Gustavo, i'm so glad to see you posting again. When your videos pop up in my feed it always puts me in a pleasant mood. I hope your holidays went well and i look forward to seeing more from you in the future.
Lovely Savinelli there Gustavo, if I ever get one it would be that shape! I've hear it also referred to as an "Author". All four of those pipes are wonderful choices, I'm really thinking about purchasing a Blakemar for my collection. I'd love to try that Portuguese liquor! I'll have to see If I can track some down here. That topping on the Stonehaven is beautiful stuff. Its been a mystery to me, something akin to apricot is all I can associate it with. Good to see you sir!
@astroman2112 Hi James. The 320 is an author shape, for sure. Maybe you can find some ginginha in a big liquor store, or in a portuguese store, if such thing exists in Bangkok. Inside the bottle there's always 20 to 30 sour cherries, and tipycally one is served inside every glass. In a little medieval town near me, which I will someday record a video about, it's served in chocolate glasses which are obviously eaten afterwards.
I was surprised by your top 3, knowing your existing tastes. I haven't tried any of the three mentioned. I have tried Bosun and it is a real lakeland perfume. I wonder if the Germains dark flake and special latakia flake are close to the Esoterica blends you mentioned, as some in the Uk have said. I am 100% behind you with the Opening Night. It was my real revelation of the year. I could actually just spend hours with it with my nose in the tin! Hopefully 8oz of it on it's way here soon!
@SpainPipe Hi Alan. According to Dean, RDF and Stonehaven are indeed the same. Opening Night surprised me as a very mature and tasty virginia. It's now on top of my american made wish list.
Ginjinha sounds lovely, as does your description of Penzance. I would have to agree that Penzance does leave much too early. I often find myself going back for a second, or even a third bowl in order to satiate my craving.
Hi Gustavo, I love my Savinelli's. Always great smokers.
I have tried Stonehaven and RDF side by side and could not detect any great difference. I put the tiny difference down to the S'Haven being older whereas the RDF was fresh and the casing a little stronger. In fact I am smelling them both right now and in the bags they smell identical.
I have yet to try Penzance. I am smoking less and less Latakia now, I don't know why as I do enjoy it.
@dohngl Great to know that RDF is indeed the Stonehaven stuff. Neil sent some RDF to Bruno, several months ago, and Bruno passed a few bowls to me, for comparing with Stonehaven and I must say I found the RDF had no smell... probably it was just too aired out and already dry.
That is a beautiful Savinelli, i must confess, i have never had one! It will change one day im sure though! Those tobaccos do sound lovely! Enjoy the UF and the penzance! All the best, Johnny
@Yorkshirepipensnuff In their price range, I believe Savinelli to be the best choise (I like it better than Stanwell, but that's maybe very subjective). Savinelli's customer service is also amazing... I recently asked the italian factory to replace the stem of my Punto Oro and they've sent the pipe back without asking for no money, not even the shipping cost. Top customer's satisfaction!
Good review my friend, Stonehaven is fantastic we call it rich dark flake in the uk and Penzance is called krumble kake both made by JF Germain in jersey take care~mark
@pipesmoker1969 Hi, Mark. I've had some RDF and found it not the same as Stonehaven, but would love to see somebody else comparing those offer from JF Germain's with the ones from Esoterica.
I have a Savinelli Goliath. It's a quality piece of briar, but I'm a bit disappointed by the draw on it.
Enjoy that University Flake, it's a favorite of mine.
Also, how is the Hardcastle? I've been wanting to get one as they are beautiful looking pipes. And being that they are Dunhill seconds, I've always assumed they would be good smokers, but I've never heard a review.
@SatelliteHeartTrans Hardcastle were Dunhill's seconds (or thirds, to be more exact) only during a brief period, all the rest is just marketing talk. Recent Hardcastles have nothing to do with Dunhill and are completely machine made (although I have a recent one which smokes very well). Best Hardcastles should be from previously 1967, the year they were incorporated by Dunhill. They are very hard to date though.
I very much enjoy your videos Gustavo. Well thought out and delivered. I would love to try both Stonehaven and Penzance sometime, but they are so hard to get your hands on these days. You were talking about Stonehaven being a very silky smoke - Beck's Ol' Limey Bastard is that way for me. Very nice, smooth and creamy smoke. Thanks for the great video. Cheers!
@MojoMilt Thank you, Frank. The special thing about Stonehaven's smoothness is it's not creamy at all, but really silky instead... a unique "beast" among all the tobaccos I've tried.
Thanks for sharing the 2011 summary Gustavo! "settling year" is a great way to describe the period when one stops going "wide", and concentrate on going "deep" in the exploration of pipes and tobacco. I have yet to experience the excellence of the Esoterica offerings and it's a pity that you can't find them here in Europe.
@Flieger671 I'm still to be sure if JF Germain's offerings for the european market have the exact same tobaccos... I've tried Rich Dark Flake and my impressions were it was not exactly the same as Stonehaven. Our british friends Tim, Neil and Dean should have a better opinion about that.
@ADzPipes The 320 shape is utterly popular for a good reason... they're very nice to hold and smoke. I don't know if it's made in the Opera grade, which should be all black, but I guess the Trevi grade is all black too. If I spot one, word will be sent.
@bluepipesmoker Hi Andreas. Enjoying good pipes and tobaccos is not my exclusive fault... next time you're with Tim, please charge him a proper beer for bad influence on me! :)
@GTFiorano That's exactly the opposite of what I'll be doing, my friend. Lately I've been watching many of your videos and, althoug not leaving comments, want you to know I've been much enjoying them.
@HolySmokeNPipePadre Hello, Senhor Padre, and thank you for stopping by. I have many of your videos to catch upon, but expect 2012 to be a excellent year to us all.
Great choices. I have recently tried stonehaven and do enjoy it. However, I have been fortunate enough to get a sample of '05 Penzance that is as you say 'Divine'. I find myself looking for my biggest bowls when I smoke that tobacco.
Beautiful pipes and big names on those tobaccos! from those I've only tired Penzanse, and I love it! Cheers, Harvey
