Yes, if GH:WT detects a RB drumkit, it will compress the orange and green notes together so that the chart will fit.

You're best off using a RB kit for both, because using the GH:WT kit in RB will probably feel very weird, hitting a yellow cymbal and it makes a tom noise, or hitting a orange cymbal for your bass pedal.

I read on the rockband forums a few weeks ago that rockband equipment is compatible on guitar hero but not the other way around. at least the guitar anyway.

Nonono. Guitar Hero equipment is compatible on Rock Band. I don't know about the other way around. I don't think so. However, things may be different for RB2 equipment. Who knows.
