My rats are in love with me. Rats are in love with humans. They are basically small dogs with long tails. My rats go crazy when they see me. I want to say some thing to snake owners. Please, never feed rats to a snake. Would you feed a dog or a cat to a snake? Isn't there a better alternative?

@yeshitstiffany That's normal, I went through it every time I added a rat to my group of females. Don't worry about it, they will eventually be friends, and cuddle together to sleep. It might take a couple months though!

I have never owned any mice, but I'm searching through some websites about mice atm and iIf I were you I would keep only females, as I read that there is a chance that males remain aggressive towards other males and still would try to breed with females (especially when neutered at a later age) Of course the females wouldn't get pregnant, but they would get very stressed if these males would constantly try to mate with them.
@MiboJinNoYuwaku Yeah the males are quite aggressive. I have 12 males all within four separate cages. Each cage has the males from the one litter, yet they fight at times and fight over food. But I prefer the males to the females, I find the females to be not as friendly as the males. I asked my Vet about neutering and he said there is a possibility but the procedure itself could possibly kill the mouse. So is it really worth it? I don't think so /: Thanks for the help (:
@BumbleeXBee No that's definitely not worth it :( They're so tiny and fragile! An average male rat weighs about 500 gram (I even had one that weighed 800 grams) and what does a male mouse weigh? About 70 grams...That really increases the risks when doing such a procedure. yw ^___________^

sfrance783, actually pet rats are a lot cleaner than most people think... most people, when you mention rats, think of sewer rats and plague and stuff, but that's because those are wild animals, just like pigeons or wild dogs or feral cats, which are also notorious for carrying fleas and diseases. But the existence of wild dogs and feral cats does not stop people from getting pet dogs and cats. Domestic animals (including rats) are always cleaner than their wild counterparts.

I found a bunch of baby rats and a big rat that looked like it was hungry and had bald spots...I took em to the vet and the vet said they were fancy rats and I could pick one to keep for free!!!! I picked the old one and once I had him for about 4 minutes he was at perfect health.....2 months later Cupcake died of cancer I never found a rat that gave me as much attention as Cupcake did.....but he will live on forever in our hearts

@mandyajel Even though I've never owned a rat I did a lot of research. I can give you advice. Males tend to scent-mark a lot, so they smell badly, but they are more relaxed and like to cuddle. Females, they love to explore and get into trouble. I'm not saying that males won't do the same though ;3 Basically, its based on taste.

@mandyajel I would recommend for a first time rat owner that you go with females. Males are great to have, too, but females tend to have fewer behavioral problems. It's much more rare for females to get in major fights. However, females are more prone to tumors (if you don't get them fixed, which you should).

I just got my two rats. The first rats I ever had and they are too cute. I could tell they wouldn't be like normal small rodent pets because as soon as I pet them on the first day they move right into my hand! And they aren't afraid of my dog at all, they come up to him! Rats are great pets, and you have such a great rat den!
@jorats It is a bad way to hold a rat. Not if you pick them up like that for a few seconds but holding it for any longer like that can hurt the rats back.

what would u say are the best gender to get for rats? male or females? im looking into getting a couple of rats and wonder for a first time rat owner?!

@mandyajel Even though I've never owned a rat I did a lot of research. I can give you advice. Males tend to scent-mark a lot, so they smell badly, but they are more relaxed and like to cuddle. Females, they love to explore and get into trouble. I'm not saying that males won't do the same though ;3 Basically, its based on taste.

Our females climbed all over us, groomed our hair and stuff. So, if you like a guinea pig personality, go with male, if you like active you go with females.

@mandyajel I would recommend for a first time rat owner that you go with females. Males are great to have, too, but females tend to have fewer behavioral problems. It's much more rare for females to get in major fights. However, females are more prone to tumors (if you don't get them fixed, which you should).

I just got my two rats. The first rats I ever had and they are too cute. I could tell they wouldn't be like normal small rodent pets because as soon as I pet them on the first day they move right into my hand! And they aren't afraid of my dog at all, they come up to him! Rats are great pets, and you have such a great rat den!

@jorats It is a bad way to hold a rat. Not if you pick them up like that for a few seconds but holding it for any longer like that can hurt the rats back.
