The story of Laika is probably one of the most saddest and forgotten stories of aerospace and aviation history. Without Laika, the Soviets could have ot developed the world's first SST the Tu-144 a precursor to the Concorde. They did'nt know back then that conventional avaition material can be used for such high speeds that exceeds the thermal thicket. Laika was sadly incinerated from the speed and friction. Speeds of Mach 3 with conventional material can vaporize any fuel and broil the pilot.

Laika was the first creature ever shot into space. She was a dog put aboard Sputnik II.

Actually, she was the first dog to make and Orbital mission. There were a plethora of sub-orbital missions prior to the ill-fated lauching of Laika.
