Name of the song and the galloping sound in background reminds the horseback life in wide steppes of southern Russia. I think that's the reason behind the misconception of the song.

This song is like german "geyers schwarzer haufen", it was written in pseudo-folk style for ideological or patriotic purpose. Learn more about cossack singing tradition. You'll never hear there such pathetic lyrics and such marching melodies.
