  • I don't think Chrisitna Crawford had any reason to make up "Mommie Dearest". I believe it 100%. Joan was a great actress, and when she wanted to be nice, I'm sure she can be an amazing person to have a drink with at the bar and gab about Hollywood. But the truth remains, she was a well known alcoholic. And alcohol mixed with a large ego and bad situations usually does not end well. And if Christina did blackmail her mother, wouldn't it have made more sense to keep her in the will to shut her up?

  • I love Joan's hair, it's so classic of the '60s and looks beautiful.

  • Nice to see the mean old bitch had a good sense of humor. Don't know if she was really

an unfit mother, but she was certainly Hollywood Royalty for many years.

  • @JOJO22858 She was actually a very nice woman. As far as the unfit mother allegation, she cut two of her kids out of her will before she died. That kind of tells you something....

  • I love her!!!!!

  • joan is a beautifull human being ,theres no need say mean things about her

  • Crawford's best friend, actress Eve Arden, sided with Christina about Crawford's parenting abilities, saying that Crawford suffered from bipolar disorder; a good woman in many ways but, as an alcoholic with a violent temper, simply unfit to be a mother. In the book Understanding the Borderline Mother, author Christine Ann Lawson suggests that Joan Crawford may have had Borderline personality disorder (BPD) along with an obsessive compulsion with cleanliness.

  • @upup209

Don't know that Eve Arden was Crawford's "best friend", but another great friend, Myrna Loy dismissed Christina's accusations and stated that she was essentially a spoiled, petulant brat with an axe to grind, and that after working with her on a film set, she wanted to "throttle" Christina herself for her extraordinarily unprofessional and unacceptable behavior. Myrna Loy was one of the classiest women to ever grace the silver screen, and she had great integrity.

  • Mommy Dearest!

  • Joan was pure class and gave all of her life energies to her craft. She invented the concept of "re-inventing" oneself and employed this idea to the very hilt - a 50-plus year career was the end result. A good many of Joan's friendships began with her receiving a simple fan letter - most of the stars of the day kept a certain distance from the public. Joan never did, as she knew exactly where her popularity and success came from.

  • Joan Crawford was a lying, back-stabbing, drunk, and two-faced bitch!!! She saw herself to be better than Bette Davis. Joan also said she coulpd play a hooker better than Jean Harlow...what does that mean, Joan's a whore!!! Etc, Etc, Etc,....!!!!

  • @1967mansfield

Joan never saw herself to be "better" than Bette Davis. She actually admired Davis as an actress and reached out to her when she left MGM and signed with Warner Bros. in the early 40's. Davis's decline at Warner's coincided with Crawford's rise. Bette dismissed Joan however and considered herself to be the superior actress (which, in truth she was) and disdained Joan as the great "star". Some say Davis's dislike for Joan actually started in the 30's, over a man no less.

  • Who is Suzy Knickerbocker?

  • @MPL029 A gossip columnist of the era.

  • It's fun to see the playful side of Miss Crawford.

  • notice how she hates to admit she was part of MGM.

  • I agree Joan was a classy Lady and a fine actress. No one knows the true story behind Joan except Joan. Unfortunately her daughter has sullied her Mother's reputation badly and Joan will always be associated with Mommie Dearest inspite of all the great films she made years ago. RIP Joan.

  • One word to describe Joan Crawford: MAJESTIC.

She always carried herself with charisma and grace. And she dressed beautifully with class.

  • @cheeriosinabowl I totally agree, she is pure class and looked better and better as she aged.

  • Bennett seemed to know everyone personally. He did have a lot of power in those days.

  • People need to stop hating on joan crawford. No one really knows what happened so many years ago. People shouldnt judge her based on some damn book written by a spoiled hollywood brat who has no respect for her mother. What happened in her personal life is her business, remember joan for her beauty and presence in her films. She devoted her life and work to her fans. Most actresses today do it for themselves and not their fans.

  • Joan does look like a million bucks here. Joans dress is the classiest looking piece I've seen in a long time. It's stunning.

  • Joan does look like a million bucks here.

  • Ha ha! Franchot Tone was her 2nd husband.

  • Best part: "Are you a boy?" Joan stands up XD!!!

  • DANG back in the day they had every body on this show

  • NO.....WIRE.....HANGERS!!!!!

  • I love how all the mystery guests were actual big celebrities each time, like Joan. If the show were done today, you would only find washed up "Dancing with the Stars" champions and B celebrities.... The Golden Age will forever be the best.

  • I loveeeeee when she stood up to "check" that she was a female lol

  • Wow, she is the very definition of glamor.

  • @OldHollywoodMovies I was talking about one of the panelist: Suzy Knickerbocker

  • Comment removed

  • love her

  • Actually she'll be 90 on June 21,2011...

  • I love how they are all all dressed up etc :))

  • she appeared on WML several times and never could fit her whole name on that board...the "d" at the end usually got dropped off...lol

  • Detached from reality? Joan made many comedies and musicals in her earlier days... and even up to Torch Song in the fifties! Although known mostly for dramatic roles (which she did so well) that's not her only genre. Sticking with the "yes" and "no" format, she had to say "no"... maybe out of her great humility.

  • Isn't Suzy Knickerbocker still around in NYC but under another name?

  • @dtw1958 Her real name is Aileen Mehle and she's 86. I'm not sure if she's still doing the "Suzy" column.

  • @roots66 Thanks, thats right her son Roger was a guest once. She was too much with that slow affected

'country club drawl' - gotta love it. Wonder whatever happened to Sue Oakland? Can you tell I love this show, ha ha?

  • Joan Crawford was one of the best actresses in Hollywood next to Bette Davis.

  • I'll bet that gown didn't go on a wire coat hanger when she removed it!

  • Bette Davis FTW!

  • 2:03 Love her expression!! I watched this a long time ago and I just got to watch it again. What a classy lady!

  • simply divine

  • Joan indeed did appear on Broadway, starting out as a chorus girl who was quickly spotted for her unusual features and expressive dancing. But Joan's greatest talent may be in making friends. She was a natural at networking all her life. In Hollywood she knew literally everyone and invited literally everyone to her home--not just stars, but technical people, designers, musicians. She knew the names of everyone in the families of those she worked with, such as the lighting guys.

  • @waynebrasler A truly beautiful and talented lady.

  • It's wonderful to see Joan genuinely laughing at 5:26. She always seems to have a ball on WML, really getting into the spirit with some wonderful accents and false voices.

  • I wonder what Joan was referring to when she answered affirmatively to Suzy's query about the legitimate stage; she never appeared on Broadway.

  • She is one classy movie star.

  • who paid the whistler for this OLD glamour puss?

  • she does NOT seem tipsy here at all...one of her better 'live' performances indeed.

  • I love Joan's films so much! Joan Rocks!

  • She's beautiful! Her and Lucille Ball both! "Stars" today-if you can even call them that...aren't like this at all!

  • @sillbill94 - Lucy and Joan borrowed styles from each other all the time. Look at both of them, say around 1954, 1955 - hair, clothes, make-up...

  • @Alvin4NY Not really...Why would they copy each other if they didn't particularly get along..That's stupid....

  • @Alvin4NY

    but Lucy made Joan cry!

  • @Alvin4NY Joan and Lucille may have worn similar styles based on the times, but it would be a VERY far stretch to say that either borrowed specifically from the other.

  • Joan Crawford won this WML, Mr Cerf always tried to be the "winner of all WML games!!" Besides that I think this woman is wonderful and so gracious, there are NO women like her nowadays,

  • Does anyone know the date of this apparence?

  • i love joan so much!

only she would be asked if she was a man and get up to prove that she isn't!

there will never be anyone like her again, as long as movies go on!

  • I don´t know why there are people who speaks badly about this great woman named Joan Crawford. This owes to that in spite of being an international star she was always nice, simple and funny. There are many people who says to me that they had the honor of asking for an autograph and that she was always agreeable with them

  • Joan Crawford is amazing here! Very mysterious woman but that makes her Joan Crawford.

  • She make the film "Strait Jacket" around this time....How funny...

  • @will633 i LOVED that film, campy though it was.

  • She thinks she's a comedian and a musical star over a straight actress? What a fantasist.

  • @djbethell LOL Right on!

  • @djbethell Agreed! But why not to say yes, if she did some comedies and sung... :-) Anyway, she is charming!

  • @Etheline - She's got nearly 100 films under her belt, and covered every genre.

  • @djbethell ~ exactly, somewhat detached from reality? kind of fits the 'mommie dearest' profile i'm afraid.

  • My Woman Joan Crawford!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Joan Crawford fucin "rules"

  • @whato1986 That would be Wilt Chamberlain appearing on I've Got A Secret.

  • @torchkit thanks, my ignorance knows no bounds

  • @whato1986 some random giant named "Wilt Chamberlain"
