We save our air for structural fires. Because we're so spread out we aren't able to quickly resupply and the Mask unit only turns out for 3rd alarm or better. If we use it up at a car fire and get something on the way back to quarters we're screwed and so is whoever needs us. That said, if it's a real nasty one throwing a lot of smoke or is anything bigger than a car (van, bus) SCBA should be used. But we have bigger problems than car fires in Brooklyn.
FF not puting PPE on is an old story, but i do think your right, The officers should be held responsible for all his men......................THE CHIEF should just send out a SOP order. SCBA at all fires..............
I am so sick and tired of watching videos of firefighters not wearing the PPE that they are issued and then calling their illnesses job related when they find out they have cancer! Either wear it 100% of the time or sign off on ever complaining that your illness is job related.
@signal99 A guy who wears his SCBA at trash can or brush fires can still get cancer; carcinogens settle on your gear. Not saying you shouldn't protect yourself when you need to but come on; cancer is a risk we all take and should be compensated for if we get it.
I have the outmost respect for the FDNY and am a avid buff, along being a 28 year career FF. I just find it hard the Brothers are not using SCBA's at auto fires.......

@FirstDue Completely agree FirstDue. Carcinogens kill more firefighters than fire does. This is something that should be common knowledge by now.
