it's not surprising that it doesn't work with the at games handheld as that does not have any megadrive\genesis hardware in it, it only uses emulation.
these everdrive carts are extremely expensive! Ok what they do is really cool but I can't find any reason for paying 120$ to what they do! 50$ should be more than enough.
@CrAzY3AGL3 em i find that kind of difficult in the year 2012. its not THAT technnologically advanceed. haha. ok its not a mass production cart but still 120 $ is simply ridiculous.
The Everdrive won't work with clone systems because they use emulation to run the games. The Everdrive was created for original and original style hardware. It needs the hardware to run. Clone systems don't have this hardware.
What's the name of the site where I can convert smd to bin? Please let me know ASAP! I plan on getting the Everdrivevfor Xmas and I got a bunch of roms!
Something I always wonder about playing rom games, is if you can get the exact same experience every time. Like if I play a sms gun game with a genesis gun, will it work?
@SANxJONERO For the most part rom gameplay is the same as playing on the original system. I can't really tell a difference between most games at all. The only difference is the controller really. I use a wireless PS2 style controller for all my games. It's a great styled controller for most everything except for maybe Wii and a little strange for N64 games, but really good for everything else.
Lightgun games though are hit and miss depending on the type of lightgun you own, many are the same.
@TheEverythingMan62 That would actually require a modified CD-rom, because the Sega Mega CD games are on a different medium. The Mega Drive, 32x and Master System are all on cartridges, thus can be converted to ROMS, but Sega CD would need ISOs, so therefore, you need a CD to run them. Remember how he said you need 32X to run the 32x games? It would be the same principle for Sega Mega CD. You need the hardware to run them, and the right medium too. It would also need to be huge in memory.
From what iv hered the mega CD had no copy protection on it so you could just burn games and play them without the need for any external tools or mods
@OhNoNotMyPenis You mean a regular CD player? Because you still need an emulation program or equivalent hardware to run them. If you put them in a CD player, only the music will come out of the CDs. Is this what you meant? I wasn't talking about being region free, it was about needing tools to play the CDs as games, not as regular CDs.
No i ment the Sega CD/Mega CD hardware had no protection on it so there is no need for a device to play ISO's on it, just burn them to a cd and they work, well most of the games did.
I mainly rip most of my Nes collection because i have had 5 Nes systems and none of them currently work except my original which i refuse to go digging in the back of the garage to find so its emulation for some old school satisfaction!
Well the main good thing about it is that it can support hacked games such as Sonic 1 Megamix and others, but even though I do not own a Genesis and I may never get it,it is nice to have them all in one cart, atleast I wouldn't have to change games!
I sent you a PM about a Matrix-like tech demo I made with the program BasiEgaXorz (a BASIC compiler for megadrive ROM images); which I want to see a video review (and shoutout to me) of soon.
@MrScrompy I wasn't disputing whether it was emulation on the cart. I was referring to the comparison of having a rom vs a cart. A lot of people would download roms they don't own and play them. I trial games on rom and then buy the cart. I was talking about the politics of the whole rom vs cart debate.
I agree that playing ROMs, even on on the original hardware like with the Powerpak or this Everdrive doesn't affect the joy of finding a game you love in the wild. If anything it makes me less likely to buy a loose cart and makes me look for complete boxed games. But through playing these ROMs I often discover a game I missed and really love that I end up buying later. Don't have an Everdrive yet but I really want to get one!
i like the fact that this is avalible to us becouse it lets us play roms of hacked games and foreign games, you can trow them all in there but as a collector you also have the choice to get the ones you realy want and like, therefore i think this is a great product good review, ill consider getting one once i pile up the cash lol
@caseygtr not lost. my friend plays games that his dad used to play. in fact, people who like to play by themselves usually play old school games because todays games are focused more on online multiplayer.
About 10 years ago there was actually a floppy disk drive for the SFC/SNES that did essentially the same thing. I nearly bought one but it was $250, and unless it has some crazy collector value now, I am glad I didn't!
I can't seem to find this actual product on Stone Age Gamer's site John. Has it already been discontinued? I'd love to pick this up. I sure would make finding all the rare Genesis games much easier. LOL. Any ideas?
Wow!! This thing is the shit!! I think may be getting one of these when I get my tax return. It's between one of these and a bluray player. But I don't need the bluray player until the fall because that's when all six Star Wars movies are supposed to come out on bluray. So I could maybe splurge on this and just save up for the bluray player over the summer...BTW, the guy who said Plug N Play's are better than this can go eat his head.
the best part about owning the original game is to say that you own the original game! you can hold it in your hands and see that it is real! here it is! in my hands! you only live once, copys suck ass!!!
It's good but nothing feels better than having the actual game in your hand owning the original cart and tracking down great games to me that is the best and for the price of this I can get some real good Sega games
personally i like roms cause im starting to collect retro games and consoles but i want to get games that ill have fun with first so roms let me test games out
there are soo many things like this haha like the r4 for the ds witch is like almost the exact same thing the only thing is i was wondering if this was illegal unless u have every game in the sega genisis library
Gamester you forgot to check the laseractive w/ md/genesis pac will the everdrive work with that? I have a similar product but the "ED" looks more functional.
I would also like to know if a game genie can be used with it. Or if it has a built in code entry system. Yeah, I know, cheater cheater pumpkin eater.
A very cool gadget but one I will stay away from because I'd be afraid it might deter me from buying genesis carts once I owned it. I prefer to actually have the cart in hand, knowing I'm playing a physical piece of history instead of some meaningless, dumped rom.
I'm kinda surprised you don't have the Genesis Duke Nukem game with all the rare stuff you track down. I was fortunate to get a copy from Brazil with one of my trades years ago. =)
Dude I think you can just change the extension on the SMD games to BIN by renaming them and it should work. A lot of PC emulators won't work unless you rename them but that's all you usually have to do, so I think it should be the same on this.
@Gamester81 Your file sizes appear to show that they are BIN format anyway (filename itself means nothing). So, as numberninteynine says, just rename them. BIN files will be 256KB, 512KB, 1024KB, 2048KB etc. SMD files are the same plus 1K, so 257KB, 513KB, 1025KB 2049KB etc, to account for the file header.
Question: Since I always have my 32X attached, can I pop in the EverDrive in the 32X and play both Genesis and 32X games (since the 32x is backwards compatible)?
You need to put the memory card in a PC so you can erase all of the . files, they only show up because you copied them from a mac. I have the same problem with my GP2X.
Dont support roms, for the same reason I dont like digital download... it just doesnt compare to finding and enjoying the phisical game copy... just my opinion
@OutRunner1989 Hey good question. First off you need the 32X attachment to play 32X games using this cart, and second the 32X isn't compatible with the model 3 unfortunately.
Ah nothing beats the original system, no messing around with emulators with problems, no using the keyboard, just the system the game and a controller.
YOU obviously missed the point. This is to play on the real hardware nothing beats the real hardware. better sound and video for you illegal gaming pleasures.
To everyone complaining about the piracy issues, these kinds of devices are good for a lot more than getting games for free. There are tons of hacks, unreleased games and translation projects that you wouldn't be able to play on real hardware otherwise. Like it or not, these things are essential if you're a real enthusiast.
i love all the old school games ive still got my megadrive and this looks like a good buy ive even got a sega mastersystem 2 converter for it ahhh good times
NICE! Been looking for something like that for SG cause I got my older bros system from 90-91 but played all/most of Gen games from blockbuster and traded old ones in i.e. sonics and space harriers, golden axe etc but I also prefer owning orig carts not that I am older and can buy orig carts cheap now but Roms are a great way to try em out before you drop 10-20 buck on a 15-20 year old game. :) Good stuff man! LOVE THE PODCAST BTW WHALE SOUND!!!! YAY
Well, I guess your stance against emulators is more about playing the real hardware than it is about copy infringement (or didja obtain the ROM images legally?),
@SamuraiClinton The ROMs I have are from my own game cartridges that I ripped to my computer myself using the Retrode device which I reviewed awhile ago. The EverDrive to me is more for the convenience of having them all in one easy to get to cart.
love your vids gamester they are excellent, roms are just a convieniece i think, to have the real hardware is what counts i love my megadrive and roms dont come into it apart from kaillara (the online play thing which is cool)
Wasn't Krikzz selling these for $65 last month? I don't see the price posted anymore though.
I agree that the SMS in some cases had better graphics than the NES, but the sound was was pretty horrible in most games. They really should have made the FM synth add-on board a permanent fixture in other countries.
I was lucky enough to own both and liked to compare games on both. I really loved Shinobi, Alex Kidd, Double Dragon, Rampage, Casino Games, etc.
Wow, I didn't know Duke Nuke'em was ported to the Genesis. Looks pretty damn good considering the tech specs. Looks almost as good as Doom SNES without any extra chips.
OMG I am so sold! I am just wondering if it will work with a pal Mega Drive, and if not would there be any conflict with using a NTSC to pal converter?
sega dit said,cd is the optical media of the future ,with the 32x they turned back to cartrides, now sega has a good excuse for it,cuzz the everdrive brings justice not only has it hicher storage capacity then cd,s but also don,t load forever like the sega cd dit.
Wow, cool video! I see emulation as a way of trying out a new game before I buy it, kind of like renting the game :) Emulators have actually made me buy more old-school games. Oh and btw, the last episode of your podcast allgengamers was awesome! I think it just keeps on getting better and better!
That Genesis Super Mario Bros music is awesome!

@numberninteynine Hey cool I'll give this a shot. Thanks for the advice.
Gamester81 1 year ago
@Gamester81 Your file sizes appear to show that they are BIN format anyway (filename itself means nothing). So, as numberninteynine says, just rename them. BIN files will be 256KB, 512KB, 1024KB, 2048KB etc. SMD files are the same plus 1K, so 257KB, 513KB, 1025KB 2049KB etc, to account for the file header.

Great video as always John!
Question: Since I always have my 32X attached, can I pop in the EverDrive in the 32X and play both Genesis and 32X games (since the 32x is backwards compatible)?
snowcon3 1 year ago
@snowcon3 Yes you can. =)
Gamester81 1 year ago
You need to put the memory card in a PC so you can erase all of the . files, they only show up because you copied them from a mac. I have the same problem with my GP2X.

Dont support roms, for the same reason I dont like digital download... it just doesnt compare to finding and enjoying the phisical game copy... just my opinion
But a great video nonetheless Gamester

i have a question about this thing. i own a Genesis Model 3,now...if I put 32x roms on the ever drive, will they work on my model 3?
OutRunner1989 1 year ago
@OutRunner1989 Hey good question. First off you need the 32X attachment to play 32X games using this cart, and second the 32X isn't compatible with the model 3 unfortunately.
Gamester81 1 year ago
@Gamester81 can you use the everdrive on the model 3
OutRunner1989 1 year ago
@OutRunner1989 Yes with the latest firmware it can now work on the Genesis 3.

@Gamester81 Hey will you also be purchasing and reviewing the SNES everdrive
Eyekon313 1 year ago
Ah nothing beats the original system, no messing around with emulators with problems, no using the keyboard, just the system the game and a controller.

I've got all this on my PSP.., why would I wanna pay the 100+ for this gadget...FAIL.
BoldNewTradition 1 year ago
@BoldNewTradition
YOU obviously missed the point. This is to play on the real hardware nothing beats the real hardware. better sound and video for you illegal gaming pleasures.
TowfiqTheBrown 1 year ago
@TowfiqTheBrown Your so wrong. With emulators you can make the graphics better then the original hardware and save your game anytime.
RetroGamer3 1 year ago
@RetroGamer3
Ok so not better graphics and sound but it feels more original. It's hard to explain.
TowfiqTheBrown 1 year ago
@BoldNewTradition Great point. Never pay for roms or emulators.
RetroGamer3 1 year ago
@BoldNewTradition People who say "FAIL" need to be taken behind a house and beaten with a hose.
snowcon3 1 year ago
@BoldNewTradition I think you answered your own question. FAIL.

To everyone complaining about the piracy issues, these kinds of devices are good for a lot more than getting games for free. There are tons of hacks, unreleased games and translation projects that you wouldn't be able to play on real hardware otherwise. Like it or not, these things are essential if you're a real enthusiast.

YAY

How about SG-1000 games?
johnfinne 1 year ago
@johnfinne The Genesis doesn't have backwards-compatibility with it's video chip, so, no.
Dant2142 1 year ago
Well, I guess your stance against emulators is more about playing the real hardware than it is about copy infringement (or didja obtain the ROM images legally?),
SamuraiClinton 1 year ago
@SamuraiClinton The ROMs I have are from my own game cartridges that I ripped to my computer myself using the Retrode device which I reviewed awhile ago. The EverDrive to me is more for the convenience of having them all in one easy to get to cart.
Gamester81 1 year ago
@Gamester81
But Surely you play some homebrew roms. No?
TowfiqTheBrown 1 year ago
love your vids gamester they are excellent, roms are just a convieniece i think, to have the real hardware is what counts i love my megadrive and roms dont come into it apart from kaillara (the online play thing which is cool)

I usually turned the sound down low! :P

The Sega Master System was way better than the NES! And it's true in Europe was quite popular (I was a Sega Boy).

do you know if this will work on a EU megadrive ?
and would the NA games play on it

Wow, I didn't know Duke Nuke'em was ported to the Genesis. Looks pretty damn good considering the tech specs. Looks almost as good as Doom SNES without any extra chips.

OMG I am so sold! I am just wondering if it will work with a pal Mega Drive, and if not would there be any conflict with using a NTSC to pal converter?
nexus000111 1 year ago
sega dit said,cd is the optical media of the future ,with the 32x they turned back to cartrides, now sega has a good excuse for it,cuzz the everdrive brings justice not only has it hicher storage capacity then cd,s but also don,t load forever like the sega cd dit.

Wow, cool video! I see emulation as a way of trying out a new game before I buy it, kind of like renting the game :) Emulators have actually made me buy more old-school games. Oh and btw, the last episode of your podcast allgengamers was awesome! I think it just keeps on getting better and better!
