Thankyou, finally got a guitar to pick up my self teachings and having trouble with srength and getting my hands to operate independantly. Any tips?? would like to know if theres a way of building my calas's quickly too? There all soft and sore. I love nylon strings but the guitar came with the steels so will wear these out i think, I find it harder but the hard ways always best in my opinion :-)
Thank you for sharing this very important info! After you practice, learn to play, perfect your technique, and build your calluses, you can keep your fingers healthy and prevent callus cracking and tearing with Guitar Hands® Hand Care Here is the website: GUITARHANDSdotcom or check out their Facebook page.
surely this is more of a dexterity exercise than a strength exercise. if you want to build hand strength try playing F or A sharp on a steele string acoustic.
@MCshlthead - It's both. Many exercises that require dexterity, require precise muscle control, coordination, plus muscle memory development. Strength is a part of the formula, because instead of developing just overall strength - it's targeted.
did you make this up in your little mind, son? watch YouTube, there are some guys and girls here who really know what they're doing. continue learning. those that can do, that that can't ... teach.
I don't understand why there are so many videos about guitar speed. There is only ONE way to improve your speed and accuracy. Practicing your scales with a metronome. End of story
@eimaiokalyteros - That's not the only way to do it, and some people are passionate about it, and find it interesting and rewarding to continue to focus on speed and challenging exercises/techniques/licks/riffs.
I dont understand why there is so many training exercise on youtube where people are playing with distortion on. You should NEVER practice with distortion on because you can not hear weather you are hitting the note correctly or not, you should also really be practicing on a nylon acoustic.
@yelmorbdahc I agree with you completely, but don't necessarily agree about the nylons. Although my first guitar was an old classical. For 1 year I didn't have an amp so I practiced through an old record player with no distortion pedal.
Other than the nylon bit, I 100% agree with you about practicing clean. This video I used distortion for demonstration purposes.
@yelmorbdahc Why should you not practice with distortion on? If you're gonna play stuff in the end that has a lot of distortion, and you don't practice with distortion on you might be surprised that once you switch on distortion you're suddenly having all kinds of background noises and stuff which you didn't practice to mute out because you never practiced with distortion on. I also don't understand what distortion should change about the note?
@linuxwave When i say practice i mean scale and hand training things like that because distortion covers up a lot of mistake that you would hear if the distortion wasnt on, but if your learning a "song" where it is played with distortion, then yes practice that song with distortion on. Does that make any sense?
and even mute and harmonic you should practice then clean so you can hear what your actually playing.
@yelmorbdahc I'm not trying to doubt you, but could you please name a few mistakes that would be covered up when practicing scales or whatever with distortion? The only one I could think of at the top of my head is that you aren't able to properly hear if you are fretting the note at the same time while you are hitting the string with your other hand as that might be blurred out by too much distortion.
@linuxwave That exactly right and if you do that to many time you are traning your fingers to to not play the notes right. you need to hear exactly what your finger are doing so you can get it right from the start otherwise you might have trouble down the track, sorry i might not be the best at explaning tthis. ill try and find some reading material for you.
@Starbuckfsd Chill buddy. Check out all of my other videos if you want to learn something. This is a demonstration video. It was featured on my blog, along with the instructions and tablature. It was just a quick excerpt to show my students over there what it looked and sounded like.
The best way to strengthen your fingertips is to use thick strings, and constant playing. Why? Because the tension makes it harder to push down the strings resulting in making yourself put more strength into it. If you're an acoustic player you're already on the good road, I learned the hard way on electric. 9-42 string gauge is like butter, acoustics are most generally using 13-56 gauge, a lot thicker. After a year I can play on 12-60 gauge strings and it doesn't hurt. Just keep working at it
@FollowerofBodom i accidently you could say did that . my brother bought me when i got my new guitar the wrongs strings(very heavy gauge) and i played with these for half a year or something . Everytime i played i had very sore fingertips and you could see the marks of the strings in them :D . now i switched to medium-light strings and i have no problems at all :D YAY
A few years back (in my 20s, now im more than 30) there were times when it looked like Id finally made it, my fingers would really feel independent, I could play scales quite accurately and with speed !! But then after a few days later it was all gone, like starting from zero.
Ive really never been able to play a good solo, I just ended up playing scales ok from time to time and after a lot of frustration when my fingers started failing I would quit. That happened a lot of times.
I have picked up my guitar after a few years and it looks like Ive never played in my life. Ive always struggled with finger independence but now...., I realize I now have a tremor almost impossible to control, when trying to press my fingers all the rest go up and make it impossible to me to fret.Just after several minutes my fingers kind of stop shaking, not completely.
Then slowly im able to fret, with difficulty though. That happened to me in the past but not this bad.
Great Video! Have you ever used the Finger Fitness exercise program that isolates and exercises natural movements of your fingers for better strength, dexterity and coordination?
Yeah i'd have to say my style is more like that, where I ..move up and down with each string as I play. But I would like to start learning how to solo more efficiently using a barre technique so that I can play more of a blues style , perhaps even incorporate better fills for my jazz or spanish solos.
I would suggest working with minor and major 7th barre chords, and using your middle, ring and pinkie fingers to move notes around while your index finger holds down the barre. Look at flamenco guitar players - this makes up a pretty good amount of their playing. Major+minor 7th barres would work with the pentatonic scales, or you could use Dorian with minor 7th barre chords. Hammer ons and pull offs sound good with barres too.
Haha, I guess I never thought about doing that before, but I will most certainly do it. If I teach the intro then I'll be able to teach everyone about layering guitar solos.
To figure it out? maybe not long - pay attention to where my hand could be on the fretboard, but if you get tired of trying to figure it out - I think the tablature for the lesson is at GuitArticles still.
I'm sorry, sir - if you are unhappy you can most certainly take the time to check out my other instructional videos. Some of which are so long that I had to cut them down to 3 parts. I have one series that is 4 parts = 40 minutes of free guitar instruction that I would charge any student $45 for. That way you can get more bang for your invisible buck - please do not look a gift horse in the mouth - thank you.
when you demo the fast lick you forgot to use your 3rd finger....
