To me, this sounds more like it belongs in an early Sega Genesis or TurboGrafx-16 game. Are there any NES titles that you would suggest if you wanted to compare audio with this song?

There's a lot of the Konami sampling going here. So the Contra series, Castlevania III, Jackal, and many other similar era Konami titles would likely have a similar sound (though my remix here is lazy by comparison to some of those great tunes). Other games like Magician and Journey to Silius would be good examples.
