hey guys! i just made a video of me tying a fly and i would love if you checked it out! i will be making new videos soon of me fishing, come check my videos out!
this has been my second attempt at tying a fly, it was a smashing success, I bought a starter kit that had a book with it, but that was not very helpfull, so I tried to just wing it...lol it didnt turn out horrible, but certainly not as well as this one has, thank you very much for this and i will be watching, and learning more.
thanks, Dave! thanks to you, I've just tied my first 2 flies, both of this pattern. i made one small change, and added some white hair at the eye to look like breathing filaments. thanks again, Josh
As someone new to flyfishing I was lucky to find a instructor who demistified getting the equipment and casting; now I have discovered your videos which have done the same for fly tying Thanks to Dave and the Team
Just bought a used danvise and portable Orvis tying work center and was hoping for some good intro videos. Yours are wonderful. You have a patience and steady teaching method that is great. Thanks for being so generous with your talents. Can't wait to try tying some of your flies.
All I can say is thank u so much I watch all your vid I got to say your vid are one of the best flie tying vids on yubetube and u tout me how to fly tye and I love it I can tye many different kind of flies now thanks to u thank u very much
Just received my first fly tying kit in the mail last night, and this was the first fly I tied this morning. I am now forever hooked on fly tying. Looking forward to attempting your other patterns. Thanks a million!
Thanks Dave, I have tied a few flies & I`m glad to see you use half hitches to finish instead of that awkward knot in most books, Thanks again & Tight lines.
Although I now am past the beginners stage in fly tying I do still occasionally pull up one or the other of your instructional tying videos. Originally I watched them to acquire some of the foundations for tying. Now I find them extremely relaxing despite of the great puzzle of your finishing knots. The manual whip finishing at one time was also a bit of a problem for me, but your finishing knots will probably remain unsolveable forever for me.
I got into fly tying once, bought all the equipment, and after making a few jigs, I stopped for some reason. Thank god these videos exist as a refresher, thanks!
I am returning to fly tying after many years away from it. I was crap at it before!. What I am really gettin gfrom this series of videos is not "how to tie a pattern" which is useful - but you can get that from a book, its the technique- watching how Dave tears off a bit of hackle for instance. Mines always fell to bits until i watched these vids. Watch his fingers. What a difference it makes.
@soundiscomforting Its varnish he uses to secue the knot at the head of the fly.
Hi. I just got a new fly tying starter kit and the bobbin holder is too tight. The tension is WAY too hight. I have to break the line to get some out. As far as i can see there is no way to loosen it. Any sugguestions?
Brilliant David! Thanks for sharing this. I love the story on the 'About Me' section of your website. I'm new to fly tying but can't wait to buy a selection of tools and materials and have a go myself!
Thankyou for the lesson. I am just a teenager fresh out of highschool but a few years ago out of bordom i stated tying flies and it became a quick passion for me. I have flyfishing equiptment but cant cast to save my life. So i sell my flies and troll with them. Since watching this video moments ago i realised what that little unlabeled bottle of fluid and my bodkin was for. Now my flies wont come undone as easily. And now i can use a half hitch knot as well. Mostly i use a whip finisher.
Thank so much i have only just started to fly fish but i can put a decent cast togeather now. After watching the clip that you did about the gold head nymph i caught my first grayling and wild browny on it.It give's you a real buzz knowing that you have tricked a wild fish that has never seen a rearing pen on something that you tied your self thanks again.Mr m.p.ellis
If this guy built a rocket ship and flew to the moon I would be his co-pilot. Did you hear the details he rattles off in this video? Amazing and lots of experience obviously. 5 Stars!!
thank you i'm 15 years old just tied to fly first one was a fail just the second one turned out really well. thank you great video really easy to follow. A*
Great Video I just finished my first fly, a zebra midge and your video helped understand the basic techniques. I think I need to get a large magnifying glass though, at 57 the eyes don't work very good even with glasses. Thanks very much
i must admit very impressive im actually thinking about getting started in this kind of hobby it just seems kinda hard and challenging with all the possibilities does anyone think this can be self taught with videos like this cause i dont know anybody that ties flies and i live in florida were fishing is plentiful
you should deffinately start fly tying...it is hard to tie dry flys at first and they are a little expensive to get started in but start out with nymphs and streamers and you will be tying store quaility if not better phesant tail nypmhs in maybe 1 month
oh yea id say it could be self taught...i learned how to cast properly by watchin fly cstin vids....im gonna start fly tying once i buy a vise. my plan was hook vise to comp desk n watch vid while tyin the fly. it would be like him teachin u personally lol
Yeah fly tying can be self taught with the videos and books available. I'm learning as well and the videos help alot. you just have to jump right in and try to find a local fly shop if you can.
On a whim I thought I would type in a search for fly tying and this video came up. I knew absolutely nothing about fly tying but I am very impressed with your skill and craftsmanship in this video series. Very good work!
hey man i'm 13 and as you can see no lie from my videos. i started tying when i was 12. and trust me it is an expensive hobby. i got a starter kit with a 40 dollar vise and a month later in Canada for a fly fishing trip i got a great deal, 50 bucks for a 200 vise down here. but my whoel set up is prolly 400 bucks with feathers and everything. and i'm not even half done with my collection of materials.
hello there david. i posted a comment a few weeks bak regarding your excellent videos. since then i have had great sucess with the cats wisker patten in lesson five. i am also a keen carp angler and im hoping to use my fly rod and line to catch one. couly you do a video on tying dog biscuit imitations? please please. keep up the good work

I have been toying with the idea of tying my own flies for a while . Dave's videos are just what I want to give me the confidence to do so.Plain language and obviously years of experience make Mr.Camiss a great teacher.
great video! I am really interested in beginning fly tying an this video taught me alot. One question though. What is the easiest nott to tie that finishes the fly? One that won't come loose. Thanks for the video!!
Thank you for your video, Ive been trying to learn Fly tying for a while now, My brother helped me start the one your doing, And i just finished it a few hours ago. I cant wait to try it out! :)
Thanks for your comments. It is so good to know that I can inspire others to take up my favourite past-time. Remember practice makes perfect and there is always more than one way to solve any problem.
I've been wanting to try tying for sometime, but wasn't sure where to start. I found your videos, started watching several and it was so inspiring I went out last night and purchased the materials to start, and tied a few flies this morning. Thanks so much, your videos are so helpful. I look forward to trying all the flies you've shown at some point.
Very informative. Im actually looking to start tying some flies. I went into a store I really enjoy to look for a job and he said the only thing he needs is someone who can tie flies, so of course I said I would work on it. If you have any tips or anything that would be great! Also, what size wire is that, and where can I pick up most of the stuff I need other than the vise and bobbin?
All you videos are great help and I appreciate you taking time to do so. I was wondering a good size to use for the sun fish and crappie in the local sportsmans lake. Thank you again!
I have been tying for 60yrs. tied flies on all types and sizes of hooks and have had only a handful break at the point. debarbing, which I do, can cause more breaks.

Very nice instruction. I was taught that putting the hook inside the vise jaws could cause a fracture of the hook point behind the barb as some good quality hooks are tempered at that point. If you don't break the point in the vise, it can break off during a fish hook up. Have you ever experienced this?
Thanks man, Im gonna tie my own fly soon(later today after hw). I think i should get the award for "most ghetto fly evermade". Im using a carls jonior cup for my vice and a bent antenna and a pen tube for that silver thing that u used to spin thread around the hook. Ill let you know how it goes!
