahhhh....a clown with many faces..haiiii
