  • GOD BLESS YOU DAVID..4 EVR

  • my favourite movie 'Shine' and my favourite pianist David Helfgott...I work with people with mental health problems...and sometimes I think...they are more normal than others...I like them and understand them because they are against this world...

  • Love him.

  • I've seen The Film 500 times and only now I saw the real David and only now I understood what an exceptional actor Geoffrey Rush IS. . .

  • i feel like i relate almost directly to David because not only am i a pianist (though im more like a pianist-in-the-making), but i had a nervous breakdown several years ago and it was diagnosed schizoaffective. I know how much of a nightmare mental illness can be, not being able to think right and being incapable of trust or emotional stability. But i also know how awesome it is to overcome and realize you're not alone. Most composers had serious issues, but are among the greatest geniuses!

  • What a man! What a genuis! What a personality! Love you David Helfgott!!!

  • Amazing that he could overcome mental illness to be able to play to this standard - sad that others, who should know better, think him gifted.

    He's a butcher, musically speaking.

Am I not allowed to say that, because he's 'special'?

  • @TheEnglishViking1 of course you can say that, you don't have to say it like a pompous prick like that, but it's worth letting others know he doesn't actually play the piece to the standard that others can

  • @TheEnglishViking1 What exactly are your credentials to call him a "butcher musically speaking" Are you a classically trained pianist? Have you ever seen David in concert? have you heard him play Balakirev's Islamey? You don't form your opinions based only on what you hear on poor quality Youtube recordings do you?

  • What an amazing man.

  • A Beautiful Mind

  • To play like this is a gift from God, he has brightened up a lot of lives, he inspires me to keep playing and teaching music.

  • What a treat to see the real David after being enthralled by Shine. Mental illness?? I think the real mentally ill are those that sound normal but have no soul and float through life in a fog putting others down. David is one of my heroes.

  • Madnessman iv got google to,"sounds choppy" straight of wiki you tit

  • @Madnessonman Regardless of his ability, many people will continue to enjoy his recitals because he has demonstrated an ability to overcome adversity.

  • @Madnessonman you have a clear lack of understanding of what 'music' is. Fail.

  • @Madnessonman You simply cannot say that ! He is undoubtedly a phenomonal pianest! Whats the matter with you!

  • @Madnessonman Oh shut the fuck up, hater.

  • @Madnessonman well, if youre better probe it, or just shut the fuck up. asshole

  • @Madnessonman No, I like his playing because it taps an emotionally wellspring deep inside me, I really don't care what is PC or un-PC, that is more of a vacuous generation Y thing. "His bullshit life"? compared to what exactly. I've seen this man play live and he is an excellent musician. You have listened to a heavily edited, poor quality Youtube recording, I recommend that you go and see David in concert, you will not forget it.

  • it's so soothing to hear him play

  • Anyone else notice she said, "Now he tours all the time. This week Christchurch, next week Japan."

    Coincidence?

  • Number One David Helfgot .God Bless You .

  • I have only just watched the film Shine and it was overwhelming! David is an outstanding pianist and thanks to the love of Gillian, he came back to life thank goodness. He is a pleasure to listen to.

  • True genious.

  • lo veo, y no puedo creer la perfección de Geoffrey Rush en la pelicula Shine... increíble!!

  • His music is truly alive. Better by miles than all the sterile crap one usually hears in this century. I think David is fantastic.

  • He freestyle raps like eminem, they should do a duet

  • David is phenomenal! What talent! What an inspiration!

  • Wow, what a pianist. I can't understand people who say he can't play, that his music doesn't show emotion. I think they know zilch about classical music, that's what. Very inspiring to finally watch and listen to David play long after I got hooked on Shine and many more years than that after I fell in love with Rach 3. What a journey - not finished yet, I hope!

  • This is stunning....how incredibly inspirational!

  • Just got back from seeing him perform, and i thought his murmuring was someone in the crowd being rude for a while, he was amazing, my favorite piece was La Campanella.

  • Geoffrey Rush and Olympia Dukakis were the actors in the movie, right?

  • @annerudolph I think it was Geoff Rush and Vanessa Redgrave.

  • @DiamondGeezerDude She was Lynn Redgrave, another extraordianry actress

  • @Eudora74 Yes! Absolutely. It was Lynn. So many Redgraves! She was brilliant in the film and a true star of stage and screen. Shine - Australia's best ever film. Loved every single second of it. The entire cast were excellent.

  • This guy is my idol. I understand him very well.

  • Zwei Menschen die sich gefunden haben,Gott segne sie.....

  • What an extraordinary individual!! The world could do with many, many more Davids & Gillians!!!

  • @lionsome You're so lucky!!! What a great experience

  • Wow... Now I realize how amazing geoffrey Rush is as an actor. He really studied the character

  • @eowyna88 The sad thing is that many people will not realise what a genius Geoffrey Rush is until he is dead. The good thing is that both Helfgott and Rush are Australians proving that the flower does bloom in the desert. (I am slightly biased here)

  • What a cute couple they are. So glad God made them for each other, like two halves brought together to make something whole.

  • @juliabohemian God didn't do anything.

  • Can this man live forever please

  • The piece his playing in the opening of this video is Un Sospiro by Liszt.

  • He's seriously good. He'd probably be a normal person if they haven't done shock therapy on him. Regardless, he's brilliant. Nothing can change that.

  • He kind of looks like a younger, but modern-day Rudolph Serkin.

  • They really could not have made a better choice of actor to portray Helfgott than Rush.

  • geoffry rush was OERFECT for the part in shine, he even looks like david!!!

  • The story of David Helfgott is really touching and he's a gift of nature so to say... David please never die.

  • his wife is lovely

  • shine

  • Madre de Dios, Rush lo personifico tal cual, son dos gotas de agua jjjj q emoción! llore toda la pelicula, amo la música, amo la vida, dios bendiga a este genio

  • MAGNIFIKT!!!!!!!<3<3<3<3<3

  • I wish i could play a single note like him, and most of all u wish i could see the world the way he does as a Genius !!

  • He is not "ill", WE are.

  • I wonder if he ever tried smoking weed to relax his mind. Serious thought.. heh

  • @PeicyP yeh cos im sure that would improve his mental illness lol

  • @PeicyP Its better for him that he doesn't smoke weed or else he'll be like you which is worse than any mental sickness.

  • um. thanks. . seems you're already worse than what you think me to be. There's nothing wrong with smoking weed. He seems to have a racing mind.. Medical usage of marijuana is not only for physical pain, but for mental disorders as well. Plus.. it's better than taking a bunch of prescription medicine (don't know if he does. But that's besides the point). Thanks for the kind words though. Not that I care what another human being thinks.. since I believe all humans are mostly shit to begin with.

  • @PeicyP Well said.

  • Walking contradictions like you. "The Serenity Angel" .. lol. K. Bye. -.-

  • @PeicyP You must be on high when you said that. Its pardonable.

  • @TheSerenityangel Seems your name doesnt exactly match your personality.

  • @Soulisscool Shakespeare said, "What's in the name?"

  • what a lovely couple :)

  • he doesnt suffer anymore... its fair...

  • a genius.... an incredible genius.

  • this guy is so cool

  • God bless David and Gillian. People who do not understand mental illness or don't bother to learn about it are just plain ignorant. David is a genius and magnificent musician. He can't help how his brain is affected. Have compassion, people!

  • I hope you read the book: Love you to Bits and Pieces: Life with David Helfgott

I'd love to know what you think of it!

  • @ckmiller66

I thinkt the tribute movie Shine is damn moving... And yes he IS a magnificent musician :)

I dont know him.. but he seems to have also an awesome personallity :)

    Long live David Helfgott!

  • @ckmiller66 I'm sure he's better now and he is healing =)

  • @ckmiller66 Oh my goodness. I had a studio professor who used to chatter and make strange noises when he played. That added to my fright of pursuing a career in performing.

  • @ckmiller66 Maybe you should look up just exactly how bad Gillian wants you to think that.

  • @ckmiller66 Well said!! I love David Helfgott too always wanted to see him but I fear he doesn't travel America too often.

  • wow, I respect Geoffry Rush so much more now.. what an uncanny job. He's was so much like him..

  • Everyone should follow their passion

and read biographies to learn how others love thier passions

  • watt an amazin piece xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • I only wish that the Mundaring Weir Hotel wouldnt have David play up there in the stinking hot month of February. I couldn`t watch SHINE, as it reminded me too much of my own childhood at the hands of a violent father.

  • what does he play after 0:37 ?? it sounds lovely

  • It's Schubert's E flat impromptu Op90 no 2

  • I feel for this man. God Bless him.

  • I disagree with the comment saying that he's not concert pianist material. I just finished watching "Shine," and to be honest, I don't buy the story at all. The film is great, especially with the impressive performance of Geoffrey Rush portrayed as adult David, but the story of David's life is painfully shallow and exaggerating. What I dislike the most is the way it represents the relationship between David and his father; however, I do think David is a terrific concert pianist.

  • paruss55: a lot of famous people are "mentally ill"; you have to be just a little crazy to be in a world like this.

Davis Helfgott IS a genius and an inspiration; and he is an amazing pianist

  • i suggest to anyone who wants to know the connecion betwen the brain/ mental illness and music, read Musicophilia by oliver sacks. its a great read.

and long live david helfgott!! brilliant man.

    :)

  • gorgeoussssssssss

  • The man is brilliant. I've seen him live a number of times and always so impressed with him. If you listen carefully, you can hear him talking to himself all through every piece :-) A mad genius.

  • there is no genius without a bit of madnes...

  • @RoZyk007 my thought exactly.I thought to myself while watching the movie: You cannot touch thousands of souls and minds, without being spirirually and mentally different yourself

  • hahahaha after he finishes playing-

    *THATS TOPS THUMBS UP* hehehehe

  • What an utter legend!

  • So talented. Such dedication. Can't wait to see him in Adelaide this Saturday night.

  • Terrific pianist...can't wait to hear him play this sunday!!!

  • Wow

  • amazing

  • His artistry, his live, his within beauty-

    for me it's amazing.

  • such an interesting and unique fellow

  • MAN change the title, it is misleading and shocking! For a moment i thought that the famous pianist will be fighting in the UFC... let's be honest, he doesn't have a chance now.

  • hilarious.

  • I'm getting piano lessons in September and I hope to be like him at playing piano. I watched the film last night how he plays is amazing, astonishing. I hope to go and see him live one day. He doesn't even have to look at the keys. He is brilliant! Right now I'm in year 7 and learning When the Saints go marching in.

  • my god, I never realized how spot on Geoffrey Rush was

  • I KNOW

  • Thank God that he found that wonderful wife and help him track his life and his music again

  • He's almost as good at playing David Helfgott as Geoffrey Rush....

  • Lol.

  • @Metrader That's funny. This was a nice clip.

You know, I think it is not as uncommon as people would think, to have had an abusive piano teacher. Some teacher's who find that they have a "gifted" student tend to get a kind of Napoleon Complex, and see that child as the potential they themselves did not have, but they feel the need to live vicariously through the student. As a result, the student can be a victim of the narcissistic exploits of the teacher. It's a very difficult life.

  • @TheCatholicFaithfu

    Hiya

Im a violinist. As an 8 year old, my father made me practice all the time, he would sit there listening to me, "no, again", he would shout...

Only now I realise, he wanted me to be amazing at violin. Funny that, I remember that - "No, start again",

    But he was never cruel,

  • @Metrader Oh, that's quite a different thing then. When you have a teacher, who treats you less than a trained monkey, forces you do think of nothing else than practicing to the detriment of your school work and your health, then I would say that teacher is abusive. If, when you win recognition or awards your teacher puts you down that you don't really deserve even the recognition from the professional judges, then I'd say that teacher is abusive. The name calling is another story.

  • ,,,,,I just saw the movie,,,when I watch this clip the actor play him perfect also that is true love right there,,,,,can you see that,,,,,that,s one lucky man that,s what true love is ,,,watch her & him,,,,again,,,,,see

  • his movie shine is so good!!! He is a musical genius

  • he sort of sounds like he has Wernickes Aphasia

  • The author of this video deleted my extremely honest and unoffensive comment. Lets see if he deletes this.

  • the comment was that he is famous for his eccentricities not his musical ability.

  • All the best to David and his wife. I love love and I'm so glad he found it. "Shine" is one of the all time great films too.

  • what a mind!

  • the guy is amazing and it's good to see him touring and in a happy relationship with someone that takes time listen .I hope to see him someday

  • paganiniGOGO, I bet you can play like Helfgott huh? Since he is only famous for his "eccentricities"...I bet you are are only famous for your ridiculous comments, huh? LOL

  • Wow, you really embarrassed me with that comment. Your English is REALLY good!! That comment was very clever, you should write for David Letterman.

I guess you're right about how I can't have an opinion on music unless I am a world renowned musician.

I suppose I jumped to an absurd conclusion after comparing Helfgott to other pianists of equal skill and realizing that for some reason he was much more famous.

    .

  • both of them i think, but i agree he is famous to mush about his eccentricities, but he is far to be alone is this cathegory

  • i remember this guy

i met him at the coffs harbour airport when i was like 6 with my lil cousion

he bought me and her like heaps of lollies

  • all I have done is repeating what my friend told me about her meeting with Geoffrey Rush.

  • Ok, so your friend's experience is above actual FACT and REALITY then, eh? Hey, my friend told me that the moon is made out of cheese. The moon told him so. FACTS. REALITY. TRUTH. You may want to pursue these things.

  • and keep using your sock accounts to thumbs down my comments, ahahaha.

  • Maulcs: Do you really think that a professional actor would not learn anything for a role? Joaquin Phoenix learned how to play guitar for his role as Johnny Cash. These are professional actors who really learn as mush as they can to play a role.

Again: when my friend saw him (geoffrey) Geoffrey played piano for the entire crowd; I just asked my friend today to be sure

  • maulcs: If I could comment on anything in your comment; Yes mime through the parts he couldn't play; that means he must have played some parts; and you don't know which parts and you don't know how much he played, right? So who is the DUMASS? You? or me who has a friend who have met Geoffrey Rush in real life.

  • How can Geoffrey talk about the movie telling how he played. I never said he played during the entire movie; NEVER.

When my friend met him he also played piano in front of all people. He said that when he played during the movie it was very easy for him; it floated out of him.

Do my research? My friend MET Geoffrey; what more research do you want?

If someone should do research it should be u.

I can't take u serious when you write like that. Grow up the we can discuss again

  • What horrible language. Grow up.

  • You're the one who needs to grow up. He is mentally ill.

  • Who's mentally ill? Helfgott? I know he is; I was talking about a guy who posted a comment on this video that was riddled with obscenities - THAT guy needed to grow up.

  • Watching this I have a new appreciation for just how well Geoffry Rysh brought David Helfgott to life on the big screen. Amazing!!!!

  • David, the world and the stars love you!

  • congratulations David !!!

  • he's amazing.i just love him.

    watch the movie "shine".

  • I just finished watching Shine, and i am mouth open, he is just a genius and sadly a stoped human being (by the excessive father`s love), and yes he must keep shining to keep back his mental and emotional health. I`m glad that lady married him and still helping. God has his misteriuos ways.

  • I just watched this click after watching the movie "Shine". Congratulations on 24 years of marriage. I "love" love. Go David.

  • Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini 18th Variation

  • Does anyone know the name of the piece he is playing when u see his red shoes?

  • its the 18th variation from Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini

  • Huge inspiration to me.

  • You are a genius David!!

  • Fabulous talent, and i think he's wearing David Caradine's top from the 70's series 'Kung Fu'.

  • Personally i think he does the best version of Liszt's Un sospiro, and certainly is an absolute best performer. The whole matter of complaining is just time-wasting, people are still listening to him play live

  • shine teaches you to avercome all obstacles and stand up for what you believe in

  • He is such a precious precious man, God bless you David.

  • He is healthy, and I am very happy!

  • Wiccan78, did you see Rush receiving his award for his role as Helfgott at the end of the movie? That was awesome. Rush is one of my favorite actors and yes, he really was playing the piano. Helfgott and Rush are two of those people I'd love to have lunch with. :)

  • why do someone give me minus on my comment about Geoffrey Rush playing the piano himself in the movie Shine??? Tell me why, please.

He did play the piano himself :)

He was in Denmark once where he told about the movie and how to play the piano

  • He's definately the Herman Li of piano...

  • Professional or not in his concert, we cannot deny that he is SO naturally gifted in his play...

  • By the way Geoffrey played the piano himself in the movie :D

  • No, he didn't. Moron.

  • oh god you are so naive. Geoffery was in Denmark talking about the movie.

My friend saw and heard him live; heard Rush talking about the movie and talking about paying the piano himself.

A lot of actors learn to play an instrument for a movie.

  • No, he worked as a "hand double". He MIMED the playing, you stupid motherfucking DUMBASS. Go lookup it up. My God.

  • "He reacquainted himself with the piano, which he'd studied at school, and used his vast experience in mime to get through the parts he couldn't actually play. He was perfect for the role." You actually thought he could play Liszt? AHAHAHA. Fucking ignorant DUMBASS.
