@puppynamedmoleson100 Yeah, The fuze was still burning so it impacted the ground and probably drove down in the ground about a few feet then exploded. Its better and more effective when the shell explodes above the ground showering everything below it with shrapnel.
How is it that a solid iron ball explodes? You would need a hollowed ball filled with medium or high explosive most probably a primary "impact sensitive", wouldn't you? And if you have a cannonball that's hollow, how do you fill it without an opening? And if you make an opening, how do you seal it? Finally, how do you keep it from exploding when fired from the cannon?
@PsychoScientist007 A primary explosive would detonate upon firing due to "set back". An iron ball filled with black powder and a time fuze works just fine.
@PsychoScientist007 well the explosive would have been blackpowder or gun cotton in the 1860's and that had a inpact detanator witch plugs the hole that was use to fill the shell
I'll tell you what, these demonstrations bring a whole new dimension to the study of the war. The report of those guns firing live ammo and the whine of the incoming rounds really gives you a chilling sense of what the men had to contend with during a battle. Can you imagine several batteries of these things lobbing shells at you? Must have been horrific, not to mention the results visited upon the intended targets. Truly humbling and awe inspiring.
this was a competetion. back in the 80s at fort mcCoy wisn they don't fire there anymore
but we still do this competetion in camp grayling with out explosive round only solid shot. My team has a orginial 8inch siege mortar and we compete against this group along many others
Would love to see some more recent stuff like this, filmed with an HD cam:)
